    NOOO!

    Not approved by the UIAA.

  2. kunkmiester says:

Did something like that for my dog. People who made the seat belt harness didn’t consider the millions of cars that have a loop through buckle like that when they decided to have you put the belt through a loop on the harness. They also didn’t put a swivel on it either.

Just make sure it’s rated well above the load–you experience more than one “G” during a crash, and a carabiner rated for 200lbs won’t hold the 600lbs you might end up as.

In Soviet Californistan, we get abducted by the paramilitary for not having a dog properly restrained in a motor vehicle!

  3. Jesse Meyer says:

Heh, and those carabiners say “not for climbing”! Didn’t say anything about no seatbelt repair.

  4. LordOftheLols says:

“Childrens Healthcare of Atlanta” – Whats written on the belt..

  5. alanevil says:

No no no no no! As a climber that uses carabiners not to die I can immediately see how this would fail at very very low force levels. The belt would spread the force across the entire width of the buckle TWICE (there would have been a post in the slots) and then into the two sides and thus the latch. This set-up puts all the force on a single small area of buckle’s end and I bet in an accident it would pop that like a piece of tin foil.

Not to mention that “carabiner” is actually one of those keychain ones that (maybe) is labeled “Not For Climbing”.

      • Freq says:

Yeah, I can’t believe that novelty give-away would be rated for more than a 50lb or 60lb load, even when used in the ideal circumstance. In an accident, you could easily top that. As a random guess, 160lbs of person, going from 55mph to 0mph in 1 second gets us…. 401.2lbs force according to wolfram alpha. Even split among the other anchor points, there’s plenty left to snap that thing.

  6. Outback Jon says:

I’m curious what they had to do to break the seatbelt in the first place. Those things are pretty strong.
