True story: upon playing my first computer FPS, I thought that the default WASD movement keys were a mistake so I switched changed them to the arrows. Turns out, I’m an idiot.

It’s ESDF you should be using anyways. Natural place for having your hand when writing so why not use same place for gaming also?
Because it’s quite a bit less comfortable hitting the tab, shift, ctrl keys? (I can’t actually HIT the ctrl key w/o either moving at least one finger off ESDF of twisting my hand around)
CTRL is the only one that becomes awkward, and in return you gain easy access to the TGB keys. Just rebind CTRL to Z and you’re good to go.
Not to mention the little stuff on the F that makes it easy to find without looking at it.
Back in the times of Doom & the like, arrow keys were the default for movement. Heck, I stll use arrow keys for movement in games (I use the mouse with my left hand). This usually takes just a few moments to set up.
Yeah, ditto. Left-handed mouser and arrow-key mover. I also remap any hotkeys that are supposed to be the number row onto the number pad on the right.
true story: back in the days of DOOM, i (and i’m sure thousands of others) independently (re)invented wasd because it just worked better than the default arrows. when Quake (i think it was) came out i was all set to re-map the key bindings to wasd again, only to find that was the default by then already.
wasd is used because its easier to hit ctrl and space. esdf is usually used for mmo players to allow more keybindings
It’s not easier to hit space from WASD than ESDF. It’s also not necessary to hit CTRL for anything (crouch should be C).
The additional available key bindings of ESDF is useful for any game that requires more than aiming and shooting, and it would be superior to WASD for hand placement alone without the other benefits.
You’ve never played games that use ctrl modifiers?
