A Shockingly Good Fix

white trash repairs - A Shockingly Good Fix

From the submitter: I bought this microwave oven for R$ 20 to fix it and use. Unfortunately, it is IMPOSSIBLE to find the keyboard membrane in Brazil. In USA, just the membrane costs $80!!! So I traced the keyboard circuit and made a new keyboard for it :)

    Submitter, you are awesome!

  2. This is worthy of Mad Science Mondays.

  3. Moxie Man says:

My brother did something similar once, except he pulled the control panel off a different microwave and soldiered it over the top (like this) on the first microwave.

  4. Sihaya says:

    You win.

  5. Outro Fulano says:

    BTW, R$20,00 = US$12,61

  6. Gamma_214 says:

Good job OP. You WIN with this one.

  7. Deft Punk says:

Now *this* demonstrates the true kludger spirit! Good submission, and well done OP!

I’m sorry, guys, I don’t understand :( Can someone explain?

This one is very simple. The submitter bought a microwave with a bad keypad. Instead of paying out the rear for a factory replacement he simply made his own. This kludge is a win and not a fail.

Nice Job. Someone else who considers “No User Serviceable Parts Inside” a challenge.

Now, your final task. Draw a keyboard, Laminate it (so it stays clean), then tape it over the new buttons. Leave a clear window for the display.

  12. Bruce, this is a true possibility. I’m planning in doing that with that kind of contacts used in the original atari joystick, is a small dome of metal that “clicks” when you press. But this day I was crazy for a Lasagna and I wanted it badly :) It was a raining sunday and there was nothing better to do at that moment. So…”why not?” :o D

I’ll update that as soon as I have some free time. I believe it will become a nice tutorial about rolling your own panels, take a look at my site from time to time, maybe you’ll see something interesting soon :D

This is fantastic, you win 2 internets.
Puts my evening break to shame, The right mouse button stopped working 1/2hr latter fixed – the button had failed so desoldered the back button (has stupid function buttons) and swapped, all fixed and no more stupid function buttons :) .
That site however is awesome, us spoilt westerns could learn something

  14. Blue says:

Just saw this over at HackADay. They referred me to this site over a year ago. Sometimes they post some of the same kuldges I see here but with more details.

  15. Lucassiglo21 says:

a friend of mine had this same issue, he adapted a keyboard from a credit card terminal. that´s still working.

  16. Just Sayin' says:

Good work. I’d consider a perf board with momentary switches an actual fix though. Not easy to clean, but other than that…

  17. Jeff P says:

Thinking of these hackjobs, I need to take a picture of what I did to replace the save battery in a couple GBC games recently…

    My dad would be proud!

  19. In time: Now i know who buys that dodgy stuff the sell for R$1,99 at mercadolivre.

The challenge: What can you do with a broken LCD chinese HiPhone ?

  20. Marcos says:

    EURI quando li “Tabajara”

Microondas queimado? SEUS PROBLEMAS ACABARAM! =D

  21. brmbug says:

Huh. Must be a common problem with that model. My Grandmother had one that used to like to turn itself on whenever the hell it felt like it. Luckily it started doing it just before she moved into assisted living, so we didn’t have to replace it. Had I been in your shoes, I would’ve made the keyboard out of a couple of dozen mini switches and a rats nest of wire.
