Welcome to the last Historical Thursday of the year! This week’s post comes out of my yet-to-be-attained dream of becoming a cartographer during the 16th Century. In 1929, a German philologist (another dream profession of mine) was searching through the annals of a palace library in Istanbul. Chance led him to discover one of the most interesting maps of all time. Printed on a gazelle skin, the Piri Reis World Map is more detailed than any map from that era, and possibly contains the first known acknowledgement of Antarctica.
