For this week’s Historical Thursday, we’re going to head a little back in time and a more than a little to the East. The Hakka people of southern China were originally a nomadic tribe who gradually migrated from the provinces of the north over hundreds of years. After Mongol invasions and power struggles between Dynasties, the majority of Hakka had settled in the Guangdong and Fujian provinces. Once there, they discovered their neighbors weren’t the friendliest bunch and were forced to endure persecution and war for hundreds of years. To aid in their defense, they constructed entire villages within giant fort-like homes.
