  1. pyrax says:

    A rare genious kludge, that.

  2. Swedefreak says:

Having been in the home improvement business, I give this a huge thumbs-up. Anything one can do to minimize the mess of working with sheetrock is a big plus. I used to have a plastic ice cream container lid with a small hole in the center that I used as a shield/dustcatcher when drilling into ceilings. People laughed but I never got plaster dust in my eyes or on the floor.

  3. Artavur says:

    This is actually very useful

  4. oldlegodad says:

Actually…this is damn smart common sense thinking. I will use it next time I don’t want to have to clean up the FLOOR

  5. Gavin says:

    That’s actually brilliant.

  7. Gator says:

    If Einstein did home projects….

  8. Frax says:

Ha! I saw that and though “hmmm, I wonder if there’s anything I need to drill?”

    Then I read the caption…

  9. PJ says:

Good idea. I’ve used a small paper cup (think shotglass-sized) in a fashion similar to Swedefreak when drilling into a ceiling, and the cup method works to a lesser extent on walls, too. But this is much more effective.

clap clap clap clap clap clap clap… BRAVISSIMO!!! Standing Ovation!

  11. Steamr says:

Post-it WIN! :D Ingenious! – Have to give that a try myself. ;)

  12. Vito2 says:

And remember that Post-Its now have a “super sticky” variety, to make sure the thing stays put till you want it to come off.

  13. waldo says:

This was in Hints from Heloise nearly 25 years ago. Some ideas never go away.

  14. Colocation says:

    Beats balancing the hoover. Genius!

    • poopy says:

What does life hacker have to say about incinuating other people stupid for not knowing what you didn’t know three months ago?

  15. robert ot says:

no shopvac was around. this seems petty ,unless you were drilling just few holes, then yeah, other than that use a broom or a vacuum.

  16. Shar says:

Brilliant! Keeps all of the sheetrock dust from getting stuck behind the molding!!

  17. says:

Genius. Simple, effective solution that would probably never occur to most.

  18. G says:

    That’s beautiful, man.

  19. Vikavid says:

Hmmmmm, I do have this wall lamp that my wife keeps telling me to put up…….

  20. Paul Tarantino says:

Or do the same thing with a strip of masking tape, folded to make a partial loop below the hole. The dust will adhere.

  21. gloworm says:

I usually tape 1 side of a sandwich bag underneath

  22. Sargasm says:

We Do this all the time when installing art. I thought this idea was out there already?

  23. Zach says:

I’ve always used a piece of wide painter’s tape folded in half. When you’re done drilling, you roll it up so it sticks to itself, fold the ends, and all the dust is sealed inside before you even pull it off the wall.

  24. dave says:

why not use a vacuum cleaner and hld it under the drill bit?

  25. Don Simpson says:

A couple of small reverse folds at the ends of the main fold make it more pocket-like and keep the dust in better.

  26. Ratchet Thunderstud says:

    This is absolutely genius!

  27. Ford says:

That’s actually really clever! God bless you, butterandguns!

  28. antiderivative says:

I wonder if this guy is going to snort the drywall when he’s finished, its already packaged to make a nice line!!!!! LOL!!!!

  29. Jan says:

I once saw same kludge, but using a coffee filter paper taped below drill, so the dust could fall into the filter “bag” and could not blow off.

  30. That’s pretty smart, but it is unlikely the surface of the post-it is large enough to be able to contain all the waste.
