Caution, you will now be looking for things to drill just to try this out. ~Not-So-Handy Andy

A rare genious kludge, that.
Totally. i’ll have to remember this one.
Me too, that’s a good one really.
I will remember this one too.
…sure beats hauling out the vacuum cleaner!
Having been in the home improvement business, I give this a huge thumbs-up. Anything one can do to minimize the mess of working with sheetrock is a big plus. I used to have a plastic ice cream container lid with a small hole in the center that I used as a shield/dustcatcher when drilling into ceilings. People laughed but I never got plaster dust in my eyes or on the floor.
I watched a guy installing new central air at my inlaws use an old basket ball cut in half to catch all the debri when drilling holes in the ceiling.
This is actually a great idea. I’ll have to remember it as well.
Walikng in the presence of giants here. Cool thinking all around!
This is actually very useful
Actually…this is damn smart common sense thinking. I will use it next time I don’t want to have to clean up the FLOOR
Yeah that’s a total WIN….hadn’t thought of that one…
That’s actually brilliant.
G.
Agreed! The genius who did this has inspired me to new heights!
Bonus feature: If you don’t watch how hard you’re drilling, it will automatically signal when the area reaches Fahrenheit 451.
If Einstein did home projects….
Ha! I saw that and though “hmmm, I wonder if there’s anything I need to drill?”
Then I read the caption…
Good idea. I’ve used a small paper cup (think shotglass-sized) in a fashion similar to Swedefreak when drilling into a ceiling, and the cup method works to a lesser extent on walls, too. But this is much more effective.
clap clap clap clap clap clap clap… BRAVISSIMO!!! Standing Ovation!
Clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap
Post-it WIN!
Ingenious! – Have to give that a try myself.
And remember that Post-Its now have a “super sticky” variety, to make sure the thing stays put till you want it to come off.
This was in Hints from Heloise nearly 25 years ago. Some ideas never go away.
Some good ideas never go away, but how do we stop the bad ones from coming back all the time?
Beats balancing the hoover. Genius!
This was on Lifehacker almost two months ago: http://lifehacker.com/5620573/use-a-post+it-note-for-easy-post+drilling-cleanup
What does life hacker have to say about incinuating other people stupid for not knowing what you didn’t know three months ago?
no shopvac was around. this seems petty ,unless you were drilling just few holes, then yeah, other than that use a broom or a vacuum.
Brilliant! Keeps all of the sheetrock dust from getting stuck behind the molding!!
Genius. Simple, effective solution that would probably never occur to most.
That’s beautiful, man.
Hmmmmm, I do have this wall lamp that my wife keeps telling me to put up…….
Or do the same thing with a strip of masking tape, folded to make a partial loop below the hole. The dust will adhere.
I usually tape 1 side of a sandwich bag underneath
We Do this all the time when installing art. I thought this idea was out there already?
I’ve always used a piece of wide painter’s tape folded in half. When you’re done drilling, you roll it up so it sticks to itself, fold the ends, and all the dust is sealed inside before you even pull it off the wall.
improvement WIN, must show to father…
why not use a vacuum cleaner and hld it under the drill bit?
Lack of enough arms.
A couple of small reverse folds at the ends of the main fold make it more pocket-like and keep the dust in better.
Wow…. a even more advanced kludge.
Oh teach us master, for we are not worthy.
This is absolutely genius!
Brilliant!
That’s actually really clever! God bless you, butterandguns!
IMHO you’ve got the right asnwre!
I wonder if this guy is going to snort the drywall when he’s finished, its already packaged to make a nice line!!!!! LOL!!!!
I once saw same kludge, but using a coffee filter paper taped below drill, so the dust could fall into the filter “bag” and could not blow off.
Men!
That’s pretty smart, but it is unlikely the surface of the post-it is large enough to be able to contain all the waste.
