Kludges have really been on a roll lately.
that is called cribbage, it is actually quite common
Really? This isn’t a fail. Those aren’t palettes – it’s called cribbing. This is how engineers temporarily support all kinds of things while they’re working on them – bridges, houses, etc.
Jenga!!!
(Those are railroad ties or square cribbing timbers {same basic thing without the creosote} not pallets.)
This is actually how you support heavy objects on uneven ground or for temporary work. Those are not pallets, they are large, dense, support logs that are much stronger. These blocks are used as in the photo to support heavy loads such as hydraulic lifting rams, stabilize cranes on uneven slopes, ect…
…and possibly trains…
It looks like the guys in the background are hiding behind a berm and watching, just waiting for it to fail.
I have never been so scared by a kludge before! So wrong!
(though thanks Bruce for alleviating some of my fears)
Am I the only one the noticed the misspelling? The word is pallet. A palette is what an artist puts his paint on, also a range of decorating colors, as a fall palette.
every artist works with their own palette
pfffffff (I’m blowing)
As long as it’s in compression, wood has no problem holding up a train. This temporary support is just as strong as the permanent wooden trestles that trains use all the time.
Those wooden things are pallets. Pallette is what an artist uses for their paint.
The world Jenga championships got off to a rousing start today as Uruguay beat Venezuela with a score of 3 nil.
Do they have tiny vuvuzelas there?
The “it’s cribbing!” folks are spot on. This is temporary work, probably because the steel girder bridge is structurally deficient and is awaiting repair or replacement.
Grandpa Patel had spent his life on the Indian railroad driving trains. It’s so nice of his colleagues to honor his dedication by setting up such a nice funeral pyre for him.
an un-pallet-able repair.
Don’t do a pallet swap. Not only will it not look right, but the train will be delayed.
It’s not holding the bridge up, it’s holding the ground down.
People, how many times must we tell you not to play “Giant Sized” Jenga with a bridge and a bunch of large pieces of wood!?
I guess this means the road is closed – and please ignore that 35mph sign.
Bridge is three and a half meters high…
Thanks ….. and as long as we’re clarifying things, those are not dock pallets, but railroad ties, carefully stacked.
They aren’t railroad ties either. They are what countless people have already said. Hardwood cribbing. No creosote. Probably 4×6 or larger.
No, the road is usable… Just no bicyclists higher than 3,5m are allowed!
you take a bridge from the bottom and you put it on top…
I bet they forgot to put the bulldozer on the correct side of the bridge. It’s going to be interesting to see how they sqeeze that past this setup.
Boy, is that truck driver going to be mad when he finds out that his load of pallets got stuck under that bridge.
So people LARP Jenga now?
Sure, it’s 3.5 metres high – but only half of a car width wide.
you’ve waited all summer for the pre-quel that shook the nation,
from the makers of I-35W, we give you…
