Oh, come on, this is one of the most common car kludges ever. I thought most people used a thicker can, but I suppose as long as it covers the rust hole in your exhaust.
At least the can offered a period of cool refreshment. So some good was done.
Guilty, only coke cans are to thin you gotta find a old fashioned metal coffee can then you might have enough left over for some good ol’ body work.
it looks like the kludger doubled up on the can for additional thickness, but i agree a coffee can would last longer
I was just about to go there. I prefer to use a soup can though. It’s dimensions are almost perfect if you cut both ends of the can.
Lol. Never would of thought of that
I remember doing this years ago. After about 5 cans in various places, I had to replace the exhaust system…
How CAN this be safe?
There is no safety issue. Only noise abatement.
I prefer asbestos and duct tape!
I could swear I’ve seen this kludge before..
I’ve seen it before, too. Under my car.
Yep. Silastic + Coke can + hose clamp = cheap and safe fix for a muffler hole that would otherwise slowly grow. And it will probably outlast the chassis.
Yup! Maxwell House coffee cans are better, though, especially the mid-80′s variety when they still built them to last…
We did that too years ago and it works.
Having this Coke is guaranteed to put a smile on that face.
I’ve seen this on semi trucks except instead of a pop can, it’s a coffee can.
I did a huge road trip two years ago with a 1985 Camry. In Myrtle Beach, SC at 3 AM, my tailpipe rusted through and was dragging. Where I pulled over, there was a can of Monster lying in the gutter, so I kludged the pipe back together with that, and got proper parts (pipe and clamps) at an auto store the next day
That held for less than 100 miles. Next gas station, I bought three cans of Monster and rad clamps, and nested them on. I got to Texas with that kludge, where I found a (what else?) Coors Light tall can. That got me home to Alberta, and lasted two months after that!
Coors got the Monster so drunk, he couldn’t fall off.
Even driving goes better with Coke.
Experiment on alternative fuel
Day #21
We are ready to begin the first tests. Now, all we have to do is to add the Menthos.
been there, done that… only I used proper exaust clamps.
Exhaustive proof that those sugary, acidic sodas cause cavities. (What, you thought that was rust?)
This CAN go POP!
HEADLINE FAIL
this looks familiar…except on my car, it was an inside-out beer can. And the repair was done by “professionals” at a car dealership’s repair shop.
Rather than doing a proper repair/weld on the tailpipe, the mechanic slapped on an inverted bud can and some hose clamps and called it good and told me I was good to go on my 2000+ mile road trip. Only found out about the kludge the morning of my departure, when the tailpipe was making an awful sound – I had to go to get an emergency repair before we hit the road. Good times, good times…I actually still have the can & clamps as a momento of the road trip!
Shasn’t?
Yes, yes, it does…
Come on, I’ve done similar things several times when waiting for spare parts. BUT… I’ve always used beer cans.
Edd Gould would be proud
Way back in the 70s, my friends and I worked at a gas station where the service bays were closed at night. We ended up crawling underneath a Chevy Blazer to do this after a kid had gone romping around in his daddy’s Blazer in the snow. He was worried his father would kill him after he bent the tail pipe. We hacksawed the bent part, straightened it in a vise, and used an oilcan that we ground in half. He was pleased with the results, but we never saw him again. Hmmmm
