very creative use of zip ties. WIN!

  2. Frills says:

Sad fact: I noticed that the netbook* in this image is the same one I have, BEFORE I noticed the kludge.

  3. Anonymous says:

That’s actually quite brilliant. Maybe I should try that on a few of my own cables with “broken” plugs.

  12. JB says:

Duct tape, caulking, and zip ties can fix anything!

    • blah says:

      ^ not true. after I got done w/ my last ex…wow…NOTHING could’ve fixed that…

    • Sarge says:

Coming from a PC hardware technician, I have to say that that is a WIN of a repair-kludge.

Of course, I’d always replace a broken ethernet cable head with a new one, but in a pinch this will work. I’ll have to remember this.

      Thanks Cheesburger network!

    • Jesster says:

you didn’t use enough zip ties then

  13. Neo says:

Wow. I make software for DSL modems, often times various cables have broken tabs on the plugs, I could totally use this!

    Tech-recycling ftw!

  14. user 6437378 says:

Well, there’s fixing things that are broken, often with decent results, then there’s wasting time and effort. Either get a new patch cable, or stick a new plug on, not that it matters too much as the plug will work fine without the tab. If it’s critical it stays in, then you probably shouldn;t be sticking bits of old cable tie on it.

    • Sarcastoid says:

How can replacing the “plug” be faster?

    • nadromac says:

Yeah… because going to the store to pick up more CAT5 or a “plug” is going to be so much faster than the proven cable tie trick. Just about every network cable in my house has been fixed in this way on at least one end.

    • Mark says:

user 6437378, you’re an idiot. The point of a “kludge” is to fix a problem with the materials available on hand. Do you not understand the whole point of this website?

Of course replace the connector would be the proper way to fix it but the fact that you feel the need to point that out is not particularly impressive or noteworthy.

  15. WereMuppet says:

Not to be confused with WinZip ™…

  16. Danielle says:

This is the only time I have been INSPIRED by a kludge!

  17. Neomusashi says:

I think my colleague has a similar issue, but he seems to have fixed it in another way.

  18. Mr. Bill says:

Seriously?? For the cost of the Super Glue and the Zip Tie you could have bought a new cable.

  19. Meh_Man says:

It seems to be bottlenecking the connection.

  20. Archangel says:

I guess someone took out a restraining order against that cable.

  21. ebondefender says:

Win! I need to try that on my ethernet cable. It was the last thing I ever bought from Circuit City before they went out of business…and the tip broke lol

  22. sierrawave says:

Brilliant! I came into work just this past Monday morning only to find that my ethernet cable had been broken while my computers were being juggled around the Friday before. I cannibalized one from a nearby unused phone, but I need my nice long cord. I am sooooooo going to try this as soon I as get home and find some zip ties. I just hate calling IT for small crap like this.

  23. Mer Lin says:

I think the really strange part of a kludge kicks in, when you actually think about it – to consider it as a “solution” for yourself.

  24. Mr Dreigon says:

Why bother fixing it? they stay in fine without the clip, so long as your not moving your computer around a lot, and if you are you probably should be using wireless.

    • elcidoVI says:

for at least 4 years i dealt with dropped connections due to a broken modem cable plug falling out. i finally just used cloth tape and manufactured a wedge of sorts. this is better though, and necessary.
