  1. LLahsram says:

That is awesome! I’d love to hear the symbol-base in the background too.

  2. Bashnagdul says:

I wish I could make another brilliant comment here, but I’m quite simply flabbergasted in the epic-ness of this epic kludge

  3. SCAScot says:

Someone needs to contact this man and have him record “Kludging Dirty”.

  4. This man is named Diego Stocco, and he’s a professional sound designer and composer who has scored for film and video games. He has a large stable of homemade instruments like this one, and he’s made videos for all of them. He even made one where he played various parts of a tree as musical instruments and made a song out of it. Great stuff.

  5. Church says:

My god I just found what I want to make this summer!

  6. Ace5762 says:

I took a note, a saw tooth wave right, from this pantomime 4, put it back here, regenned it through itself, looped it back, mixed it with the sound of this crab commiting suicide- then, I let it stew in its own reverb for about three hours right, and then I pump it all out through this shoue to give it that oaky timbre.

  7. dono1 says:

Does anyone know where I can get the karaoke version of that song?

  8. keshet says:

    More cowbell!

  9. CallMeDizzy says:

Am I the only one who thinks the main melody sounds a bit like the guitar riff from Depeche Mode’s (the original version, not any of the crappy covers) Personal Jesus?

  10. Schneider says:

sounds like Depeche Mode’s Personal Jesus.

  11. Azrael says:

This was my face when I was watching: :D

This is possibly the most awesome thing I have ever seen.

  12. Grantski says:

Every time this guy plays, Justin Bieber cries knowing he will never have that kind of talent.

  13. Andy Fry says:

    completely brilliant!

  14. ipsidicsitismic says:

dude, I’m so glad to hear he does video game music because the first thing that came to mind was some village from a Final Fantasy game!

  15. krypto092108 says:

    Totally kewl Kludge! FTW!

  16. Cora Rose says:

This guy rules, but he totally ripped off Personal Jesus.

  17. When I was 6 my parents wanted to turn me a god damn Mozzart so they made me take piano lessons. It didn’t worked cause I wanted to like Jim Morrison so I took guitar lessons. That didn’t worked either. This instrument is a combination of two things I suck balls at.

    • tehposter says:

most of jim morrison’s music was based on classical guitar. in other words, you’d have been better off learning music theory and classical music on the piano, then learning to play guitar, then learning to shift what you know about piano to guitar.

  18. WeirdOregonian says:

    Speaking as a band geek

    Epic WIN!!!

  19. Luke says:

I don’t understand how this can work, fret spacing on stringed instruments to give western note scales is calculated using ‘the rule of 18′ (although 18 isn’t quite correct). Given the equal spacing on this contraption there would only be a couple of keys which gave notes in a musical scale. Pianos can have equal spacing only because the have strings for each note (like a harp).

    • HGJ D says:

According to his website: “The neck is slightly tilted so when I press a key I can push all four strings at the same time. but because the piano keys are not perpendicular to the frets the tuning is imprecise (which I like) and can also generate in between semitones. How strong I push the keys also affects the tuning.”
So my guess is the guitar neck is unfretted.

    • tehposter says:

the piano keys don’t make the noise by striking the strings. this is basically a fancy way of playing the guitar regularly. the strikers hold down on a note, and he strums with his other hand.

      • Sarcastoid says:

and that’s what Luke was saying. if he’s using a fret-less bass neck then most of the notes he’s “holding”would be off. If he’s using a neck with frets than each adjoining 3 keys (approx.) would give the same note(which they don’t seem to be doing).

        • Sarge says:

That’s because he’s not using the traditional western scale. It’s a completely different scale. Each key on that keyboard corresponds to a different note, but not the notes they would on an ordinary keyboard.

Basically, to play this keyboard you start by taking everything you know about how to play a keyboard and throwing that out the window.

  20. imantodes says:

    So… basically it’s a hurdy-gurdy, without the wheel.

    • imantodes says:

Or a nyckelharpa, for that matter. In any case, the idea of keyed string instruments is very cool but quite old.

  21. Steve Austin says:

hmm, not quite. He uses a sampler (or sequencer? Is that what it’s called?) to record and play back several partitions at once. The homemade instruments are kludged, but not the performance.

    • mamarosa says:

      Precisely.
He is not generating all the sounds at once. He is playing back to his own trax. But how did he create the MIDI input for his kludge device?

      • WASA3I says:

        There’s no MIDI there.
He’s playing all the parts of the song on top of each other, and using his laptop as a multi-track device, like for instance when you go to a recording studio and you play drums first, then guitars, bass, except he’s doing it from the same instrument.

  22. Mike Gervasi says:

This sounds a bit like Iron And Wine. Very Very cool.

  23. Neomusashi says:

That is kind of big for a macbook pro accessorie.

  24. Name says:

    Nice!
I thought something was missing so *Applause*

    AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME

  32. DaClyde says:

    It’s like Animusic….only live action!

  33. faerieblood says:

But is it a kludge if its not some weird fix or immitation thing? this is more of an epic instrument.

  34. Dr. Dot says:

I care not one bit for the logistics or statistically based chances of actually pulling this off. But I want to have this man’s baby. I *MUST* have this man’s baby. Anyone who can come up with this type of instrumentation is either seriously deranged or an absolute genius!

(And we all know that the difference between genius and insanity is the wealth and prestige of one’s patron).

  35. How I envy this man his talent!

  36. blah says:

    THIS IS MADNESS!

No, wait, it is actually pretty awesome. KEYBOARD GUITAR WTF.

  37. XD4nt3X says:

  39. 1wolffan says:

    Ladies and Gentlemen…
The new wave of music is now.

    Also…
Sweet instrument there. It’s like a one-man-band (seated version).

  40. kthx says:

Epic win. Somebody introduce him to Tom Waits. Immediately.

  41. Thanatopsis says:

Reminds me of That 1 Guy and his magic pipe. Look him up if you haven’t heard of him.

  42. Archimedes says:

Although I respect this creation and the music he created I find it very reminiscent of a John Vanderslice song called Pale Horse. Take a look at the link. I wish I could find a version where he plays it with his band. It much clearer when he has his bass player but I think any music theory fans should be able to spot the reverse chord progression. Most important, listen for his bass line. He hammers it out in this acoustic version faintly.

Now, please don’t flame me here. I’m not saying this was intentional or the similarity in any way detracts from his accomplishment. Just thought it was very interesting and you guys might have fun listening to see if you hear the similarity as well.

  43. Steve says:

    I like it!!! I want a GuiViloBoard!!

  44. Lydia says:

Go find a copy of Nickel Creek’s “I Should Have Known Better” and listen to it. This is quite similar!!

  45. Jeremy says:

    Pianotar anyone?

  46. futboi91 says:

Anyone else think this could well be the next Pirates of the Carribean theme song?

  47. Lizz says:

Deffinatly a frankenstine combonation of every instrament a 14 year old kid wishs they could play at the same time

  48. Chainslaw says:

    This man is a genius.

  49. Lou-Lou says:

So that’s how Depeche Mode got their sound

  50. Lottie says:

    Awesome :)
Only the violin bits made my ears bleed.

  51. Tedward says:

ugh, his bow was way too tight.
