That is awesome! I’d love to hear the symbol-base in the background too.
I bet there are some strange cymbals around the bass of it, too.
Touché
I wish I could make another brilliant comment here, but I’m quite simply flabbergasted in the epic-ness of this epic kludge
Someone needs to contact this man and have him record “Kludging Dirty”.
This man is named Diego Stocco, and he’s a professional sound designer and composer who has scored for film and video games. He has a large stable of homemade instruments like this one, and he’s made videos for all of them. He even made one where he played various parts of a tree as musical instruments and made a song out of it. Great stuff.
FREEBIRD!
My god I just found what I want to make this summer!
you mean break
And summer started on June 21 so you’re wasting valuable time here
what if they’re from south of the Equator?
I took a note, a saw tooth wave right, from this pantomime 4, put it back here, regenned it through itself, looped it back, mixed it with the sound of this crab commiting suicide- then, I let it stew in its own reverb for about three hours right, and then I pump it all out through this shoue to give it that oaky timbre.
Does anyone know where I can get the karaoke version of that song?
Same place I got the karaoke version of Classical Gas.
More cowbell!
Am I the only one who thinks the main melody sounds a bit like the guitar riff from Depeche Mode’s (the original version, not any of the crappy covers) Personal Jesus?
You’re spot on.
damm, yes!
sounds like Depeche Mode’s Personal Jesus.
Agreed… Personal Jesus
This was my face when I was watching:
This is possibly the most awesome thing I have ever seen.
Every time this guy plays, Justin Bieber cries knowing he will never have that kind of talent.
He does that all the time… havn’t you heard some of his songs? Either he’s crying or trying to attract a wild Sea Cow.
Nah, Justin Bieber is just always crying.
completely brilliant!
dude, I’m so glad to hear he does video game music because the first thing that came to mind was some village from a Final Fantasy game!
Totally kewl Kludge! FTW!
This guy rules, but he totally ripped off Personal Jesus.
When I was 6 my parents wanted to turn me a god damn Mozzart so they made me take piano lessons. It didn’t worked cause I wanted to like Jim Morrison so I took guitar lessons. That didn’t worked either. This instrument is a combination of two things I suck balls at.
most of jim morrison’s music was based on classical guitar. in other words, you’d have been better off learning music theory and classical music on the piano, then learning to play guitar, then learning to shift what you know about piano to guitar.
ROFL! BUT I SUCK AT BOTH!!!
Speaking as a band geek
Epic WIN!!!
I don’t understand how this can work, fret spacing on stringed instruments to give western note scales is calculated using ‘the rule of 18′ (although 18 isn’t quite correct). Given the equal spacing on this contraption there would only be a couple of keys which gave notes in a musical scale. Pianos can have equal spacing only because the have strings for each note (like a harp).
According to his website: “The neck is slightly tilted so when I press a key I can push all four strings at the same time. but because the piano keys are not perpendicular to the frets the tuning is imprecise (which I like) and can also generate in between semitones. How strong I push the keys also affects the tuning.”
So my guess is the guitar neck is unfretted.
the piano keys don’t make the noise by striking the strings. this is basically a fancy way of playing the guitar regularly. the strikers hold down on a note, and he strums with his other hand.
and that’s what Luke was saying. if he’s using a fret-less bass neck then most of the notes he’s “holding”would be off. If he’s using a neck with frets than each adjoining 3 keys (approx.) would give the same note(which they don’t seem to be doing).
That’s because he’s not using the traditional western scale. It’s a completely different scale. Each key on that keyboard corresponds to a different note, but not the notes they would on an ordinary keyboard.
Basically, to play this keyboard you start by taking everything you know about how to play a keyboard and throwing that out the window.
I think I’d rather take the Bassoforte and throw that out the window.
So… basically it’s a hurdy-gurdy, without the wheel.
Or a nyckelharpa, for that matter. In any case, the idea of keyed string instruments is very cool but quite old.
hmm, not quite. He uses a sampler (or sequencer? Is that what it’s called?) to record and play back several partitions at once. The homemade instruments are kludged, but not the performance.
Precisely.
He is not generating all the sounds at once. He is playing back to his own trax. But how did he create the MIDI input for his kludge device?
There’s no MIDI there.
He’s playing all the parts of the song on top of each other, and using his laptop as a multi-track device, like for instance when you go to a recording studio and you play drums first, then guitars, bass, except he’s doing it from the same instrument.
This sounds a bit like Iron And Wine. Very Very cool.
WIN! So Im not the only guy who has heard of that group! Shepherds dog FTW!
That is kind of big for a macbook pro accessorie.
Nice!
I thought something was missing so *Applause*
Sweet. I just downloaded the ring tone.
Tell me how did you do it? Could you pass instructions to the ignorant me?
Don’t bother. By the time the song is over, the callers have already hung up.
Just add Johnny Cash’s voice and this would sell millions.
nordic keyed fiddle upside down!!!
HAAAAAAAAAX *throws CRT monitor*
:O dude u amaze mee all my frends will know your knolage of muzic
Would have been fine with everything save the violin bow scratches. Didn’t care for that…otherwise it was awesome!
AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME
It’s like Animusic….only live action!
But is it a kludge if its not some weird fix or immitation thing? this is more of an epic instrument.
I care not one bit for the logistics or statistically based chances of actually pulling this off. But I want to have this man’s baby. I *MUST* have this man’s baby. Anyone who can come up with this type of instrumentation is either seriously deranged or an absolute genius!
(And we all know that the difference between genius and insanity is the wealth and prestige of one’s patron).
How I envy this man his talent!
THIS IS MADNESS!
No, wait, it is actually pretty awesome. KEYBOARD GUITAR WTF.
I dont know hwy but the beggining sound like left 4 dead 2 when u end a chapter
I am in love.
Ladies and Gentlemen…
The new wave of music is now.
Also…
Sweet instrument there. It’s like a one-man-band (seated version).
Epic win. Somebody introduce him to Tom Waits. Immediately.
No panic, Tom waits.
Reminds me of That 1 Guy and his magic pipe. Look him up if you haven’t heard of him.
Although I respect this creation and the music he created I find it very reminiscent of a John Vanderslice song called Pale Horse. Take a look at the link. I wish I could find a version where he plays it with his band. It much clearer when he has his bass player but I think any music theory fans should be able to spot the reverse chord progression. Most important, listen for his bass line. He hammers it out in this acoustic version faintly.

Now, please don’t flame me here. I’m not saying this was intentional or the similarity in any way detracts from his accomplishment. Just thought it was very interesting and you guys might have fun listening to see if you hear the similarity as well.
I like it!!! I want a GuiViloBoard!!
Go find a copy of Nickel Creek’s “I Should Have Known Better” and listen to it. This is quite similar!!
Pianotar anyone?
Anyone else think this could well be the next Pirates of the Carribean theme song?
Deffinatly a frankenstine combonation of every instrament a 14 year old kid wishs they could play at the same time
This man is a genius.
So that’s how Depeche Mode got their sound
Awesome
Only the violin bits made my ears bleed.
ugh, his bow was way too tight.
