Bring out another five rolls, Bill! – Ms. Fix-It

Favorite Comment: Fixer Dogmeat says, “This seemed like as good a time as any for Derek to try out his automatic duct tape wrapping invention. Everything was working perfectly until the old lady’s curious cat from next door got a little too close to the machine. Next modification: safety protocols.”

  1. Anders says:

If You can`t repair it with duct tape, then it`s broken!

  2. J says:

    Isn’t that just insulation?

  3. D says:

Ah, a graduate of the Red Green school of repair. Remember, spare the duct tape, spoil the job.

  4. justme says:

This is no kludge. It’s insulation to keep the water from freezing…

    • Loren Pechtel says:

Exactly. There’s no doubt some insulation under that duct tape. It’s a normal precaution for those of us in areas with some nighttime freezing.

      • yolanda says:

it’s not even duct tape, folks, notice it’s much shinier, it’s specifically made for this. There’s fiberglass under it, and then the mylar heat reflective tape on top. It is, in fact, about keeping the pipes warm in winter. We like to laugh at the stupid kludges on here, but sometimes our own stupidity is what gets demonstrated!

The Mummy was let go from yet another job. this time for using up all the duct tape on a single pipe.

  7. Wogblumpy says:

Its just holding pipe insulation in place. Ive done close to the same thing but a hell of a lot neater job. Really just looks like the person who had to deal with frozen lines got pissed and went to town with the duct tape. Theres also Heat Tape in there that goes to that outlet on the side of that box. With a water line out in the open like that its going to freeze a lot with out this abomination of pipe insulation, heat tape and duct tape.

  8. Jim Honaker says:

There are no lines under the tape. The duct tape is the line and holding the valves in place.

  9. Sambo says:

Wow. That is a Multisonics cabinet. I wonder what’s in there? Could it be an 820 controller? Probably not… Maybe a 911 or a 901? Could it be a 101 or even an old FR series? OMG!!!

  10. Czernobog says:

    Bill & Tape’s excellent adventure.

  11. Jompe71 says:

Hey, it’s Muppet Show Gonzo… mummified!

  12. surrealfarm says:

I see wires coming out from under the pseudo-duct tape. That means that there’s thermostatically controlled heat tape underneath, then a little insulation, and finally covered with this silver tape. It sure beats having the pipes freeze and burst in the winter.

  13. Zoião says:

What is this? A tape elephant?

  14. Ahetma Vaakenjaab says:

It looks to be a Febco 1.5″ or 2″ RPZ backflow preventer on a lawn sprinkler system covered with, as most everyone has noted, heat tape to keep it from freezing. A few dollars worth of heat tape can prevent you from having to buy a new RPZ at close to $500 (last time I priced one). I’ve owned a lawn sprinkler company for several years, and this isn’t unusual in areas prone to early fall or late spring freezes. Texas could have learned from this wrap-up job this winter. In the Dallas/Fort Worth area alone there were over 200,000 backflow preventers destroyed by the freeze. Most were 1″ models, but still, at roughly $125 a pop, that represents more than a few rolls of heat tape!

    • Anna Rexia says:

It doesn’t get that cold often enough for people to be reminded of things people further north are more accustomed to. Austin was all but completely closed down for a few days due to cold and ice. At least it was quiet for a change, other than the one day it snowed a little over an inch and everyone went bonkers.

  15. Grantski says:

And here we see a perfectly preserved Dog-reliever! Before all humans lost compassion and understanding in 2043, they would leave these out for dogs to “enjoy” However, most were torn down after a while, since the smell got too bad to tolerate after a few years. This is a very rare find indeed……

  16. Water man says:

Eh guys, being I do that kind of stuff for a living. That is there for the sole perpous to wrap the insulation to keep it from freezing in the winter. Not so much as rigging it together there at all but to protect the insulation which protects the piping.

  17. Wayne says:

That is two Gate Valves and a one way Check Valve wrapped in insulation tape to keep it from freezing. The reason for the Gate Valves is so they can shut of the flow if the Check Valve needs repair. SOP

  18. Thadius says:

I will not be satisfied with these duct-tape kludges until someone makes an entire HOUSE out of the stuff. It’s good for everything else, apparently, now it’s time to take the next step!

  19. Bartsmom says:

It’s found at the artist Christo’s house!
