» 51 Kludgers Kludging

  1. BeatNick says:

I might be way out of line here, but couldn’t they have just… oh.. I dunno… maybe removed the product from the box and put it right on the shelf? I know I’d feel less shafted.

  2. Sir Fix-a-lot says:

Back-to-school sale the other way around… They should have used duct tape. Beginner kludger’s mistake; you just can’t buy experience.

  3. JRPRJ says:

Sorry, but I think this is a picture for failblog… not There i fixed it

    • kc/cc says:

I don’t think you sound sorry enough. I think you need to plead for mercy or something. Also, you really should issue an apology AFTER making a rude remark. And sending flowers might be a nice touch, too.

  4. Alexis says:

Can you not see that they have put the (much higher) actual prices on the shelf below the boxes? That’s why they crossed out the ones on the boxes, oh smart one.

  5. Vilhelm says:

This is funny, but I feel obliged to chime in here:

I used to be a manager at Walgreens. I’m not with them anymore, and I don’t owe them anything, but they’re a fine company. I have never ever seen anything stupid like this at a store. 99% of the time, we use the price printed on the box, since we probably worked that price out with the manufacturer anyway. The other 1%, our price is lower because of a sale or whatever.

My best guess at what happened here is that stuff got moved around on the shelf by shoppers (it is a constant fight in retail to keep shelves organized), and then someone went at the boxes with a sharpie and took a funny picture.

  6. yosh says:

So… A kid scribbled through some prices written on a display and it’s a kludge?

    • Bruce says:

No, when the manufacturer ships the item in a pre-priced shelf pack like those, there is normally more than enough profit in the price for the usual retailer.

This one is either selling very old stock (doubtful…) or is in a very high expense location like an Airport Terminal shop (nope, normal shopping center…) or located in the middle of nowhere where shipping costs a lot extra (outskirts of Dallas, so no…) or is just plain exceptionally greedy.

Don’t just cross it out when you raise the price… Go get another shelf box.

      • Maya says:

Or at least slap another one of the printed shelf labels over it.. sheesh.

      • Hates Photoshop says:

This is just stupid and greedy. I just moved from The Colony, TX in January. I lived there for 3 years. I’ve been there and seen the greed and stupidity for myself.

      • Sir Fix-a-lot says:

Bruce, sometimes also, the pre-priced pack shows a price tag that’s actually LOWER than cost. Therefore, the item is what they call a LOST LEADER. Its purpose is to bait you inside the store. Once your ass is in there for the discount item, they make profit with anything else they sell you at full retail price (sometimes with a 20%+ markup).

    • CplUsmc says:

Check the prices on the strip below the products. They’re offering 99 cent glue for $2.19, $3.99 markers for $5.49, and $2.99 markers for $3.79. Oops!

      • yosh says:

I DID see the prices below them. Walgreens may not be the least expensive place to buy things, but they aren’t stupid enough to leave the prices on the displays like that. That why I said what I said in my comment.
Check Vilhelm’s post above mine. I call shenanigans on this one.

  7. wilhalen says:

Wow, that’s something I’d expect at Target… they’re amazing at retarded prices. Maybe Walgreens got jeliz.

  8. Timerider says:

    Everything’s bigger in Texas.

  9. Alleycat says:

Now at Walgreen’s!!! Low low APR financing on ALL Back-To-School supplies!!! All credit applications accepted!!! No reasonable offer will be refused!!! Everything MUST go!!! We’ll even pay off your trade no matter how much you owe!!! Come into Walgreen’s NOW!!!!

  10. Thadius says:

…No 2.99 tube of white-out around to fix it? Just use our 4.99 markers!

  11. Dogmeat says:

They are marking up exaggerating their prices to turn a bigger profit make the items seem more exciting and, subsequently, dissuade anyone from buying anything increase their sales. It’s an incredibly stupid insightful idea. I’ll do the same thing with my day…

I was lying on my couch flipping channels on the television base jumping at the Cave of Swallows in San Luis Potosi, Mexico. I yawned and fell asleep for two hours threw my chute and came within inches of the cave wall! It was the most boring thrilling day I ever had! Aren’t you glad you’re not me envious of my life?

    • Anna Rexia says:

      Priceless!

      • kc/cc says:

Hmm. Most things are, I guess, when people pocket them and walk out.

I believe this is a case of marking up prices so that when these items are seen in the store ad at MSRP, customers will think they’ve really got a bargain. Thanks, Walgreens!

  12. Sam says:

I worked at Walgreens for a few years. I hated back to school.

    • vickie says:

I worked at K-Mart for a year in college, 22 years ago, before scanners, when everything was price marked with a sticker, except it never was.I hated Christmas, Back-To-School, Thanksgiving, Halloween, and pretty much every day of my life spent there.

      • kc/cc says:

Christmas returns, Valentine’s Day, Easter… I used to hate working in such a place, too, and I mostly remember how these big stores are just full of crazy people. I once saw two little old ladies get in a fist fight over the last bag of Halloween miniature Reece’s Peanut Butter Cups.

  13. Ummm.... says:

Isn’t it illegal to mark up the manufacturers prices?

  14. Ashley says:

    that is soooo jacked up

  15. Andria says:

It continually amazes me that people still shop at Walgreens. There MIGHT be a FEW decent prices, but everything else is so outrageous.

I worked there for 6 months and it was amazing to see the kind of overpriced junk people would buy.

  16. TheAntiCat says:

That does it; I’m walking over to my local Walgreen’s and kicking the managers ass. I know it’s not his fault but it will make me feel better.

  17. TexasDan says:

    Obamacare anaolgy of the day.

    • BushLoverDan says:

Actually, it is an example of the need for Obamacare and government regulation. Luckily, in this case I can take my business elsewhere. When my kid breaks her arm I can only go to the designated provider to get ripped off. $1200 for a doc to look at an x-ray for 2 minutes and tell me it is broken. $200 for x-ray, x-ray tech, temporary splint, and a cast tech to make it.

  18. Pookie says:

A fine example of the juxtaposition of inflation and laziness.

  19. SavageParrot says:

Personally I wouldn’t buy the pens. But only because of their crappy performance in removing the price on the display stand…

  20. klutzo says:

    Recommended Rip-off Price

  21. Todd says:

Most y’all that comment here don’t understand jack about “Pricing” in a retail store. Anything that is printed on the actual package is the Manufacturers SUGGESTED Retail Price. Notice I said Suggested, not MANDATED or REQUIRED.

Next time you buy a bag of Doritos or Fritos, check what’s printed on the bag itself and compare that with the price you actually pay.

    • Rollyn01 says:

The MSRP should be considered the maximum price. You you place the product on sale, that’s one thing. If, however, you was to “jack up” the price, the manufactuers would not support that price. It is not the price that they have calculated in during the production of the product. If it was returned to the manufactuer, they will not refund the higher price, only the price that they have already stated.

As for taxes, they are not responsible for those additions to the price as it doesn’t go to neither them nor anyone involve in the selling of the product( i.e. distributors, retailers, shippers, etc.) Recouping from a loss in sale via discounts or stolen products is possible, but not from taxes.

  22. Lo says:

As a walgreens employee…. that looks about right. :/ God, put a sign OVER the price. OVER it.

  23. Diruhk says:

well at least they prove that the pencils are working lol

  24. Jysander says:

Huh.. If I knew which Walgreens in the Colony this was I’d forward a copy of the photo to the Texas State Attorney General’s office. It’s illegal in Texas for a retailer to mark up prices like that. A retailer has to sell the goods at the lowest price listed ON THE PACKAGE.. thus, the prices on the display boxes are valid.
Greed is an awful thing. Too bad the banks didn’t learn that.. we’d not be in this economic mess if they had. What next, a Walgreens bailout?

  25. cookers says:

It seems the staff would prefer to spend time attempting to cover the low price than simply removing the products from the boxed and putting them straight on the shelves.

  26. iBooger says:

“Won’t people notice the prices are different?” Inquired Stacey.

“Exelent question”, said Jon. “I’ll use the pen from the bottom shelf to mark out the prices.”

“It’s brilliant”, replied Stacey, “noone would ever suspect it was us if we used the product to alter the product!”

  27. cyberphonic says:

Those shippers the BTS merch come in are advertised at the seasonal sale price. This photo was taken probably a couple months after BTS and what you are seeing is Walgreens regular retail price for the stuff they sell year ’round.

They failed horribly by not junking the shippers and packing up the merch to sell next year, or as needed.

  28. John Martin says:

So what if Wal-mart is knocking down prices. We’re Knocking them up! er… wait a sec.
