Fixing A Cable Bind

Epic Kludge Photo -Fixing A Cable Bind

Submitted via Submit a Kludge!

Binder clips are so useful. Binding paper, sorting cables, keeping the chips in my desk fresh, makeshift barrette for the girl…the list goes on. – Ms. Fix-It

Thanks to all the Fixers that pointed out that this kludge originated over at Lifehacker.

  1. Cricketz says:

    GHETTO!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. MacGyver says:

Now all I need is a computer with all of these ports on the same side…

    • Karma says:

My mac has all these ports on the same side… That’s a mac power cable.

      • starling says:

My Thinkpad has all those ports at the same side too.

But the great thing is that you can put those clips ANYWHEREZ!!!!eleventy!!!1!!1

      • !vo says:

Yes it’s a Mac, but they are ordered backwards :)

        • Steve Jobs says:

I did not approve of this configuration. Please dismantle it immediately and purchase the Apple-appoved version for only $29.99 or I will sue you for infringement on the patent I bought up.

        • reorder says:

I thought ethernet went somewhere between USB and power…

          • !vo says:

You are right. So no fixing after all.

            • McSmartypants says:

If you look closely (if you can, after your “other” internet-related activities.. after all, you can go blind doing that…) you’ll see that this isn’t a cheapo port replicator, it’s just a way of keeping the cables from falling off the desk when disconnected. So.. grab the cable, plug it in.

              Fixed.

  3. Gino says:

    Genious!

  4. Karma says:

Forget a kludge, this is really smart *highfive*

  5. msyendor says:

OK, how’d you get past security photo my desk? At least you missed the Goody hair clips securing the coiled network cables to their wireframe shelves

    • chelle says:

hahaha awesome! i use claw hairclips for all the cords behind my desk and around my house, been doing that for about the last ten years. i also use them to hold back curtains, close snack/chip bags, pipe down the windchimes when it’s too windy… cheesy 50 cent hairclips are so damn handy, who’da thought

  6. Rob says:

That is an excellent idea! I’m gonna use that one myself!

    • Mcgyvr says:

      Me too. This is awesome.

      • Bumpersticker says:

        Ditto!

      • Anna Rexia says:

I was thinking the same thing. The wires on the back of my case aren’t easy to get to, but I like to take the case out at least every few months and blow the dust out using a compressor. I’ve had the wires zip tied together, but if I ever change anything out, I have to cut the ties and then re-zip them afterwards. With the binder clips, I could use those for one or two cables each, and it would be less likely for cables, much less the whole mass of them, to call behind my desk. Of course, I’ll have to get the coloured binder clips :D

        • Squeaky says:

I think a lot of us were. Absolutely brilliant idea. Wires seem to like to fall off my desk whenever I unplug them.

    • Time Kitten says:

Deffenetl going on my laptop stand, this kludge is.

  7. stanley says:

Wow I think I’m going to head over the patent office and patent this idea. Brilliant!

  8. Jack says:

Actually that’s a really good idea.

  9. drm31415 says:

    OMG: Genius

  10. Thadius says:

    Binding clips: Thwarting Cordthulus everywhere.

  11. Sir Fix-a-lot says:

Binder clips and cables: The meeting of soulmates.

  12. His Petal says:

    Great idea. ^^

  13. Pi-Rat says:

    Bravo!
Those binder clips come in handy. I have one on my lapel mic since its built-in clip is worthless and I used another to secure a curtain tie-back made of yarn, push pin, and clip.

  14. Kwyjor says:

I declare this to be the most brilliant idea since that Wondermark strip about using chopsticks to eat Cheetos.

  15. treborx says:

    elegant in it’s simplicity. WIN!

  16. Mike says:

Hell, I have a couple of those clipped to the edge of the bookcase next to my armchair in the living room to hang the charger wire for my cell phone/bluetooth, my net book power cable and my various thumb-drives on lanyards (and the laser pointer for teasing the cat…) from just so they are easily accessable and don’t get all tangled on the floor. I keep a whole little Rubbermaid tub of on top of the refrigerator for bags… The damn things really ARE multi-purpose!
Someone ought to start a web site devoted to all the uses of Binder clips other than as designed.

    • Meduseld says:

I use them to latch guinea pig cages I make out of wire shelf panels. A pack of organizer cubes, some zip ties and a sheet of linoleum, and you can have a humongous cage for a fraction of the price of a store bought cage.

      • N/A says:

I made the same cage when I had piggies. That was pre-kid so they had their own bedroom complete with a large kiddie pool to run free in on the floor. Most spoiled little piggies ever.

  17. Buster says:

That’s just straight from lifehacker I think. IIRC they ran that stuff just a few days ago. Nothing even remotely kludgy about it. I call fail on this post.

  18. cosmitchny says:

Excellent idea. And I use the bigger version of paper clip to hang my coat. They are as universal as zip ties and Duct-Tape. Love it.

  19. bonarez says:

Totally agree, not a cludge but an example of pure genious!

I know both can be hard to to keep apart, but I’m happy most of you agree on this. Pure Genious!

Can we all agree that binder clips fit in the list with:

    duct-tape
    zip ties
    paperclips (according to McGyver)

  20. Little Girl Blue says:

    “Okay, Jerry?”
    “Yeah?”
“You’re gonna be the point cable. If you hear or see anything suspicious, alert the rest of us by tapping the desk three times with your connector.”
    “Gotcha.”
    “Nick?”
    “Yo!”
“You’re gonna be the first one outta here. When I give you the signal, wiggle with all your might…”

  21. omgwtfbbq says:

I’ve seen this in lifehacker before…

  22. Upbeatjunk says:

Way to steal from Lifehacker. This was posted on there a couple of weeks ago.

  23. Tim says:

    Best. Kludge. Ever.

  24. John Metcalf says:

    I <3 Binder Clips.

  25. molbal says:

it is a great idea!!! :D

  26. Oh, come on!. This is an awesome idea!

  27. Anthrogrrl says:

A binder clip actually once saved my educational career! The elastic in my skirt completely gave out about 5 minutes before I was defending my thesis. But one large binder clip held my skirt in place for 2 hours!

  28. kathy says:

This is just plain brilliant resourcefulness!!

  29. Luke says:

I think i’m actually going to try this…

  30. Bree says:

    Brilliant!!

  31. Mrs. McAngrypants says:

I actually think this is brilliant and may fix something like this up myself!

  32. Denny says:

I think one of the defining qualities of a kludge is that it’s a solution that solves the problem at hand but is clearly not well thought out. This is well thought out and clever, and I wouldn’t call it a kludge.

  33. DS says:

    Win != kludge

  34. b4yp says:

That’s actually… a really good idea. I am totally stealing that.

  35. TexasDan says:

Next: colored binder clips, to match with the correct port.

  36. Brandon says:

    Wow, that is really clever.

  37. Chico Rulez! says:

Class, that’s pure class! Will use this for sure!

  38. NM says:

Now you too can hold bra straps in place with NEW “skin tone” binder clips!

  39. Pookie says:

I am so gonna do this – except my clips are being used to hold up the cardboard shower curtain…

  40. MeMyselfnI says:

Heck, I’ve been using binder clips like this for years! Srsly! For larger cables use an extra large binder clip, but snap a carabiner to both handles and you can run power cords on the back side of your book case. Honest and true…

I don’t even live in a trailer park nor nuthin’ I jest figgered it out on ma own. lol

  41. pepsibookcat says:

This is made of pure win.

  42. elec tech junkie says:

    IDEA THIEF!!!!!!!!!
This is how Einstein got from the paten office clerk to the history books.
My girlfriend thought I was crazy to do this on our bed’s headrest for our cellphones, two tears ago.
All I need now is a time machine

  43. Luciano says:

Cool! Very Cool! Genious! Think Diferent! LOL! hihihi

  44. Theoretical says:

This isn’t remotely a kludge. This is ingenious.

  45. Jompe71 says:

I looked and smiled to myself over this kludge.
    Mac power cable, nice!
    USB, cool!
    Earplug cable… mhmm!

Network cable… NETWORK CABLE.. ARRRGH! The entire kludge is destroyed.
    WI-FI god damit, WI-FI!

    • Dogmeat says:

Next on a very special episode of ‘Enabling Your Cabling’, Ethernet cable combats feelings of worthlessness and being phased out altogether by wireless technology.

    • Fernblatt says:

Now Now Now… I connect to the net here via wi-fi, but *I* have an ethernet cable connecting this machine to my Stack-O-Hard-Drives machine where I keep all my MP3s and videos and stuff. lol

  46. strangerover says:

This kludge originated at my desk. …and then at LifeHacker.

  47. Dhes of Yuggoth says:

BRILLIANT!!!! [Goes forth to put awesome idea into use.]

  48. Bah says:

Use a just little a god-damned bit of god-damned editorial discretion! If I wanted to see clever and useful hacks, I’d subscribe to a stream of clever and useful hacks.

  49. Pez says:

    binder clip = my wallet

  50. melly says:

Everybody sing!!…The USB’s connected to the Ethernet. The Ethernet’s connected to the speaker jack…

  51. Evan says:

    For. The. Win.

    ’nuff said

  52. Wired says:

Ok, I’ve actually done this and I have the clip still on my desk.

  53. Colin says:

Ha, I got one better than that.

  54. Kagemorou says:

At the venerable Ms. Fixit’s request, I present to you the Call of Cordthulhu!

  58. MacMan says:

Well, I hate to say it, BUT!
They are all backwards. He will have a tangle!
I own a macbook and the cables do not go in that order.

  59. dmmcintyre3 says:

I love this. I think I originally saw it on lowendmac.com. It does a good job although I had to find something else to clip it on because my desk was too thick.

  60. Karma2 says:

I am totally going to do this! Perfect for the laptop that commutes between home and work!

  61. Scott says:

Oh this made my day… I’m SO doing this myself… as soon as I find my binder clips…

  62. edgysatire says:

I know this looks ridiculous but this is exactly what I need. Every time in unplug my laptop my cables always fall behind my desk, I now have a solution.

  63. Livvy says:

Okay, now this is just awesome! This doesn’t even seem to fall into the same category as a couple of ladders taped together or a drill powered coffee roaster, this is OCD genius!

  64. ziege says:

    That’s brilliant!

  65. StarDragger says:

Editor–If there’s anyone who could draw a cordthulu, it’d be http://ursulav.deviantart.com/ . She draws some wacky stuff, especially puns like that. And she has already drawn quite a few traditional cthulus.

    • Kagemorou says:

Wow… Definately outclasses me, I love the plague doctor ducks… Oops, off topic! But I agree she could probably do a great rendition of the Kludgeriffic Elder God!

  66. Holly says:

That isn’t a kludge, it’s GENIUS. I’m off to buy some binder clips…

  67. Neo3200 says:

  74. Ellemenopee says:

I’ve been doing this in my car for a while actually. Keeps things from jostling around too much and getting in weird places filled with crap. These things ARE multipurpose.
