  1. Sir Fix-a-lot says:

Look carefully, looks like a spider actually started building its web around it, providing adequate, OSHA-approved insulation. Probably got fried in the process, though.

  2. Sir Fix-a-lot says:

That black wire is pretty close to that metal pipe. As far as I know, black pipe is often use in building for gas. Epic fail.

    • the black is the ground wire, so no proleam

      • Larry says:

Ronald, being that the plug is a US style power connector, the Black wire is usually the hot wire. Connecting that one to earth, usually results in some interesting lightning like displays.

      • Anna Rexia says:

Not for AC wiring it isn’t.

        • electro says:

Yeah, In North America AC the black wire is the “current carrying conductor” white is the “neutral” and green is the “bond” or “earth” not to be confused with the “ground” which is what you do to electrical systems not devices or equipment.

    • Bruce says:

But it can’t be a gas line – The switch cover (the parts you can see) clearly says “Oil Burner (Emerg)ency (Disconnect)”!

Ipso Facto, that’s probably an oil line. Or possibly steam – shouldn’t use black pipe on water.

  3. Quix0r says:

I think they are going to demolish the building, right? No need to call a demolish company. ;)

  4. Just_Some_Guy says:

This is why plugs have holes in them, right ?

    • Shiftkitty says:

Yep, but you’re supposed to wrap them to avoid arcs. When you live in an older home, built before electricity was common in homes, you often have to do this just to get light where you need it (assuming you’re renting and not owning, in which case you just add a few more outlets).

  5. anodean says:

OK, I’ll go out on a limb here (because I was right with sir-fix-a-lot on his comment).

Does that shadow it’s casting look right to you? The plug’o'horror is entirely on the right of the strong vertical line of the pipe.

And while the size of the plug seems right compared to the toggle in the furnace switch, the degree of detail on it seems too great.

    • Leo Lichtman says:

You are right–Photoshop. The plug is casting a shadow that is obviously frim a strobe. Why are there no other shadows?

However, assuming for the sake of argument that this is real, and that the black pipe is a gas line, it would take a hell of an arc to burn through the pipe wall–more likely the wires would burn/melt, breaking the circuit, even if there are no fuses or breakers in the system.

      • Paddy says:

There are no other shadows because the plug is the only thing standing out from the wall far enough to cast a shadow. The pipe and the switch box are touching the wall, and therefore no light can get behind them.

        • Leo Lichtman says:

The shadow of the plug indicates the light source is to the right and above. The toggle switch sould therefore be casting a shadow on the red switch cover. I would also expect the raised lettering on the switch cover to have very thin shadowing in the lefts and bottoms.

          • PsychoDad says:

No, the lettering is actually very shallowly recessed, not raised.

OH I forgot! EVERYTHING here is shopped. right? The whole world is a ‘shop! There is no reality!

            STFU about ‘shops, k?

        • Anna Rexia says:

Please do not feed or tease the trolls.

    • Kenoscope says:

Its right. The degradation of image caused by several resizing s causes these ‘ITSAPOTOSHOPEDMEATBALL’ claims. Each time that you crop, re-size, or add/reduce pixels it induces errors. Called NOISE. With film you get GRAIN. The absolute only certain way to determine if this is real or fake is for the viewer to travel to where this thing is, then look at it. Of course, half would still scream fake, not believing their own eyeballs, until either they electrocuted themselves or were engulfed in the eventual fireball. And about half of them would look at their next destination and say “Wimpy CGI man.”

  6. Torri says:

Unless the place is wired wrong, the black wire (or red and black if wiring for 220V) carries the live current. That it’s resting right beside a rusted iron bar or pipe is what horrifies me.

But that there isn’t any electrical tape, or at least duct tape, makes me wonder about the installer.

And I don’t know the full Caution label, but it looks like it is requesting 3 prong grounded plugs only?

  7. Thadius says:

    Needs more duct tape.

  8. Paddy says:

Hey, sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

  9. Sir Fix-a-lot says:

Shold get another spider to finish the job (read my first comment on top). This time, make sure the breaker is switched off before.

  10. Dogmeat says:

I think how they hooked everything up will be very useful for burning the midnight oil.

  11. Francesami says:

Obviously the person who installed this was thinking safety. Look how the prongs of the plug are bent away from each other to minimize the chance of an arc.

  12. Kana says:

If they’re going to kludge up the cord, why can’t they kludge up the switch? A paperclip would work nicely, or maybe a french FRY.

  13. Glyptodon says:

Older heaters have a kludgy pilot light. This retrofit’s got a sweet electronic ignition..

  14. mindmelda says:

Someone who took “Touch that and you’re dead” a little too literally…

  15. dono1 says:

“Now swing me from side to side and I should be able to reach the emergency shut-off switch! C’mon, you can do it- you may be short but you’re wiry…”

    • Dogmeat says:

It looks like you were up burning the midnight oil yourself when you submitted this comment! But it was definitely worth it. I pictured the scene in my head and caught myself rooting for the wire and plug.

      Nicely done! :-D

  16. MohawkAngel says:

If you stand in front of the switch like in this picture the light is coming from behind you on the left up the wall. The white plug is diagonal so it explain the way the shadow is projected on the wall. That also explain the lack of shadow for red box switch because of its thickness you wont see the shadow on the wall or slitghly see it but shadow on that picture is contrasted on the black pipe.

  17. Lefty says:

…how did everyone miss it…… the combination of our our national colors smeared unartistically on two of the major components which should be.. …RED… WHITE….but no BLEW!!

  18. Archangel says:

At the there’s an auxiliary igniter now for the oil burner.

  19. Archangel says:

For those of you than that manage to turn on your oil burning furnace by accident while sleepwalking, we have something to wake you up.

  20. blytherubbings says:

notice the hot (black) next to the pipe

  21. MrMadChef says:

Sadly, when we had our condo inspected before we bought it, this is how the garage door opener was wired. Offer was amended so that seller had to have it taken care of (as in, actual outlet installed so that opener was plugged in properly) before closing.
