Copy & paste this:

In the US, we have things called building codes which make things as stupid as this illegal.
Seeing as the Caution Tape is in English, I’d guess this is in the US. No worries; the core, other than being bent, must’ve passed a structural examination. The external covering provides no support. All hail Damocles, the Engineer!
Make that, “is awaiting structural examination.” I’d like to see that report.
Jenga Extreme.
You know… Other countries apart from the USA speak English….
Duhh … there is other countries that speaks them some american?
Ah thaink thay maht could be, but ah don’t know rahtly fuh certain…..
The fact that its English doesn’t mean its the US. It could be the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand or any of the many countries with English as the official language (Nigeria, Botswana etc.)
Botswanian building codes are brutally stringent.
Thats exactly the point…
That’s right. Whereas in the UK and Canada it’s a mandatory construction requirement that public buildings must be supported with random bits of wood and old broomsticks. C’mon, stop believing everything they tell you on TV, get out there and see the world. You might be pleasantly surprised.
But as an engineer, Mr. Damocles would know that that column is now buckled. It’s only a fraction of its original strength. (Let’s just say a ballpark 10%.) So I hope that’s some strong caution tape. And, I’d keep moving, rather than taking a picture.
it’s funny-the caution tape says “do not enter”.
how do you enter a column????/???
“In the US, we have things called building codes which make things as stupid as this illegal.”
Yeah, we do, but we also have short memories. Remember the way New Orleans was left hanging a few short years ago? It’s still full of stuff way worse than this, but life must go on. I can also think of several local houses that have technically been condemned, but people still live in them. There are only so many hours in a day, and only so many resources. This would not be a priority situation, I would suppose, in the right area.
How irrelevant. No building codes are going to save a building submerged under 20 feet of water.
My point is, there is a lot of stupid and dangerous crap to be found–no one should assume that everything you see is up to code just because you live in America. There apparently aren’t enough people qualified to guard the place, or things that really need attention would get it in a timely manner.
What if they attached floats to it?
TO THE LAB!
Uh, I took this picture in langhorne Pennsylvania… So there goes that…
Is this the site of the old speedway? If so, then it’s GOT to have bad karma.
I thought that looked familiar. It’s the Langhorne Plaza where Redners is. The Speedway was up the road a bit where Kmart and Aldi now sit.
I knew I recognized it… right in front of the educational store.
No prob, the security guard fixed it.
If anyone has seen the inside of those pillars, they all look like this anyway. The fancy stuff is just to, well…make it fancy. So the caution tape should say, “Caution: This pillar is not fancy.”
Well, except they’re usually plumb, straight and made of steel
“Caution: This pillar is not fancy.”
That cracked me up. Thanks for that.
Likewise the pillar, clearly.
Do not enter? Do not enter WHAT?
The pole. With the front end of your car. Like the guy who bent the pole did.
I wouldn’t enter any part of it, in case the getting out again part gets complicated.
This is the strip mall that the bookstore from the picture below is located
These are decorative columns, not structural. Seems like a perfectly adequate TIFI to me.
And this is the most decorative column of them all.
SHHHHH!!!!!
I’m hunting wabbits.
One might try to blame this on Toyota.
Worst game of Jenga ever.
didnt see the jenga reference until it was too late O.o
To recap: Jenga EXTREME!
Jenga EXTREME: If you win, you get to live! If you lose, um….
Day 160: Set trap for zombies. Note-I may need a bigger box.
You mean like a Wal-Mart or Target?
Day 162: It failed. I’m not even going to go into details. It just… it failed. I think… maybe if… no, just no. It failed.
ya shoulda gotten an Acme Trap-on-A-Box — endorsed by coyotes everywhere!
I think Acme went bust after Wyle Coyote took them to court.
it is absolutely the US- I just passed this in real time earlier today- its in a philly suburb.
“I just passed this in real time earlier today”.
Huh? What kind of time were you in during the rest of the day?
Borrowed.
Wasting and/or killing.
Dream?
I can understand the caution, but the do not enter part confuses me. Which part am I supposed to not enter?
“Caution is not the word…”
Now where did I leave that roll of “Run Away” tape?
Maybe they should have put up that caution tape BEFORE someone decided to drive into the pillar.
That discount store wasn’t kidding when they said, “Take 50% Off Everything”.
I like the way it says “DO NOT ENTER”, bu the store(s) behind it seem to be open…
The dude who took the phot is closer than I want to get.
Caution: This building is run by cheapskate arses. Do not enter the area or your pocket monies will be taken by the insurance companies.
This is the prologue of a kids book entitled “How three little termites destroyed you mom’s shopping mall!”
Тhey would not need the “Do not enter” tape, if they were used duct tape instead! Shame…
This reminds me of a project in school where we built little bridges out of balsa wood and then tested how much weight it could support. The splintered wood went everywhere when they collapsed. I hope the person with the front row seat (taking this picture) above has safety glasses on!
Run away! Run away!
And on your right everyone, we see a new use for those dead Tripods left over from the War of the Worlds….
Yes I believe according to HazCom rules where there is immediate possibility of death or severe injury the appropriate word is “DANGER”.
Well, it says “Caution: Do Not Enter”.
If the rest of the building is maintained like this, then I certainly wouldn’t want to enter THAT building.
I think it’s going to take more than a couple 4×4 and fiberglass to fix that. Don’t you notice the wood? It is starting to splinter at the bottom, and if it’s splintering there it’s probably doing so at the top. That is not a for sure fix or even a really safe temp fix imo. It’s just something that was done in the OSHI moment because what else could get done quickly? OR they’re just being cheap about it.
I still remember a bank clip on Smoking Gun Presents World’s Dumbest [etc put here] and a guy in a vehicle to large drove into a overhang of a bank and everything just came crashing down. While I assume this is probably stronger than that, that clip and the fact that the SUPPORT BEAM is bent makes me flinch at the thought of them just leaving it as is without fixing it.
No big deal. It’s a cantilever building, supported by the neighboring adjoining building. The pillars are merely added decor.
It looks like the center member is a steel column and that the canopy is not cantilevered. My guess would be that the column buckled at some point for whatever reason, maybe someone hit it. They cut away the facade, which is just decorative, and installed the wood 4x4s as temporary shoring. The 4x4s are not part of the permanent structure, they are in contact in the ground and are not anchored in anyway. It also looks like there is sawdust on the ground around the column. The structure failed, but the shoring is probably an acceptable temporary fix until the actual load bearing steel column can be replaced.
OMG! I’ve been looking at these Kluges for months…and I’ve seen this one in person! It is the US…Langhorne, PA to be exact.
i really don’t think that is legal >_>
I think the tape is there to stop people entering the building from within the column…otherwise looks fine…
