In the US, we have things called building codes which make things as stupid as this illegal.

    • husabob says:

Seeing as the Caution Tape is in English, I’d guess this is in the US. No worries; the core, other than being bent, must’ve passed a structural examination. The external covering provides no support. All hail Damocles, the Engineer!

Yeah, we do, but we also have short memories. Remember the way New Orleans was left hanging a few short years ago? It’s still full of stuff way worse than this, but life must go on. I can also think of several local houses that have technically been condemned, but people still live in them. There are only so many hours in a day, and only so many resources. This would not be a priority situation, I would suppose, in the right area.

      • Uh oh says:

How irrelevant. No building codes are going to save a building submerged under 20 feet of water.

        • kc/cc says:

My point is, there is a lot of stupid and dangerous crap to be found–no one should assume that everything you see is up to code just because you live in America. There apparently aren’t enough people qualified to guard the place, or things that really need attention would get it in a timely manner.

What if they attached floats to it?

These are decorative columns, not structural. Seems like a perfectly adequate TIFI to me.

  12. Chris says:

I can understand the caution, but the do not enter part confuses me. Which part am I supposed to not enter?

  13. stanman13 says:

    “Caution is not the word…”

Now where did I leave that roll of “Run Away” tape?

  14. stevo says:

Maybe they should have put up that caution tape BEFORE someone decided to drive into the pillar.

  15. dono1 says:

That discount store wasn’t kidding when they said, “Take 50% Off Everything”.

  16. Rickster says:

I like the way it says “DO NOT ENTER”, bu the store(s) behind it seem to be open…

The dude who took the phot is closer than I want to get.

  17. aaa says:

Caution: This building is run by cheapskate arses. Do not enter the area or your pocket monies will be taken by the insurance companies.

  18. JB says:

This is the prologue of a kids book entitled “How three little termites destroyed you mom’s shopping mall!”

  19. !vo says:

Тhey would not need the “Do not enter” tape, if they were used duct tape instead! Shame…

  20. Dogmeat says:

This reminds me of a project in school where we built little bridges out of balsa wood and then tested how much weight it could support. The splintered wood went everywhere when they collapsed. I hope the person with the front row seat (taking this picture) above has safety glasses on!

  21. Anodean says:

    Run away! Run away!

  22. smokey says:

And on your right everyone, we see a new use for those dead Tripods left over from the War of the Worlds….

  23. Doc Brown says:

Yes I believe according to HazCom rules where there is immediate possibility of death or severe injury the appropriate word is “DANGER”.

  24. Agni says:

Well, it says “Caution: Do Not Enter”.

If the rest of the building is maintained like this, then I certainly wouldn’t want to enter THAT building.

  25. Random says:

I think it’s going to take more than a couple 4×4 and fiberglass to fix that. Don’t you notice the wood? It is starting to splinter at the bottom, and if it’s splintering there it’s probably doing so at the top. That is not a for sure fix or even a really safe temp fix imo. It’s just something that was done in the OSHI moment because what else could get done quickly? OR they’re just being cheap about it.

I still remember a bank clip on Smoking Gun Presents World’s Dumbest [etc put here] and a guy in a vehicle to large drove into a overhang of a bank and everything just came crashing down. While I assume this is probably stronger than that, that clip and the fact that the SUPPORT BEAM is bent makes me flinch at the thought of them just leaving it as is without fixing it.

  26. Nana says:

No big deal. It’s a cantilever building, supported by the neighboring adjoining building. The pillars are merely added decor.

    • kaharz says:

It looks like the center member is a steel column and that the canopy is not cantilevered. My guess would be that the column buckled at some point for whatever reason, maybe someone hit it. They cut away the facade, which is just decorative, and installed the wood 4x4s as temporary shoring. The 4x4s are not part of the permanent structure, they are in contact in the ground and are not anchored in anyway. It also looks like there is sawdust on the ground around the column. The structure failed, but the shoring is probably an acceptable temporary fix until the actual load bearing steel column can be replaced.

  27. Mary says:

OMG! I’ve been looking at these Kluges for months…and I’ve seen this one in person! It is the US…Langhorne, PA to be exact.

  28. KateCBZ says:

i really don’t think that is legal >_>

  29. BroJabber says:

I think the tape is there to stop people entering the building from within the column…otherwise looks fine…
