Fixer FixerDave says, “It’s a hand-operated arbour press. You’d have to be mighty dumb to get your finger under that and then pull down… never mind. Somebody will do it.”

Seems like a win to me!

  3. mstein says:

    Dave Ramsey would love this!

  4. Elodie says:

Awesome! I want to visit that place. It’s surprising in “today’s world” that they are giving that for free.

  5. dono1 says:

I tend to fret about my charge cards so this idea really struck a chord with me.

  6. Me says:

    What is the kludge?

  7. DB says:

    Ingenious. Simply ingenious.

  8. Pocket says:

    Does Dave Ramsey Play guitar?
    Brilliant!

  9. fordprefect says:

    Fantastic!
-Where do i put the card? Right here?
    -Ooops!
-I guess fingernails would work just as well.

    • Devil Dan says:

Give it a fingernai and it takes the whole finger.

      • Fank Ford says:

I guess you haven’t seen this machine in person. It is absolutely impossible to stick any part of the smallest finger where it might be injured. Not a Kludge at all – it’s a very well designed, completely safe, industrial tool from a pick factory.

  10. This one is just super duper good.

  11. A Random Pooka says:

Not really a kludge, but just as funny as Kool-Aid Man! Oh YEAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!

  12. Snobahr says:

One might say, this is to DIE for! Hurr hurr hurr!

  13. Albert says:

    Best machine ever!

  14. waldo says:

WARNING! Don’t let this thing anywhere near your nostrils, even with the offer of free picks.

  15. Frozenc says:

She’s buying a stairway to heaven….and she gets frequent flyer miles with every purchase.

  16. The Cat says:

Not bad, but “make your own” sounds like customers operating the machine, which seems unsafe…

  17. Krista says:

    where is that at?

  18. Snuggie Cult says:

That’s hilarious. If that’s a store, then I bet they have no problem taking credit cards, though. :)

  19. nikkebirde says:

    I want to use this!!!!!!

  20. Anna Rexia says:

I’d love to find one of those at a local music center. I’ve been cutting picks out of expired credit cards, used gift cards, etc, for a while now. They wear out pretty fast, but hey, free picks!

  21. tyberius says:

This is more of a win than a kludge. But it’s still epic.

  22. Shimmer says:

    Not intended use…

  23. Lynz Catastrophe says:

uuuhhhh… thats not a credit card, its a safeway club card, they are to help you save money when there are sales!

I don’t know about making music, but my wife can make her credit card beg for mercy.

  25. firehawk2324 says:

The best guitar pick that money can buy!

  26. William says:

So those supermarket “club” cards DO save you money – on guitar picks at least.

  27. Jason says:

Does anyone know where this was taken?!?

  28. Patty says:

Photo taken at Gryphon Stringed Instruments in Palo Alto, CA.

  29. qbert says:

    Buying arbor press – $150
Making guitar pick shaped punch & die – $45
Getting mastercard from bank – a piece of you soul.
Turning mastercard into guitar picks – PRICELESS!

  30. John Nash says:

I believe this is at Gryphon Stringed Instruments in Palo Alto, CA.

  31. That pick making machine was originally from the Cork Grip Pick Company in Oakland, California. It’s operated by foot, and dates from the ‘teens and 1920s, if not earlier. If the guy who worked a full shift operating that thing switched legs now and then, he would probably have been able to drop Lance Armstrong on any hill climb…….
You can’t pinch your fingers, or even your fingernails, when using it. We’ve allowed kids, as well as all adults, to use it for over 25 years without a single injury (and always free of charge, pun intended). Credit cards with the user’s photo on them are especially popular, where else can you get a flatpick with your picture on it?

  32. Frank Ford says:

Right – it is at my shop, Gryphon Stringed Instruments. We acquired the machine some 25 years ago from the legendary Campbell Coe who was closing his vintage instrument store in Berkeley, where it had been on display for years. It was originally used at the Kork-Grip Pick Co. in Oakland, CA

In case you might wonder, the machine is so solid, well designed and set up that it is impossible to get any body part in where it could cause damage. Even the littlest kids are encouraged to make picks. Sometimes it takes two – one to hold the material in place and the other to jump on the foot pedal with both feet.

Every so often we have a visitor who belongs on these pages. One tried to punch a pick out of a thin sheet of picture frame GLASS. Fortunately, we were able to grab his arm first. . .

“In case you might wonder, the machine is so solid, well designed and set up that it is impossible to get any body part in where it could cause damage.”
      (I think I smell a challenge)

“Even the littlest kids are encouraged to make picks.”
(We’ve got seven-year olds overseas that we get to crank out ten to fifteen thousand a day)

“Sometimes it takes two – one to hold the material in place and the other to jump on the foot pedal with both feet.”
(or to jump out of the way and call the paramedics)

“Every so often we have a visitor who belongs on these pages. One tried to punch a pick out of a thin sheet of picture frame GLASS.”
(clearly a bad idea. Just imagine the pane…)

“Fortunately, we were able to grab his arm first”
(there it is, hanging next to that Martin guitar)

  33. Anna Rexia says:

There’s a strange echo in here.

  34. Rich says:

That’s just plain awesome! It’s like Bugs Bunny – it’s clever on a few levels.

  35. BluesDog says:

Gryphon Music is a fine shop, with an excellent selection of fine instruments, on the West Coast. The pick machine is cool and beyond reproach, particularly for their suggestion that one use a credit card. It is as the man suggested, safe to operate, except as noted, in the hands of those who are deprived of the most rudimentary form of intelligence. The shop has an excellent website, where one may view the instruments, accessories, amplifiers, and of course, the pick machine. There are few quality music shops of this nature left today because of vicious marketing by MI Giants. Please, support your local independent music stores. In this kind of shop, one can talk with true professionals, instead of wannabes.

  36. Sue spiel says:

I Might “String along” and take a peek – nice recycling of old credit cards!

  37. NatureGeek24 says:

Uh– Credit card…musician…??? Does anyone else see the problem here?

  38. Douglas Raymond says:

We used to cut up plastic Clorox bottles when we were poor in the 70′s. If we wanted a lot of harmonics, we used pinking shears.

  39. greenpeas says:

There’s such a huge amount of unused (as yet) humour here:
variations on which credit card you used, eg. This pick? I never leave home without it!
Or blondes actually stamping their current card and getting a pick with a chip. Does that strike a chord?

    *runs & hides*

  40. recycle plastic says:

I want that machine, where can I get one?
