I wonder if it has a floating point coprocessor.

  2. Mike says:

You know what? That is a good idea…

    • eezchay says:

my dad’s a computer technician, i’m sure he could empty a few cpu’s for me to use as a book case. after all, if u can put a fish tank in an old monitor, u can totally use a computer as shelving.

      • eezchay says:

laminate circuit boards for coasters, but have an expert remove capacitors cuz they could leak a toxic gas if ur not careful. they’re the cylindrical things on a circuit board.

    This is beautiful.

    • Stoneshop says:

Back when computers were the size of several cupboards, and came with several cupboards worth of manuals (known as “the orange wall” for one particular manufacturer), I helped strip a decommissioned system, and convert it into a bookcase. For that orange wall, yes.
Google “vaxbar” for another useful system conversion.

I bet the toilet paper goes on that old joystick.

  10. Stoneshop says:

This is not how you build an e-book reader.

  11. RockyMtnRR says:

Yeah, that’s totally about to happen in my garage. Freaking awesome.

  12. Teebo says:

I have a much taller case than that in my garage, used for leverage(ie cheap sawhorse part) or a table to spraypaint items. The AT power supply? Plenty of good wires inside for homebrew electronics projects.

  13. dono1 says:

I don’t know when Microsoft bought Ikea but it looks like you can now load off-the-shelf software onto your PC and still have plenty of storage space available.

i like the rifle above it…

  16. Asuna says:

Its new its hot, its the intel power wall mounted bookshelf! give it a book and it will hold it! give it your taxes and you’ll go to jail!

  17. AmEv says:

I don’t think that this is a passageway to the Internet.

  27. Sarge says:

Better than throwing it in a landfill. Kudos to the kludger.

  28. Sparrow says:

I’ve used the metal spindles from 3.5″ floppies as jewelry components. Nice and lightweight.

I think this is a Linux system: you mount the volumes (on the wall) in order to access the libraries and (recycling) bin files

  36. RedNekk says:

That is the exact case I’m currently using!!

  37. Hailster says:

This is an awesome idea. The sad thing is that my employer still has several computers similar to this running on our production floor.

  38. Texchanchan says:

Great idea. Now I know what to do with all those computer carcases. Already buried a bunch to stabilize sand under a patio, but they seem to multiply.

  39. one small step says:

I always threatened to turn the tower into a hamster cage, the monitor into a fish tank (before flat screens), the printer into a flower pot, and the speakers into book ends. I guess he doesn’t have hamsters?

  40. carin gleason says:

I wonder why the paperback drive never caught on; perhaps it was the limited storage capacity.

  41. KingCrizzo says:

This kludge inspired me to do the same with one of my old machines. Click my name to see the picture.

    • Church says:

Hey! Is that a Compaq? I think I have the same model that is in there. I currently am running a server off of it for gaming purposes. The thing is an absolute mess with an onboard graphics card and everything -_- my old Gateway laptop was faster. it has a 1 GHz processor as well. AMD single core. ridiculous, but it gets me by on what I got!

  42. minagiv says:

I think when we finally by a new desktop, we know what we’re doing with the tower!!

Squidward stands atop his tower, looks down at this king, and sees all is well.

  46. mh says:

Is that a McMaster-Carr Catalog sitting in the 5.25″ drive bay? It’s got the signature yellow cover, but I can’t quite tell.

No one else has noticed the 1985 Atari-compatible WICO joystick sitting on top of that thing??

  48. danielle says:

    that is actually really cool.

  49. NostalgiaGeek says:

Oh I am SOOOOOOOOOOO doing this when my current chassis no longer meets my needs. Thing is, I’m gonna have to step it up a notch. My case has a pair of LED tubes on the front bezel, and a UV tube on the inside… need to figure out how to get those to run off of some sort of (probably kludged) battery pack. Suggestions my fellow fixers?

    i have the same case
