He’s just trying to yank your cord.

      • Taldar says:

Well, you’ve got the center pins connected, but not the outer shells… so, great idea if it weren’t for the whole problem of needing a complete circuit! ;-D

        • Anon says:

To bad the outer sheath is an EMF shield… learn to not be a retard.

          • soundengineer says:

actually it’s the signal ground and nothing to do with EMF

learn not to be a retard, then look like even more of a retard by calling someone who is right a retard.

              wakakakaka.. LOL.. epic fail..!!!=))

            • eezchay says:

being “retarded” in any “real” way is serious. don’t go around calling someone “retarded” is extremely rude and offensive to mentally retarded people and all others like that. think before you act/speak/type. be grateful you have your health and don’t use a serious condition as an insult. stereotyping can completely ruin your life. its like being gay is bad or something. its not! don’t use things like this as an insult. especially if u haven’t experienced or met people in these situations, it’ll make you a bygomist! (thats not a good thing! hitler was one)

              Sorry, i can’t spell!!!

              • Smirnoff says:

                1. Lighten up. As a Jew who finds anti-semitism something to laugh at, I can safely say that you are taking yourself and your friends far too seriously.

                2. Yes, it’ll make you a bigamist, acting like a bigot causes you to marry multiple wives. Wait, what?

                3. Eating sugar isn’t a good thing – Hitler did that!

                6. Wearing a hat isn’t a good thing – Hitler did that!
                etc.

        • Yorgle says:

Well, the ground would be carried by the other lead. they’re typically tied together at both ends. So it probably worked just fine.

          • 050948196 says:

Well no actually, soundengineer has a point (and the name is a bit of a giveaway), you do need to connect the sheath. Remember when you were 10 and learning about “completing the circuit”?

        • Bp says:

Well if they are both plugged into the same devices in the case of left+right you can usually getaway with this for both the outer connections are bridged… Usually.

    • Kevin says:

No thicko, it’s not a Union Jack, nor a Union flag, it appears to be a saltire, or St Andrew’s flag, i.e. the flag of Scotlamd, not the flag of the United Kingdom (or her navy).

  2. grillologist says:

New video game for Christmas = win.
Not having the correct cables to hook the new video game to Grandma’s TV = fail.
Borrowing LEGO(tm) guy from your little brother’s present to MacGyver a cable = EPIC WIN!

  3. K says:

I remember doing this with a Commodore 64 in the 80′s. Minus the LEGO guy. Just touching the 2 cables and taping them together worked well enough!

  4. Simon says:

    I love it.

  5. SCAScot says:

Unfortunately, this won’t work, as there’s nothing connecting the shields on those cables. Nice try, through.

    • William says:

The outside connector is probably ground on both cables and both are likely to be connected together at both ends, so it is only necessary to have one of them connected.

    • Moua says:

Actually it works, I used the same technique (except tape instead of lego) to link one channel of my Wii to the amp

    • Thom says:

it will work because components share ground on the line level signal so if the red has a barrel connecting the ground, the white would not need it. Nice fix, a little disapointed that there was no duct tape used, though!

  6. Violet says:

Oohh! So *that’s* what pirating cable is.

  7. Lady J says:

quick an easy way to build yourself a solution to the problem. or is that construct? whatever I’m gonna lego of that thought.

  8. Jim Pemberton says:

Given the gender of the jacks, he must be the male man.

  9. Yakko Warner says:

Those blasted music pirates are at it again!

  10. Dhes of Yuggoth says:

Okay, whatever anybody else thinks, this has my vote for Best Kludge Ever.

  11. Muff Master says:

It’s appropriate, I guess. It does look like he is giving both of those adapters a hand job.

  12. TheAntiCat says:

Epic. Truly Epic. I would have never thought about that. Kludge for the record books!

  13. Saiph says:

Don’t laugh too hard. I used Legos last week to convince my company to spend $20k on a measuring device.

They all laughed pretty hard at first. Once the test was successful, there was only the sound of praise.

  14. Boris says:

Actually, this will work, but many dB will be lost (due to the increased resistance (or lowered conductance)). Also, for those who say that the shielding is necessary to get the wire to work, it’s true if you have symmetrized wires AND if you want to avoid the noise (electromagnetic noise got via the antennae property of the wire).

  15. Ellie Jordan says:

That is quite possibly the greatest thing I have ever seen, ever. Or at least in a pretty long time.

  16. hannah says:

My first thought , what’s Freddie Mercury doing there?

  17. brandon says:

    Great Scott! 1.21 Gigiwatts!

  18. Tom Geller says:

I swear, at first I thought someone was torturing a minifig by hooking up a battery to his nipples.

  19. hotclaws says:

Until you can get the right cables,I guess you can soldier on with this:-p

  20. Pat says:

    Lego pirate FTW!

  21. Courtney says:

They should’ve used duct tape instead

  22. klutzo says:

It’s the Queens’s Navy after all.

  23. Sarten-X says:

“Sorry, Mr. Hammer, but I CAN touch this…”

  24. J Magee says:

This actually does work just fine and without loss if between components (would not work to a speaker). This is 3 leads just like a stereo headphone jack. And if you’ve ever tried tape, the Lego guy is much easier.

  25. Smartinist says:

Not exactly UL approved and yet sooo awesome!!!

  26. Hannes says:

    Feel the music! :-)

  27. Paddy says:

    Pirate radio!

  29. MacGyverFan says:

    Now that’s improvising

  30. ChronicWanderer says:

    male-male? Don’t ask/don’t tell.

  31. poetnoknowit says:

M-M? Maybe that’s why he’s smiling. . . there are simply so few female hairdos in the Lego sets, plus the bodies are so two-dimensional. Makes for so little fun. Could’ve used a pn#4214559 with a bit of adjusting.

  32. notanengineer says:

this kludge is older …. you just have to watch “Down Persicope!” again… it was the radio-guy making it an epic movie ! :-D

  33. Raptor007 says:

That wouldn’t work by itself because the grounding isn’t touching on that channel. But it would work if it’s being adapted to a headset jack on either end, because that connector uses a shared ground for left and right.

Either way, it’s a pretty terrible solution.

    • ck159 says:

The lego dude doesn’t seem content with the solution either.

    • Some Random Other says:

I hope you realize that ground is not necessary for cables to work, it just reduces hum.

      • Stoneshop says:

As long as there is one ground connection between both devices, it’ll work. Which can even be mains ground, provided both devices’ chassis are connected to that. Only if you have some high-end dual-mono kit it won’t, but then you won’t have these $1,95 cables either. You may or may not have LEGO, but that’s another matter entirely.

  34. Angrypeanut says:

This would be a pirate conducting a Man in the Middle Attack
    Aghhhhhh!

  35. Mohammed says:

I think its supposed to represent a southern soldier from back in the day. The union is between white and black, and this photo is supposed to represent that it worked. Also to be humorous because it may actually work.

  40. chgo_liz says:

For everyone trying to figure out the pattern on the soldier’s chest, it’s just two criss-crossed bandoliers: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bandolier

    This kludge is sweet!

  41. Bah says:

The technical name for a device of this nature is a “gender bender”, and that is the greatest one I’ve ever seen.

  42. Threethisweek says:

When Radio Shack is closed it’s nice to know you can just raid the kids toy box. We didn’t have a Lego Man, but did try it with a Hello Kitty eraser with bendy arms. Check. Submit my vote for Cutest Kludge Ever!

  43. Heywood says:

I thought those Village People dudes were bigger!

  44. mr_interpreter says:

The TV company cut costs by sending lego men to examine stuff.
