This needs a blu-tack tag, I think.
Gort: Klaatu barada nikto
love the ubuntu marker!
HAHAH, the PEN? That’s a Dell Inspiron 1525N! My mom bought one too
I got the 1420N.
That’s what I thought! I wonder where I could get one.
Has to be a FPS player. Now that’s a precision head shot.
This thing looks like a small character from star wars… oopz
A matchstick? What, are we compensating for something? Hmm?
That’s really firing up the ol’ mouse!
OMG an Ubuntu pen :O
Still can’t tell if it’s a stick or automatic. I can see it’s a 4 speed. Not for use with dial up.
OMG i have the same laptop, its a Dell inspiron 1525
ubuntu pen ftw!
Windows, you have met your match!
I have one of those Logitec trackballs! No matchstick tho.
Surf Wisely.
With the tracking device attached, we can now release the mouse back into the wild and track its migration patterns.
This person apparently runs the same OS that I do and on the same model of computer.
Isn’t that special.
See the ‘n’ on that laptop? Preinstalled.
Wow, I can’t remember the last time I had a ‘model’ of computer. All mine have been frankensteined together for the last 15 years or so. That ended this Christmas when I got my daughter a laptop. Hard to build a barebones laptop up from the ground
And I guess there’s a Mac on it’s way to me. Does this mean I’m becoming mainstream?!?!
Never! Ubuntu runs great on Macs.
I find your lack of faith disturbing. Ubuntu rocks.
Kludged joystick, not so much. Still, I could see myself doing this.
“All right, now talk dammit & I wont have to light you up!”
Now… does it actually work?
Yes it works – needed for better control of flightgear (under ubuntu 9.10). A longer match would be even better . . . .
for the pyromaniac gamer. “Play WoW and set fire to stuff while your at it.”
a cheap way to replace those countless joystick breaks.
Wonder how sensitive you have to set your mouse settings to not be screwed when you roll it to the point that the matchstick hits the chassis of the device? And if you can program a twist in there somehow to ‘lean’ your player?
Talk about getting fired up about your work!!
It could only come from those Linux fanboys, living in their world where crappy workarounds are the norm.
Signed,
Your favorite Mac fanboy.
Mac fanboy? Oh, you mean those people who have been running a GUI shell over Unix for several years now?
Of course, it just struck me that someone tagged as ‘Jessica’ is calling themselves a fan *boy*..
That’s the same model of mouse that I’m using right now…
Perfect for those “Firefights” on Halo…
Boo on the Ubuntu pen! Move away from Playskool Linux please.
Hey, it works. That’s more than you can say about a certain popular closed-source OS…
This mouse looks like an alien who’s got a plunger on his forehead.
This guy is taking the concept of “open source” one step further
pretty novel idea, if you can get a driver around it, ie make it an analog joystick.
This seems entirely in character for a *nix-head. . . .
I dont get it. I’m serious
I’ll wait for a response: whats is ‘Ubuntu’?
Is a distribution of Linux (a good one), the open source operating system, visit ubuntu.com I use it at my office and home in the KDE variant, you can download a live CD to test it.
Thats the same mouse i have been using since 97. Does wonders when playing fps’s. Although i dont have the match stuck in mine.
It’s peripherals like this that remind you just what kind of person uses Linux, and why no one else will touch it, regardless of it’s upsides.
It’s just frightening to look at.
The Ubuntu pen makes perfect sense. A rigged mouse for a rigged PC with a rigged OS. Linux users do it on a barebones budget… The OS of choice for PC dumpster-divers.
Why you would pay a premium for Mac hardware and load any Linux on it is beyond me. Kinda like buying a Bentley and retrofitting it with a Ford Mustang interior.
Have you ever actually used Linux? You seem to think being open-source is a bad thing. It’s not perfect (even then, a fair number of its flaws are to be blamed on manufacturers) but it has several advantages over Windows/Mac for power users.
There isn’t really an accurate car analogy to be made. It’s literally comparing Apples and oranges (or at least something with a lot of shades of orange). Both have advantages and disadvantages.
Literally?
Hey, you can make one of them Big Mouth Billy Bass fish talk using Linux can’t you?
This from someone who doesn’t know the difference between a mouse and a trackball…obviously, an A+ and MSCE expert here.
(Not that I think this is a Mac PC in the picture. Someone above suggested that a new Mac owner should install *nix on his Mac, effectively replacing a specialized OS optimized for his (expensive) PC with a general OS that *defines* the “There I Fixed It” DIY ethic…)
This kludger never played “track and field” (and destroyed N Tac2′s ) on the C64.
I dont get it… whats the point of this? I have that same trackball (2 in fact) and its not that high dpi so havin it basically on a fixed rotation wouldnt give very much room to actually USE it. Maybe he uses the touch pad on the laptop most of the time and uses it for fine tuned movement like headshots or somethin. Still seems kinda pointless tho
Now *that’s* a question I had seeing this–whether you could actually crank the sensitivity up to make it work right with the limited movement range.
“I know I dropped my lolly pop somewhere around here…Oh, there it is!”
The trackman balls roll over sensors in the lower back inside of the pointer device. Maybe this guy can’t figure out how to pry out the ball every so often to clean mouse fuzz (like a computer form of navel lint) off the lens? Perhaps that is meant to be a tiny suction device?
Now I must warn you when using my mouse: scroll slowly and gently!
I have so much respect for whoever did this. You are my new god.
Joystick for human beings.
“Dude, I’m doing great with this game! I’m on FIRE!”
…as the captain raised the parascope, a chill ran down his spine. There it was, his target, just off the port bow. A leviathan-laptop bearing the menacing XP flag. Their mission was to conduct the first ever live-fire test of the open-source missile fitted to the hull. Operation “Linux” had been in top-secret development for years and this was the ultimate test. The science team had assured him this weapon could “shatter windows with ease” but he was still uneasy; if this didn’t work, the laptop would come crashing down on him with more glitches then he cared to think about. Taking a deep breath to calm his nerves, he ordered “arm the payload”…
This is not a mouse. This is a dead rat (a trackball). Goddamnit people.
just make sure you have a fire blanket er well fire tissue ready or mommies going to know what types of sites you went on when she was at the grocery store.
i have the same mouse!
….I have that exact mouse
WANT PEN!
Why does he have an Ubuntu pen?
to answer all your questions about usability. i tested this and i was able to traverse my entire monitor (22″ 1920×1080) with the limited movement. I had to adjust my pointer speed all the way up but it works.
