Copy & paste this:

Mhhh, looks like a mobile coffin. Maybe Draculas caravan?
untreated particle board doesn’t always do well when wet. gotta watch out for termintes too.
That isn’t particle board; it’s chipboard. Still needs some sort of waterproofing, though. Maybe this was a temporary fix until they could get a replacement? Either that or he took the term “deck lid” in a wrong way.
It is oriented strand board (OSB)
why not use the origonal hinges??
He was to jealous of his neighbor owning one of these:

so he decided to do something about it…
Hey! That color is Lime Green Metallic #40. I ordered a Malibu in that color that year. It was the only new car I ever bought. Everybody thought I was crazy to get that color. It’s good to see it again. I believe it was available on any GM make and model except Corvette, but it was not popular. I’ve seen it on full-sized Cadillacs and on Vegas.
A friend of mine had a Nova in that color. Awesomeness.
What color? Chipboard?
Thats gonna swell up like a sponge the first time it rains. Also, would have loved to see the make and model wordburned into the back!
Alli it needs is a duct tape top coat to solve the water thing.
If he only had said sth, I would have lended him the piano roof.
This actually could have looked sort of cool and steampunk-esque if the kludger had used something other than particle board.
It just needs a racing stripe and it will be ready to go.
The lock adds that special touch…
Just don’t leave anything in there that’ll bounce back after a sharp brake. Like a loose bowling ball—it’ll hit the back, shoot out of the particle board, and maim the radiator of the car behind him. And if humor is on his side, a Chevy Caprice Classic (thank you, Jompe71) will be that car.
Again, I cannot really fault this guy (or girl). He probably effected this completely workable repair–and he could easily waterproof it with a can of cheap deck stain–for maybe $50. A body shop guy would have probably yawned and handed him an estimate for $1000 for a junkyard trunk door and $2000 for a new one.
(It’s also worth noting that this guy/girl is probably a carpenter and did a *really good job* fitting the plywood, cutting out the fiddly bits around the edges, adding the hinges, a padlock, etc. Heck, they’re probably getting a little bit better fuel efficiency from the reduced weight.)
So yeah, no: Life just becomes incomparably easier when you stop thinking of your car as any kind of a status symbol and start thinking of it as purely utilitarian transportation.
Except this would be totally unsafe in an accident, is not even remotely legal, and isn’t weatherproof… but other than that, what a great idea….
He will probably get a citation for not having his License Plate lighted.
Oh easy, just set the trunk on fire
Love the lock.
Nevermind that the hinges could be removed with a screwdriver. But really, who even has one of those?
It doubles as a shed door!
He musta been bored…
No, the last hitchhiker he abducted kicked their way out of the trunk. Hence, also, the exterior padlock on the new lid.
Bob Vila takes a stab at reviving the defunct Oldsmobile brand!
Portable carbon sequestration.
The Ninety-Eight…..now with economy-friendly crumple zone!
Why even bother with the padlock? It’s clear if you used plywood to fix the body of the car that anything valuable that anyone would steal out of your trunk is probably something that is outside of your budget already.
the lock is used to hold the trunk down
It seems like the owner misunderstood the meaning of a “woody” car.
really quite tactfully done. well done old chap (or, chapette)
me and my lumberjack buddies could rip this to shreds in 3 mins tops…
must be for grndma’s food for the week
Really can’t tell but it looks like the interior is decked out in plywood? My dad made a bumper out of a 2×6 once. He sees this and the wooden car will become a reality one day.
Hep! And after a crash or car pill-up on the highway you would just need to burn the thing down, which would take less than the time needed to clear the crash with towings!
30 some years ago I saw the same thing done by a contractor. He found a mid-70s Caddilac that had been rear ended and he built a new trunk out of wood. It looked odd, but it was functional and worked for him.
why not just go to the junk yard and get a trunk lid pull a part gets 22.89 it cost that in wood and hinges
Where do you live? Junk yards are a thing of the past, especially those large enough to have a wreck/parts car of even the most obscure model. The closest thing now is recycling centers, where some parts are sent off to warehouses (in which you can search online for local or mail-order parts), and the rest is ground up to be sent to a recycler.
There’s still some of those “Pick Your Part” places, but I heard those can be as expensive and buying brand new.
Any minute now Xzibit is going to swagger up the owner’s driveway…
“Particle Man, Particle Man, doing the things a particle can, particle board as his trunk lid, Particle Man.”
The interior IS decked out with plywood – and if i’m not mistaken, i believe that it is set up in a box shape, most likely connecting the trunk area with what used to be the back seat – which means that the car has been modified more than just kludged – he’s gone and made a sedruk or a tradan. yeah, i like “pickup tradan.”
It’s like an el camino with a covered trunk.
In this case, the junk is the trunk.
Thats where he keeps The Gimp.
PBS & MTV announce their new reality show, “Bob Vila, Pimp my Ride!”
It’s almost ready for the 2010 24 Hours of LeMons.
Heh. You said LeMons. Got something else on your mind, eh?
Obviously the car of a Thompsons Waterseal salesman.
its easier to chase the hitchhiker with the new false hope wooden trunk lid assembly
That’s the MN license plate we require people with over 3 DWIs to have. Then they can get pulled over for no reason, constantly. Anyway, yes, non-lighted plate is also a problem…
Lighted plate only required at night time.
The only car on the road that comes with termites.
Somebody needs to tell this guy that OSB doesn’t stand for “Old Sedan Boot”.
That plate looks like a Minnesota “whiskey plate” – get nailed for DUI and one of those is yours.
Okay, I got nothing for this, but I desperately want some type of “Wooden Pimperfish” comment…
A little help here?
