Actually, in Elder Scrolls IV, paintbrushes aren’t subject to gravity. They’re very useful little deviants.
Easy, paint brushes are not effected by gravity. Months of making ladders with them in Cyrodiil taught me that.
Obviously, what we don’t know is that that paint is actually superglue.
Why grip the brush tightly? Sarcasm! Thats why! LOL
Must be one of those fast-drying paints with really good adhesion.
Why is the ladder going to fall? If you examine the photo you’ll notice that those are rigid rods (phnarr, phnarr) presumably firmly attached to inside the building. If the foot of the ladder is properly secured (which in itself would prevent the ladder from moving; the rods just reduce the stress on the ladder), then that ladder ain’t going nowhere!

I had to bolt the ladder to the floor to paint the trim.

Guess you missed the ropes tieing off the ladder?
he’s got ropes on the top… i’d guess he’s got one at the bottom…
Please note the metal supports hooked to the ladder and to somewhere inside the building. Assumming the ladders bottom is securely attached as are the supports that Aluminum ladder should take quite a bit or work to knock over.
He has a rope either side tied back to a bar across the window so he’s safe. Just physics and a bit of Geometry.

Once I had to paint the eves on a three story house in Springfield, MA. To reach the peak you had to stand on the handrail while leaning out and back. The other painter who was afraid of heights grasped me around the legs.
Looking at this photo brings back very scary memories! I’d never do “that” again.

Just looking at that gives me vertigo – that guy is either dumber than toast or has brass you-know-whats.
Look closer. The ladder is very secure.
Having worked in the trade I can tell you this is actually common practice for painting windows on upper floors. The set up is two hooks behind the window frame, with the ladder resting on the sill and leaning against the bottom of the frame. You can see how the ladder spreads towards the bottom, that’s to provide more stability. It’s very stable and perfectly safe. No kludge at all, you can probably still buy the equipment from a hardware wholesaler. In the 70s everyone would have done it that way.
Yep. I agree, I’ve seen painters use this set up before and it has been common equipment. Those that think it’s rope, please examine the image closer. The -bars- are quite “J” shaped.
I was going to say something along those very same lines. It’s not even remotely unsafe. Well, I guess he could stumble off the ladder or drop the can of paint? But it isn’t a kludge. Those hooks are designed for exactly what he’s doing with them. This one’s a fail.
Who needs a stable ladder when you have a wing and a prayer?

Not to worry – it is a church and god is watching over the whole fiasco – providing he doesn’t get busy elsewhere at a wrong moment.
That isn’t a church, it’s a house. Probably a Bed and Breakfast somewhere in the south of England.

I’m with Mr Obvious and A Random Pooka. This is entirely safe. Just look (with yer eyes open) at how the ladder is secured. I’ve been a painter and I would do this, no problemo.
I love how this is clearly common practice, judging by the non-jury-rigged bars holding the ladder.
I don’t care how proven it is, common mentality would dictate climbing OUTSIDE the building. With my fear of climbing tall things more promenent than my moderate fear of heights itself, this seems like a damn cool idea.
Thats how a MAN gets a house painted.

The ladder is stable enough. In fact this is possibly safer than a ladder used ‘conventionally’.
My only reservation is how high is the window, given it’s being done like that? If the painter _did_ fall (and even with a perfectly solid ladder, a person can still fall off it), is the fall a lethal height?
There should be two buckets there – one for the paint and another one to put the crap in when the ladder accidentally slides an inch or two.
Meanwhile, downstairs three men balance on a beam while painting the walls.
Am I crazy or is it photoshopped? Check out the strap on the left, right around his knee. It stops at his knee, and then starts again at his elbow? Or maybe it’s just a weird angle, but it’s definitely strange.
Nothing to get excited about. When everything goes wrong the cameraman will save the day.

No, it’s Toon Physics. Long as he doesn’t look down he’ll be fine.
I am actually a painter and this isn’t a bad idea. I’ve been in situations before where you just can’t get to the top of an exterior window. If you look you can see that he has the ladder tied off to the inside. I would like to thank this guy for the tip.

Actually, if anyone here has played Elder Scrolls Oblivion, he could just let go of the paintbrush, it would float, and he could stand on that.

I don’t see the problem at all. It is a temporary situation, he will be careful.
I have done similar stuff to stain my log home. Used an aluminum extension ladder standing straight up, in the middle of the bottom landing, and a 14′ 2×12 plank running horizontally across the top outside stairs landing extended thru the ladder at the appropriate rung, then screw a couple wood scabs from the plank to the handrail to keep it all from shifting sideways. Works super. It’s not like it will be ther for more than a couple hours and allows for a long plank to actually work more safely than off a ladder leaning from a stair.
this isn’t nearly as ridiculous as watching them paint the INTERIOR with a ladder truck.
