  3. Jompe71 says:

This kludge could seem to be a good one until’ it on the platform pokes an old woman in the ass and as a result the railroad company gets a lawsuit for sexual harassment.

  4. Sketchy says:

I’ve sold monorails to Brockway, Ogdenville, and North Haverbrooke, and by gum, it put them on the map …

  5. waldo says:

I like the guy. He’s not interested in this kludge. He has his mind on other things nearby.

  6. jake says:

am i the only one who hears the monorail song from the Simpson

  7. Kuba says:

Forget the kludge. Do you notice how people can’t stand up inside? TRWTF is that this monorail car is designed for little people. Where the heck is this?

    • shorty82 says:

That is one of the Disneyland Monorails. The ceilings are low on them but then again they aren’t designed for standing, all of the passengers sit. There are severe height restrictions along the route so they couldn’t make the trains any higher.

    • Bruce says:

It’s Disneyland, and the original trains were deliberately built at ~5/8 scale because the original ALWEG design (still running in Seattle) would have been too big. It was a prototype system, and they didn’t want “Huge”. So Bob Gurr scaled them down.

(Just like the DL Railroad, 3′ Narrow Gauge with ~5/8 scaled cars.)

Over the years the Monorail trains got longer by adding two passenger cars in the middle and extending the station platforms, but they can’t get larger or they would start to hit things like buildings, and the bottom of the other beam where they cross under…

  17. Bruce says:

I should submit the photo to ASME.org, they’ll revoke the Mechanical Engineering Landmark plaque…

This is fairly recent kludge – this photo has Monorail Red with the “third generation” windows fix, with the tilt-out bottom and half-open top. Can’t have a hole big enough to jump out of like the old trains used safely for decades…

And it has the first fix they tried, the emergency exit hatch on the roof with the grafted on vent scoops. When the new monorails first arrived the windows didn’t hardly open at all, and anytime it was over 80-F outside they turned into Easy Bake Ovens…

Now THAT whole mess is truly worthy of an “I Fixed It!” There was over a year of finger-pointing on who messed it up, when it was a comedy of oversights on all sides – search the archives at for the whole grisly story.

I took this picture in November of 2008. Yes, it’s one of the newer monorails at Disneyland. Kludges don’t last long there so I was happy to get the shot!
