This isn’t a kludge! That’s called cable support. I haven’t seen it this extreme before, but it is common to use wire cabling to support tree branches.

Really? The Farmington river has dried up? That’s news to me. It’s about a quarter mile away (maybe less) from the river, and the river hasn’t been any closer to the tree since 1955 (a famous flood).

This tree was once near a popular fishing spot, the river has since dried up and been paved over.
