NOW we’re getting back to what this site is all about!! Excellent kludge. Good use of available materials. Should keep you passenger from getting too cranky.
This looks like something the Professor from Gilligan’s Island kludged together. A bamboo handle shaft with an odd leftover trinket for the knob, all held on with a couple of palm leaf fibers.
The Professor?
The guy who made a friggin’ car out of bamboo? The guy who made a satellite dish out of a coconut but couldn’t fix an 18″ hole at the waterline of a 30′ boat?
That guy didn’t want to be found is all…
Let’s see… he’s one out of four guys on the island; one is married, one is an overweight control freak, one is young, klutzy and overall a total goof, and the Professor, who is worldly, very intelligent and good looking. Of the three women on the island, two are young and hot. Now tell me why the professor would want to find a way off the island.
I say go for Mrs. Howell. She’s rich and she’s old.
Looks like a liquor bottle top for the handle, I guess I would be making crap like this if I finished off a bottle in one night too.
If you are going to do that, might as well go with this idea: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sifauq0mXKI
Thnx Caleb, I didn’t know that show, but it’s hilarious!
I wish I still had manual windows! You can’t hardly find them anymore. I hate that you need a key just to get a little fresh air in the car. And the power windows are so dang expensive to fix! What you need to do is come up with a kludge to fix a power window!!
Find the voltage requirement of the window motor (probably 12v but you never know). Wire direct from the battery harness, inline fuse, to the window switch and voila, no need for a key. You put the new circuit onto one side of a DPDT switch and the “key on” one to the other side. Key on? Flip to original circuit. Key off, switch to direct power.
Note: Anyone who wants to minimize their future repair bills will likely specifically ask for a car with manual windows. My mother being one example.
I do! I hope never to be so lazy I can’t crank down my own window.
My only grudge against manual windows is the fact that if someone in the passenger’s seat forgets to close it, I can’t reach across to do it unless I actually pull over, put it in park, unfasten my seatbelt, scoot half-way over, and then do it myself. I’m that short. I loved the gas mileage I was getting out of my 92 Honda, but I don’t miss having to pull over every time my son forgot to close the window if I dropped him off.
Hey, look at the shape… it’s Windows 7 =)
And he matched the colour of the interior as well!
Flint Stones diehard. yaba yabadooo
Wrap the whole thing with duct tape and you get a GM OEM part!
Minus the $89.95 price tag, of course. (Hey, they had to pay a union guy to drink all that Gin first)
Say what you will, but no man who drinks Gordon’s Gin is without class!
Strangely enough, my 2004 Dodge Neon has power windows in the front and automatic windows in the rear. But then again this is a bankrupt U.S. car manufacturer so I’m not surprised.
Make that manual windows in the back.
My God, is that a Lincoln log?
Looks like a mop or broom handle to me.
*takes notes*
mine just broke today. Thanks, TIFI!
I still have manual windows too, wich I have to close pulling by hand the mains plug.
Someone is too fancy for pliers!
This would actually be a great addition to a rat rod. The Gordon’s Gin cap is a nice touch.
I’ve got an idea for A/C…I need a Broom, Twist ties and a bottle of Gin.
Wooden it have been better to have used a large bead or something similar for the handhold? I worry that the metal cap will cut into the car owner’s friendship one day.
Gotta be a single guy. Otherwise, he’d more likely have access to a sewing thread spool.
I’m pretty sure this is in a Volkswagen. They used the same window crank base (the part that screws into the winder gear that pokes out through the door panel) for many years, and on numerous models. The handle length, knob and trim changed, but all used the same base. Most of them were made from pot metal and very prone to breakage. Thus, it looks like the owner of this car got tired of repeatedly buying new window cranks, and is a DIY kinda guy. He may not be able to quickly raise or lower the window, but hey, if it works, it’s all good.
HA! I grew up in a long line of VW’s named after Peanuts characters. With 2 kids, you’d think we would have managed to break one or two handles, but we never did. Must be a “guy” thing. I wish I had a picture of the VW bug (can’t remember what year) my mom kludged into a micro-camper by removing the passenger and rear seat. Anything that didn’t fit in the space behind the seat and under the hood, went on the roof-rack. We traveled from OH to CA and back. When it started leaking, she drilled a hole in the floor and put a bathtub plug in it. She had to have the driver’s side door welded shut because the hinge broke. When she went to trade it in, the guy offered her $50 to get it off his lot.
If you wind the window down you can hang your bloody hand out the window to air dry.
It’s the Kon Tiki Adventure…Yugo edition.
BTW-
Q- Why do Yugos have rear window defrosters?
A- To keep your hands warm when you’re pushing them.
Win!
That’s the Deluxe Edition. Mine just came with a pair of oven mittens.
Pure art.
If it breaks I will just eat more bread.
I want to see a door knob on one of these window cranks.

Manual windows? Naaah! My last hobby car was a really neat ’67 Galaxie 2door hardtop that was a real blast to drive with all windows down, but it was manual windows. There was no way to reacjh all the way across the car to the opposite side handles, so I useds to haveto pull off the Interstate or street, unbuckle my seat belt and slide over to the passenger side if it started to rain, or if I just wanted to raise or lower them. Now I used to own a ’90 Mitsubishi hatchback with manual winders, but the car was so no big deal. I say make ‘em all power winders standard equipment. No de-evolution or backsliding.
that is totally epic and it look like what i had to do to my old pick up. which i am proud to say has manual windows, door locks, tranny, and no power steering
Recent excavations have discovered the ancient town of Bedrock. Featured here is a prehistoric automobile that somehow managed to survive the meteor strike and the subsequent years of civilization’s rebirth and development…must have been a Chevy.
