I think Stef is on to something. Quick, I need a pulley system, a frayed rope and a metal cage elevator from a condemned building! – Ms. Fix-It

  1. no_one says:

Wow the supports survived the painters and the satellite’s TV technician, Woodchucks or drunk drivers won’t be problem.

  2. Solaris says:

Woodchucks? I assume you’re implying that the posts at the bottom are wood? That would also imply that you think woodchucks(Groundhogs) chew wooden posts. They do not.

    • Diana says:

Actually, woodchucks/groundhogs, like all rodents, must frequently (or in some cases continually) gnaw on wood in order to keep their incisors from growing too much and covering their mouths. It’s not quite as extreme for a woodchuck as, say, a beaver, but all rodents have to do this to survive.

More importantly, I believe Mrs. Fix-it was *gasp* making a cultural allusion to a children’s rhyme. Such things are often done when one is being funny.

      : )

    • Bobert bomb says:

“How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck COULD chuck wood?” so I agree, woodchucks won’t be a problem.

    • Anna Rexia says:

The “supports” are bamboo, thus the Pandas reference as well.

  3. Richard says:

Actually, this doesn’t look that bad to me. Think about how telephone poles (also rural power poles) are typically constructed. Hell, if you have pier and beam construction and an older house, just take a look at your foundation! Those supports are not exactly narrow, mismatched, or old and rotting. The facade is, sure, but not the supports.

  4. nimrod says:

Yeah, the balcony’s been having some pretty serious financial problems lately; had to pawn its support beams and everything. Don’t worry though, it’ll get em back once it’s on its feet again.

  5. one small step says:

Is it just me, or does the balcony look better the higher up you go? Does that mean the executive suite gets preferential treatment?

  6. foo says:

Are those balconies being held up by bamboo?

    Woodchucks don’t chuck wood.

  16. Angela says:

Yes, it’s bamboo, very strong and a common building material in Asia. The posts are just where you’d put cast iron or treated wood posts so it’s structurally sound. Without knowing where this is, it’s hard to know if this is even odd.

  17. Sarkasm says:

*Looks at the cars parked below*
Once, I sent my car in my hedge because I put it in forward instead of reverse…
I just hope it doesn’t happen to them….

    • BoringTroll says:

To a limited extent, the balcony floors are cantilevered out from the building. As long as there wasn’t a dance party or a full hottub out on a balcony, the balconies probably wouldn’t sag more than a few inches if the bamboo was knocked out. Only one corner would sag, the other corner has the sturdy looking concrete wall for support.

Note that sagging a few inches would break a lot of stuff, so there would be a lot more to repair.

This could be New Orleans! I’ve seen buildings like this in the Treme.

  28. Jon says:

Those posts might be strong enough to support the structure, but I’m concerned about the stability of it. They don’t appear to be fastened to anything; one in the middle is standing on top of a rock. It wouldn’t take much to knock them out of place.

  29. Thinker says:

Evidently Gilligan and The Skipper have moved into the ground floor.

  34. Ben says:

I consider modern “Zoning” laws a tyranny against mankind with true malice to man’s freedom.

There used to be this place called “The Walled City of Kowloon” which was technically “NOT” owned by either China or Hong Kong. So, people who were either too poor to live in the fancy new apartments, or people on the run or outside the law, or people just into freedom moved there. And lived for generations. It lasted nearly a century and was “There, I fixed it” many many many times over…

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kowloon_Walled_City

Originally, there was a wall and a temple in the middle, kinda. Then a few high-rise apartments were built, but it would have looked 1/10th as dense. People built up, they built sideways, they built down. The entire area in the middle was ceilinged over and eventually had enough dwellings it’d support it’s own weight without any central beams. In the middle was a Buddhist temple which never saw light for 40 years, it just had lightbulbs dangled down from its pastiched “Sky”, a big net to catch garbage and when it rained outside, the rain filtered down, hissing when a stray drop or two hit the bulbs.

Inside it was a treacherous yet warm maze of residences, Tong headquarters, massage parlors, brothels, stores, restaurants, unlicensed dentists…

But eventually the fascist pigs, of whatever political facade decided they could not anywhere have anyplace people were at least “Free” so they literally took an army to evict everyone then it took years to tear down it was so dense.

  35. O.B. Juan says:

After a long and arduous search, archeologists finally discover the home of RumpelSTILTskin.

  36. james says:

There is a lot of fail in the comments above. Bamboo may be strong, but it is not suitable for structural use such as this. Also, there is no evidence that the porches are cantilevered. Why would they need all the posts if that were the case? The bamboo posts are not even centered under the point loads (ie. in the right place, with stacked loads above. They are not large enough for that much bearing. They are not attached correctly top or bottom. They are not protected from cars impacting them. They have no shear strength or protection. This is a disaster waiting to happen.

  37. kampsss says:

that’s why is so f*ckin’ hilarious james!!!!!

  38. Ell-Jay says:

Umm … where’s the duct tape?
