Use asphalt millings. Google for an asphalt plant located near you, and purchase them from them. Or try to find an asphalt paving company who does their own milling - they will probably sell you some.

The plants buy millings from contractors @ around $7/ton - so assume about twice that.

They will compress much better and last much longer than just aggregate.

And if you really want to use the shingles - just use them like shown above and cover w/ an aggregate - kind of like a semi permeable geotextile fabric - except the white trash edition.

you know.... i have considered the same damn thing. i live on a private gravel road, with the whole left side belonging to us. on the other side there are 3 owners; 2 good neighbors and an asshat family who drive too fast, beating huge potholes in our graveled road. they will not chip in for new gravel, either. nor will they slow down, prefering to hit the holes wide open *stabs*.

i wonder if the shingles could be run through a wood chipper so they are less obviously shingles (and therefore look better)

Don't laugh too hard. The house I bought in Florida a few months ago has layers and layers of shingles and strips of carpet layed down at the edge of both front and back of the concrete carport - apparently to keep the car from sinking into the sand too far. Although quite effective, I will be doing an improvement project here...
