  1. Kurt says:

This isn’t a kludge. Fail on the post but props to the guy who made this.

    • tbholliday says:

Oh, it’s definitely a kludge, but it’s a pro one. This guy deserves a round of applause.

    • linda porter says:

this is a cool idea except when he uses the hand hes holding the board with to scratch his head and then the board comes up and smacks him right in the face

  2. James says:

If that blade hits a large rock, he’s gonna need some duck tape to hold his teeth together.

  3. Danny says:

Sure, he made the kids a snow fort, but he tore down their tree fort to make it.

  4. RickRussellTX says:

Hey, that’s pure win. Inventive and effective.

  5. JB says:

Summer lawnmower goes winter-plower! Pretty good but, as James said, will cost a visit to the dentist.

  6. Daniel says:

What? Is he really holding the shovel with one hand? No way.

  7. monkeyslayer56 says:

i don’t see y u guys are saying it wil requir a visit to the dentist because it looks to me that the handle will fly forward not backwards…. but then again it could through him :D

  8. K says:

Someone patent a (safe) attachment for a riding mower to plow snow before this guy breaks his nose.

    • Lear says:

They already make attachments to turn riding lawn mowers into snow blowers.

They are outrageously expensive. My $2200 mower was going to require a $1400 kit to upgrade to plow snow.

I bought a really nice tracked snow-blower for $600 instead and called it good.

  9. Truthiness says:

I don’t think Mr. Plow will have to worry about any competition here.

  10. HUSABOB says:

No wheel weights, no chains, no way, in any conditions but powder snow. Epic bad kludge. You spent the $ for a Cub Cadet, now pony up the bucks for a snowblower attachment and proper bits. “Hey kids, hold my egg nog and watch this.”

  11. Pat says:

That is impressive. Why buy two lawn appliances when one can serve as both?

  12. Marktavian says:

He should turn the plow blade horizontally and have one of the kids sit on it with a shovel.

  13. Sam says:

Wow, you commenters are horrible with mechanics. It’s obviously attached to the vehicle about 6 inches up from the connection with the shovel.

He probably constructed that so that he could raise the shovel to get over rocks and bumps and otherwise change the angle of it with ease (read up on lever-arms).

Also, because it is a lever arm, and such a long one at that, it would be very easy to control with one hand. Additionally, if it hit a rock, the blade would be pushed back, pulling the handle away from the driver instead of “into his teeth” as the first commenter suggested.

    • Dan says:

unless the fulcrum(s) break on said rock.

      • Sam says:

Even so, I’d put a wager that it would pop up and over his head instead of into it. The only way the fulcrum would break is if he put enough force on the bar to break it, more likely his arm would be pulled up to it’s max stretch and if he was unlucky he would keep pulling and break his contraption, but only then, not when his face was in danger.

Even if your premise is true and it does break and is traveling backwards, the bumper of the vehicle would take most of the force and because the blade is a convex curve on the back side it would form another fulcrum, which would also push the bar away from the guys face.

    • narks says:

I think it all depends on how well the pivot points function. If the lower one is loose and the upper one tight (which seems very likely to me- the top needs to be stable so as not to be a pain in the ass that you have to hold up the whole time, while the lower needs to be loose enough to make lowering and raising the shovel possible) upon hitting a rock the shovel will travel upward, tipping at the lower pivot point. If there is even a slight catch in the upper joint, it will subsequently travel backward into his face.
The smarter kludge would have the same front apparatus but with the control lever on only one side.

  14. Ben says:

No Chains, no movement. Even if he’s aiming down hill.

  15. Rob says:

I like it. I’m tempted. It’d be brilliant if he angled the blade to the side so he didn’t get an enormous load of snow – he might even be able to avoid the chains and weights.

  16. Stef says:

The snow removal budget was cut once again…citizens are revolting. And so is that workmanship.

  17. Yes to those who said he’s gonna get smacked in the face when it shudders vertically, but if the rock is off to the side and twists the blade, the driver will be skewered on the 2×4.

  18. friesorfruit says:

This is actually very inovative. I doubt he is going fast enough to hurt himself if he hits a rock. It gets the job done.

  19. Teebo says:

I think MAKE magazine needs to look at this pic & come up with its own version of this. This guy’s onto something.

    • Anna Rexia says:

No, I think he’s not onto something, but on something. Maybe a few shots of whiskey to “help warm up” while putting that thing together. Indeed, he could benefit from the talent of some of the people from MAKE.

  20. Ddddave says:

Do you suppose they will start selling the wood frame snowplow attachment for the Cub Cadet at Home Depot anytime soon?

  21. neal says:

I say almost nil on the teeth breaking risk. Looks like one bolt through the rear portion so it cam pivot foward and make getting on and off easier. It’s nearly vertical so it wouldn’t take much effort to hold in that position. The tractor without chains or weights isn’t going to get up much speed and it looks like it’s leaving a little snow on the drive yet so I’m guessing skids on the bottom edge to reduce blade friction on the ground.
A one handle on the side set up might be nice but this way left and right handed drivers can both use it.
Making it out of wood prevents your hand or tongue from freezing to it as well.
I give it a thumbs up!

  22. Marvin says:

They actually make real snow plow attachments that mount to the mower deck brackets when the deck is removed. I guess the toss up is the cost of the real blade, vs. a trip to the dentist when he hits something hard and frozen with the blade.

  23. joe says:

there’s no way this guy’s arm will be able to withstand a push from the “plow” blade, “fulcrum” or no.

i hope his dental is paid up.

  24. Jeremy Kuehl says:

I agree, pure genius! 100% Iowa ingenuity. But watch those teeth Steve our dental insurance isn’t all that great!

  25. Logan says:

What world is it where the dude can afford a Club Cadet riding mower…but not a snow blower?

  26. james says:

This guy is retarded. As one who has been plowing snow for years with my garden tractor, you need chains, and wheel weights, firs of all. Also, you can get a good plow for that tractor for around $350. That rig won’t last, and won’t work well. You need an angled plow. Pushing it straight won’t go very far in more than a couple inches of snow. That rig might hurt you, won’t do a good job, and will probably damage your nice tractor. He’s got a top notch tractor with a redneck plow. WTF?
