It’s a clever way to use the space in the corner. And the light switch is still accessible.
Tectonic drift can be a real problem in some areas.
Hmm looks like a bit of a paradox, I believe Ikea sells it as the “Escher Bookcase”
Win!
Actually, I think it’s listed as:
ESKSHOOR bookcase – available in Birch, White, and Black-Brown.
Good to know:
Coordinates with other products in the ESKSHOOR series. (TV unit, CD Tower, Coffee table, and Glass-door Wall Cabinet (yeah, you should really see that one)
This product requires assembly, case of beer, and creative thinking because our instructions have no words, only Swedish cartoons.
Our new Cthulhucase will open your mind to new dimensions!
And with warehouse direct pricing, you’ll get to that other dimension without breaking the bank!
Heil to IKEA!
That doesn’t look too hard to put toger. Just take off the side of one, overlap, then re-add the shelves. Or was there something “unique” about the construction of these shelves?
Either way, that is a REALLY cool bookshelf!
My guess is, that back in the corner the two sideboards are connected with duct tape.
It looks like 2 identical book cases with the shelves staggered. Most come with pegs that you can put in pre-drilled holes to adjust the shelves to a desired height. The fact that (s)he chose to put them in the corner and “weave” them makes perfect sense if you have to make room in poorly laid out space. Not an actual “kludge” since there was no bubblegum, duct tape, or zip ties used, but still, very clever use of the space provided.
I think that one of the shelfs if flipped… only a theory though.
That looks like the perfect shelf for my collection of Higgs bosons.
I was going to call it quantum entanglement!
The more I look at it, the more I see that I believe one shelving unit is upside-down. As the one on the right has no extensions at the top like the one on the left does. Though, theses days book shelf makers are smart enough to put a base piece on, so perhaps this is just peg adjustment? I’m not really sure….
I was just about to say. That’s probably the only way to get the peg hole offset without taking out the drill.
The shelves are not evenly spaced. The shelves are adjustable.
the left hand one looks upside down to me too, as it’s the same overall height but has no top piece. That’s pretty much what you get if you stand an Ikea bookcase on it’s head.
Wrong! I doubt it’s upside down. If these are identical shelves, then both tops would line up and they wouldn’t have been able to do this.
So that’s why you need to flip one!
I think I see shelf track stuff attached to the walls. This is clearly the product of a well thought out design, with workmanlike execution. Well done.
Aside from possibly appearing to an outsider as if the shelves were somewhat disorganized, I don’t see what the big deal is. Looks to me like a good use of space on a budget.
I love it! I want one!!!!! *_*
Yeah, I’d call this pretty clever. Not that hard to accomplish, practical, and even looks decent.
I would consider this a WIN!
Oly
No one seems to have noticed, it was cut down the middle, the left side was flipped.
I see the other side of the shelving against the walls on both “halves”. Leaves me to believe it’s two shelving units.
Noone seems to have noticed, because what you describe wasn’t there to be noticed, It’s just two units, sans back (so any light switches would still be accessible, unless blocked by the side panels or the stuff in the cupboard), and assembled interleavedly.
A Hooray for “interleavedly”
That’s F****** good work… damn… $ 143.50
I think I have to whole-heartedly disagree. This is not a goof. I think this is so cool! Pretty cheap and sorta tacky but still really cool!
And that’s a penny a curse! *whistle*
Dad will just take it out of junior’s college fund.
its not a penny a curse word it varies on the word used at least i remember the list on the fridge
damn/shit = penny
ass = 5 cents
f!&k/ C&*T = a quarter
See: “Hot Fuzz”
Ahh a corner of L-space!
DW reference for the win!! I may be a tiny bit in love with you. (c:
Although the shelves are adjustable, you’ll often find that the middle shelf in such a tall flat-pack bookcase is structural – you don’t get an option about where it goes. That’ll be why one of the bookcases is upside down.
Still looks awesome.
Your ideas are golden. Who would have thought of a blog like this?! The photos are way too funny!
Crazy people with nothing better to do. Welcome to the Brotherhood of Kludges!
I like it. Wouldn’t mind kitbashing one myself. I think I have this shelf(er, half of it), from IKEA.
I imagine they tried assembling the two sets of shelves, and found that they were a tadge too big for the space. After a bit of cussing, they sat down, had a beer (or two), then had the idea that it wouldn’t matter if the two shelves overlapped in the corner because it would be hard to get into that space anyway. So, turn one unit upside down, remove the side panel, insert the other shelve and reattach the side panel. Voila! Instant Escher shelves. Have another couple of beers to celebrate!
One thing for sure: it’s a conversation piece.
Perfect! This is just what I thought I would like to have in my room, and now I see this would be very convenient. Hail to the fixer who constructed it.
It’s like the Siamese twins of DIY shelving. Good hack though.
and the problem with this is?
I think this is the cleverest board of comments I have come across. Well done, everyone.
This looks like some kind of geometric paradox.
I have the perfect corner for this fine piece of home engering.
Is it just my eyes with the design or do they get wider as they go up?
I thought so to, but it’s an optical illusion. Look to the extreme left of the photo & you’ll see the door way. Follow an imaginary line up & you can tell that it’s actually straight.
Wide-angle lenses distort like that.
I was a Damn good cabinet builder and I don’t see how they did it.
There’s another quarter for the jar… pay up.
Simple. Take two DIY open cupboard kits, the ones that basically consist of two uprights and a number of shelves in that white plastic coated chipboard, and a bit of upmarket cardboard for the back. Assemble one, but leave off the back. For the other, fix the shelves to one of the uprights, then lay it sideways on the floor so that the shelves point up like the teeth of a rake in a cartoon. Take the other shelf and lower it over the one on the floor so that it’s flat on its back, upside down respective to the other one, and with the upward-pointing shelves essentially sticking through the back and through the spaces between the shelves of the one laying flat. Fix the other upright to the shelves. Invite your neighbors and try to get the Siamese Shelves upright without ripping them apart or knocking more holes in the ceiling for Ceiling Cat to peek through and watch you masturbate (at other times, unless your neighbors consent to doing it there and then).
That’s unnecessarily complicated. Try this instead:
Assemble first unit. Unfold 4th and 5th dimension. Assemble second unit. Collapse 3rd dimension. Push first unit into second unit. Fold back 4th and 5th. Restore 3rd. Done. Keep the change.
@Daniel: I don’t seem to have a dimension-expander/collapser tool on my Leatherman, hence the conventional method.
I like it. In fact, I was going to do this myself once, but I shelved the project.
Takes up the space of two bookcases and provides the storage of one!
You say that like it’s a bad thing
“After Assembling This, Dad Owes The Curse Jar….$143.25.”
that was one of the funniest things i have read in a long time.
That’s totally awesome. Fixed the expensive corner storage space furniture problem ideally!
As a developer, I’m not at all surprised to see programming books on those bookshelves.
This is very good, until you need to rearrange the room again.
Do that three times and ‘dad’ will have saved up enough for two weeks of skiing in Aspen.
Where can i buy that one????
On Hogwarts’ janitor rooms the bookshelves move along the walls.
My word… that’s godly.
My dear sweet mother had enough trouble putting together a couple of standard, non-interleaved ikea bookshelves. This top notch, escher-like use of space (we’ve got two in a corner and just lose the area where they butt together) would probably blow her mind trying to assemble.
I think we should give it a go though.
I agree, this is not a kludge. This is actually reasonable – if against all better judgment.
Misusing of “merge” word.
Its 2 identical bookshelves. One is upside down. They have been assembled interwoven.
More amazing is that the entire thing was whittled out of a single piece of wood. You can find them in our gift shop along with the twited nail puzzles.
And with a chainsaw & nail file as the only tools!
Something tells me this guy works a lot with cards. Maybe a dealer in Vegas?
A cramped space win!
Dude, what are you talking about, that is genius! Love it.
I think they misinterpreted the arrow for turning the page in the instructions booklet!
Only 143.25? I’d make that in the first 20 mins…
Im having that. I have a gap that will work great with that.
That… is actually pretty kickass. I am going to buy some WalMart bookshelves and see if I can accomplish this.
I love it and I want one!
Wow, that’s actually really clever! It avoids the inaccessible-end-of-shelf you’d normally get putting two shelves in a corner.
Pretty clever, actually.
Lol.. an oldskool gamezone magazine map!
Wow… I actually kind of like that.
Wow! I am just a total fan of this bookshelf! Real student ingenuity is right there!
is it wrong to have not only seen this, but to also have done this with bookcases before…
It is not wrong, but there is a 12 step program for that.
he took you literally when asked him to put your f8cking shelves together
I kind of like it, especially if the apartment is only slightly larger!
I think this was a good idea.
Not crazy about the staggered shelves (and the tiny spaces back in the corner) but someone was creative enough to “fix” the problem they had.
Something about making lemonade…
A page from the Ikea Kama Sutra!
heh, thats actualy pretty cool
