  1. K says:

I’m sure if I should expect better from a locksmith, or nothing less?

  2. Paddy says:

CALL THE LOCKSMITH! CALL THE LOCKSMITH! Call the locksmith! call the locksmith…!

  3. fluffy8u says:

Well, you know what they say, “the shoe maker’s children always go barefoot.” Except.. I guess in this case it would be “The locksmith’s van always goes without locks.”

  4. fluffy8u says:

You know… that really is poor advertising.

  5. Chris says:

Oh boy, a kludge from my hometown, how charming.

The real problem is that it is a bike lock, and not a car lock. What were they thinking?!?

    • Liz says:

I was thinking the same thing. Then again, seeing how the address is on San Pablo, they may need the bike lock for “EXTRA” protection. lol.

  6. LVP says:

This is called marketing. Don’t you know nothing about marketing?

  7. Daniel says:

    The Key Shack
    LOCKSMITH
    Auto – Home – Business
    One Size Fits All

  8. adfogg says:

Why blur out the phone number and the license number and leave the name of the business un-blurred?

    • Daniel says:

There must be a “Key Shack Locksmith” in every town east of Hawaii. Hardly identifying. Plus, I guess what they want to avoid are the idle prank callers which are lazy enough to be dissuaded with just this.

    • Smug Sapien says:

You could put a piece of duct tape on your monitor to cover it up……..then take a picture of it, and post it here. :D

  9. waldo says:

I hope he didn’t lose the key for the driver’s side. If he did, I hope the remote works.

  10. keeps him in practice picking that lock every time he needs to drive!

  11. dono1 says:

I hope Key Shack remembers to return Tiny Tim’s crutch before Christmas.

  12. littleblack says:

Is that duct tape I see wrapped around the lock? XD

  13. Truthiness says:

Finally! A locksmith who stands by his product!

  14. mystic_eye_cda says:

What a bike lock is a lock ;-) So it has a working lock, and he’s a lock smith.

Now if this were an auto mechanics van that’d be shameful!

  15. Mike says:

He could still unlock it from the inside: it’s a technique called “rolling down the window”.

  16. Jon says:

Nice, it now requires bypassing two locks to get into the van. Given that the tools inside are rather expensive (thousands of dollars, if well-equipped) and they can cause a lot of trouble in the wrong hands, it’s not a bad idea. Car door locks are not always as secure as you might like them to be, but tubulars are a PITFA to pick.

  17. The Cat says:

How hard would it be to remove one of the door handles?

  18. Mike Thorn says:

I wonder if this is just to keep the sliding door shut, rather than securely locked? It looks like the door is slightly open, leading me to think that the latch is broken, not the lock. Business must be slow.

  19. epic fail says:

I could tear them off in five mins. tops, using the bike lock on there for leverage.

  20. Gary says:

Actually a win. The long it takes to open the door the more likely the chance of being caught.

  21. paulc says:

What we have here is a locksmith who knows just how insecure car locks really are…

  22. MystykFyre says:

Great. One accident, the car catches fire, and bye-bye locksmith – there’s no way to get out quickly!

  23. Caio says:

recently refurbished and not with extra storage place…it’s a bargain!

  25. Gargomon says:

See, the accepted cards list on the window was meant to be on the other side.
Those are the only types of cards that’ll get the door open by sliding it to unlatch the lock.

  26. Jim Walk says:

Clever idea for extra security, if you ever lived in Chicago you know every extra bit helps. I doubt if he drives with it locked, at least not on his side.

  27. zero says:

I must say, to rain on the parade, the problem is probably not with the original lock, the problem is likely the van having a broken latch. Notice how the sliding door isn’t all the way closed? If that’s the case, this would be a highly effective temporary fix to keep your door from flying open. More elegant than baling wire til you can get it to the mechanic’s shop.

  28. no comment. says:

They even remembered to duck tape something! :,-) *sniff*

  29. scott says:

Funny, That would work way better then any car lock for keeping the sliding door closed and his tools in. It shows he knows his business.
    Good Job!

  30. KitFox says:

As any good locksmith will know, it only takes about 15 seconds to pick the doorlock on that van.
Picking that bike lock is a *lot* more difficult.

  31. teebo says:

I hope that’s not the bike lock that has been known to be easily picked with a Bic pen.

  32. uncchris says:

Frankly, that seems to be a fairly poor example of a bicycle rack kluge. Sure, you can get the first one on there, but there’s no room for a second one!

  33. Eric says:

I didn’t know Mr. Bean was a locksmith!

  34. Steini says:

This is quite neat. Makes it harder to break into his car. They being locksmiths know how easy it is to break into cars.

  35. Radwaste says:

That IS the Kryptonite lock recalled for being defeated by a Bic pen barrel pushed into the tumbler. I had stuff stolen; the thieves left the lock.

  36. Ruanne says:

    Physician, heal thyself.

  37. Donald Zerli, Patriot says:

No, there’s no tube lock on the drivers side. I found the locksmith’s address on Google Earth, looked at it on streetview, and got a clear view of one of their vans (very possibly the same one)from the driver’s side. No tube lock on the drivers side, and no way to attach one as only the passenger’s side has a sliding door.

  38. Ben says:

As a forced elective in college, I took “Sociology” and this is one thing that got the prof’s goat:

A locksmith lost his truck full of tools because he left it running and unlocked outside the gas station. He was like “Why did this man feel his services were required? Now we have, at least, one thief with a set of proper tools running around town…”

  39. I thin it’s an extra layer of security to prevent the side door from being bumped
