Favorite Comment: Fixer Todd says, “I know what you’re thinking…but the step-up curtain design isn’t just for the roof, it’s for the giant that lives with his dwarf (as in mythical dwarf, not pc-hot-button-dwarf) wife, and they both just happen to still enjoy a nice shower together.
And their carpenter sucks.”

» 54 Kludgers Kludging

  1. RickeyG says:

This kind of improvisation reaches a new plateau, as seen on the right.

  2. Mike says:

This is a clever solution to a problem that should never have existed.

  3. jeeves says:

Damn, I bet when you’re opening/closing the curtain none of the rings may touch the bar or suddenly a buzzer goes off and a man will come into the room and say “Aah too bad let’s see what you would’ve won if you done it right” and then all this people would come in there and do wavy hand movements in front of prices you didn’t win.

also that is a nice bevel in the corner where the wall an roof meet.

  4. TheAntiCat says:

Well done kludge. 10 out of 10.

  5. Todd says:

I know what you’re thinking…but the step-up curtain design isn’t just for the roof, it’s for the giant that lives with his dwarf (as in mythical dwarf, not pc-hot-button-dwarf) wife, and they both just happen to still enjoy a nice shower together.
    And their carpenter sucks.

  6. waldo says:

His and her shower stall, hoe quaint.

  7. Foamer says:

I wonder how low the ceiling actually is at the far end of the stall from the nozzle?

  8. Brad Gilbert says:

That is from an episode of “Ask This Old House”

  9. Sonic_Euphoria says:

My screen must be terrible, I can totally see aliasing in the shower rod.

  10. rdm says:

Well, I’m totally, I’ve got very like this in MY bathroom and what’s the big deal, I should have the roof leveled out? I ain’t mada money. Let’s hear a better idea

  11. Paddy says:

It’s really a monocular shower, to make people of the same size, look way taller/smaller than life to the naked eye.

  12. pirateguillermo says:

I’m with Mike, I think this is great.

  13. Diane says:

I think this is a very good idea for this sloped ceiling.

  14. Davethelandpirate says:

Please remember to wipe your feet on the “L” shaped bathmat…

  15. kateohkatie says:

I think it’s quite clever, actually. Would be interested to see what the bottom edge looks like, though…did they actually cut into the curtain at the top and make new holes for the lower section? Or is the whole thing hanging crooked at the bottom? I hope it’s the former…

    • Stefan says:

It looks like there are two curtain pieces, taped together in the middle. The left piece was probably trimmed at the bottom.

  16. matthew says:

Looks better than my mold/hairy shower curtain.

  17. Garradha says:

Yeah, I’m with TheAntiCat — 10 out of 10. This is win.

  18. Demetrius says:

The alternative would be to cut the top of the curtain at an angle and attach it to hooks in the ceiling. At least *this* way you can open either side.

    • Paddy says:

But then you’d have to anchor it at the high end, or we’d all have a room with a view!

    • Stefan says:

I wouldn’t want them taped together in the middle though, I would’ve prefered having the two overlap some there, and then use the middle for opening it.

  19. Daniel says:

    Zhower!

  20. Faith says:

    Agreed. This is a win.

  21. Synnamin says:

    That’s rather clever! nicely done.

  22. tye says:

    I get the front. :)

  23. François says:

Did he at least use zip ties?

  24. Pookie says:

hey, when you are forced to live in the attic, you do what you gotta do.

  25. Grani says:

I agree with those that think it was a good idea. Not a better solution given by anyone. I doubt there would be one. I also agree with those that think the contractor’s skills are somewhat lacking.

  26. Don Conway says:

This is actually pretty clever :) I give it my approval :D

  27. Daniel says:

I like it! The only problem could be opening the curtain. With the top corner attached to the ceiling, the curtain can only open toward the middle, which is still adequate.

  28. Shimmer says:

That would still work if it wasn’t attached up there…

    • Gargomon says:

“That would still work if it wasn’t attached up there…”

The rod couldn’t get italics to work either..

  29. Shimmer says:

    Gah, damn lack of italics!

  30. jimpem says:

Some kludges are great ideas. This is one of them.

The pvc shower rod is not unlike what’s at my mother-in-law’s bed. She and my father-in-law have a bedroom there just off their kitchen area, but sometimes she likes to sleep elsewhere when his snoring gets too loud. So she has her own bed area at the far end of the kitchen complete with a pvc pipe curtain rod that she pulls shut for privacy. It’s even dog-legged to fit to an uneven place where the basement ceiling covers some ductwork.

  31. Cayenne says:

    10 of 10!
And a 10 for thinking to take a picture.

  32. Jade says:

Awesome idea here. 10 of 10!

Also, rather than blaming the contractor, I think this is an added on bathroom, if you look at the corner above the shower head it looks recently sealed up. I think someone wanted another bathroom in their house and probably had limited space to work with and/or also needed space that already had plumbing inside the wall.

  33. Daniel says:

Think of it this way, if you had sliding doors, they only open halfways which is what you got here.

  34. Macronomicon says:

Non-Euclidean architecture? THIS IS CTHULHU’S SHOWER!

    • Daniel says:

Just letting you know that “non-euclidean architecture” is now part of my lexicon. Good luck collecting royalties, though.

  35. K says:

Fail. A true kludger would have found a way to alter the showerhead in such a way that it doesn’t require a curtain at all.

  36. Chiel says:

I bet they use duct tape to tape the rings to the vertical sides

  37. Kash says:

    Actually, this IS Euclidean.

  38. Perry says:

In it’s own way, it’s genius.

  39. one small step says:

The apartment where I live now has a shower exactly like this! If only my landlord would do the same thing! He chose to make the shower rod curve half way down the tub, and we don’t even get the benefit of taking a bath because he won’t install a faucet, just the shower head. We ended up just cutting off the bottom of a regular plastic shower curtain liner because a full sized shower curtain won’t fit. It’s too long. Excellent solution though. I love it!

  40. lily says:

I think this is brilliant. Makes perfect sense to me!

  41. stomply says:

Oh, come on. They should’ve just made the curtain rod follow the countour of the stairs, cut the curtain on the bias, and attach suction cups to the “uphill” end of the curtain.

But with that kind of design forethought they probably would’ve also thought to cover the underside of the staircase with tile or something else waterproof.

  42. an elite says:

    Someone, get the unangling cream!

  43. Yet Another Steve says:

This matches the L-shaped sheet on the bed — you know, like people always have in movies; it covers her up to her neck but him only up to his waist.

  45. Bug says:

You -never- change snake like this. Diagonal lines totally ruin the classic gameplay.
