It was made by my youngest sibling, he took the stairs too fast in a moment of boyish exuberance and left a dent on the wall of the landing. After he took his own life, somehow removing that reminder of a day when he was happier and so full of life seemed more difficult than a simple “fix that dented wall.”

‘Jury rigged’ is a nautical term (the jury rig being a temporary or makeshift mast for when the main one is damaged) and has nothing to do with a jury in the legal sense. ‘Jerry rigged’ has no historical basis but is believed to have come from a combination of ‘jury rigged’ and ‘jerry built’, the last of which is also an older term having nothing to do with German soldiers.

The two are often used interchangably but I think technically ‘jerry built’ should only be used for new constructions that are unsound rather than temporary or haphazard fixes to existing ones.

I’m pretty sure they did a vote here to settle that very issue. Some people say jerry, some jury. It’s a regional thing. Like kitty-corner vs catty-corner (or diagonal, if you wanna be a stickler about it)
