Notice that that there is actually electricity running to this place (far left side). I think that puts it distinctly above “Third World Shanty” status.

That is surprising. One would assume they run the 54″ plasma off a jury-rigged car battery or sump-thin
@dono1 – I am hearing the theme from The Beverly Hillbillies…..the part BEFORE Jed was shootin at some food and up from the ground came a bubblin crude.
“Been in the family six generations…”
Yup, first Cleetus married Darlene, then they had two kids, and those two kids got together and had two kids… and there hasn’t been any new DNa introduced during the whole process!
in Argentina we have entire neighborhoods of those… it’s weird how in other countries this way of living turns out to be funny
anyway, this is a really cool blog
Seriously though, it probably belongs to some family who worked their whole lives in the black, desolate, death traps of the Appalachian’s coal mines. Till they shut down and there is no other industry, or ways to make a living. No need to worry as most of them have already died of black lung and other varieties of cancer. Widowed women catch possums and river rats to provide a hot meal for their children, and because of the amount of “unearned” income they get from their late husband’s measly pension fund, they do not qualify for foodstamps.
Not a bad idea, actually… Those “Working Poor” and those on the “Credit/Arrest/etc.” blacklist who are homeless could do this- Pitch in and BUY a plot of land, (too expensive inside cities, but on the outskirts…) then construct a shack out of tents, scraps, etc. Owning the plot of land, it’s nigh-impossible to evict them, and any assault on the “Commune” becomes a liability nightmare “Human Rights violation”…
Haha, my grandparents had a building that looked almost exactly like this right behind their house. I do believe at one point people were living in it (they had 18 kids no joke). Grass grew up through the floor on the inside.
When they had both passed, we had to have it bulldozed and cleared so we could sell their house!
Jeezus, If you looked up “ramshackle” in the dictionary, it would have this picture. It look like scrap forts I build when I was a kid, only . . . bigger, and with electricity.
“Charming, rustic 2 bedroom. Cozy with great rural accents. Large great room with dirt-like floor (green friendly!). Airy bathroom with Southeast ‘Outhouse’ inspired design. Skylights and windows at will.
Great for someone who wants to ‘get away from it all’ or something specific. Great for militias, too.”
First!
Shoot – that’s a condo! What’s it doing here?
I saw that one somewhere… Can anybody tell me where?
Was it on “Lifestyles are the Rich & Reclusive? You should see the inside….

meh. I have visited (and eaten) in places a lot worse than that. Watched satellite TV too.
I think I’m to those people.
@Princess Buttercup
related, related to,, grrrr
Looks like a Fallout 3 screenshot.
In the family for 6 generations… but that’s only 78 years ’round these parts.
Shucks, that’s my next-door neighbor’s place.
that’s not really surprising, about a third of the world’s population live like that e.g shantytowns, refugee camps etc
sad but true
Notice that that there is actually electricity running to this place (far left side). I think that puts it distinctly above “Third World Shanty” status.
And they said Timmy would never be able to afford a house. Looks who’s Laughing now!
Pretty impressive collection of scraps. I wonder what the tax assessment is on this place.
Aluminum siding, wood, gypsum board, corrugated steel, lattice, PVC pipe, plastic sheeting… are you sure this isn’t a store display at Home Depot?
I think I even see a few velvet paintings of Elvis on the top left side…
What do you suppose is the average R value here?

@Badgirl
Nice. Cause of all the things this place lacks, you just know that somehow a badass TV isn’t one of them…
Ah, Hawaii.. my neighbor’s house looked exactly like this.
And their car is rolling on 24′s.
How do you think they afford the TV?
Really it looks like someone made a shelter out of a garbage dump. Which is kinda sad when you consider a lot of people in the world live like that.
It varies with the price of aluminum, steel, metal sheet, plywood, uranium, empty old drum, and duct tape!@Derelict
It’s probably around 5 +/- 10 so often colder inside in winter than outside!
Not sure which song title goes best with this pic- “Gimme Shelter” or “Blowin’ in the Wind”?
District 9.5!
I bet it’s loaded on the inside…anyone seen “Harold and Kumar Go to Guantanamo Bay”?
@dono1
certainly not Love Shack!!!
Is that supposed to be a house?
This is less of a “fixer-upper” and more of a “knocker-downer”.
So, let me guess, as soon as it starts raining, the whole “house” becomes a shower, right?
@dono1 – I am hearing the theme from The Beverly Hillbillies…..the part BEFORE Jed was shootin at some food and up from the ground came a bubblin crude.
@Badgirl
This may not be bubblin but it’s definitely crude.
Finally…a house we can afford!

@NickH
I think I see a pile of DNA over on the right there.
Home sweet no rent, no mortgage home.
Is it a bunch of trailer homes that have imploded? Thankfully there wasn’t more, otherwise there’d be a black hole instead.
I’ve seen kids’ forts that came out better.
LOL…nice one.
Hey now! One more payment and it’s theirs!
All thats missing is the random appliances strewn across the yard and a Camaro on blocks!
in Argentina we have entire neighborhoods of those… it’s weird how in other countries this way of living turns out to be funny

and not a penny has been put into it since!

My other home is a Frank Lloyd Wright!
Unfortunately folks live like this in the USA – it ain’t funny. And the system is such that they can’t escape the poverty. But we laugh…
One day my son, this will all be yours.
Reminds me of the “Split Level House” from LIFE.
My 1971 trailer house is $26 for taxes…no joke.
By any chance was this picture taken outside of an elementary school in south carolina?
Anyone have this guys number …? I need an addition built on to my cardboard box.
…and this is the master bedroom on the left…
Extreme Recycling: Home Edition
Looks like my neigbors house…except much nicer!

Whoa! Is that Bob Ewell’s house?
been in the family for 6 generations..people passing by thought it was a landfill for 5
redneck camper, take it down and put it up when you get there.
around here this is what we would call a meth lab

and it still has that leak.
The title was a typo. This house was in the family for *sixty* generations.
some of it
I think
this is the kind of houses you would live in if the power grid gets destroyed by a EMP
