» 39 Kludgers Kludging

  1. Fashoom says:

Well sure it’s bulkier than an iPod Touch, but for the money it’s a fine and dandy portable DVD player.

  2. Daniel says:

This is probably my favorite fix of all time. Why actually fix something when you can just make the job of forcing it easier?

  3. Derelict says:

Not shown–the 1500-lb hydraulic jack used to close the drawer.

But I guess this repair is all the owner could, uh, handle.

  4. Double AA says:

The actual repair is probably easier than their fix. My 360 wasn’t opening or closing, turned out it was just a dusty belt. A q-tip and some water and I was good to go.

  5. Vexarr says:

I’m doing this to all my DVD drives RIGHT NOW.

  6. Adam Drew says:

This is a pretty common fix on older-model Xbox360s, too. The tray in mine just suddenly stopped opening one day, and a quick search for “jammed xbox tray” revealed a variety of drilled-out disc trays with makeshift pull-handles in them.

  7. AlanV says:

LOL! thats a good exemple of a DVD-case

  8. Just_Gerald says:

He probably did it with MIGHTY PUTTY!!

  9. Mike says:

Reminds me of the days when your car stereo had a handle on it for easy removal. Maybe new minivans can have this option for their dvd players!

  10. Rick S says:

    I love that movie!

  11. Josh says:

Brought to you by MIGHTY PUTTY!

  12. JBD says:

A dual purpose handle! Portability and DVD extraction tool! Brilliant!

  13. The Cat says:

Genius. I have a “works fine as long as you don’t stick your finger in there” DVD player myself.

  14. Unpro says:

no, this is not a problem of of dusty belt. There’s an el-cheapo plastic ‘rail’ underneath the DVD tray that will always break.

then again, a smaller love handle would had suffice to nudge it out.

  15. Paddy says:

HA! That’s not a DVD player! it’s their top secret brief case, cleverly disguised as said DVD player!

  16. Piston says:

Because it’s worth it to get that movie back, dammit.

(bluray players are worse for that though, oh my lord.)

  17. Clare says:

Not only can you open and close at your leisure (without having to rely on the recalcitrant mind of a dvd player), it’s now so much easier to control the way you smash it against the wall when it doesn’t work.

  18. Claudio says:

    …..o pior é mala sem alça….

  19. bodger says:

My CD player has almost exactly the same kludge… the eject mechanism failed after 10 years of use, but with a drawer handle added it’s as good as new (well, almost ;) )

  20. Pat says:

    @ Vexarr Brilliant

  21. Rampart says:

“Oh, it works great, but the bolts on the back-side of the handle keep scratching all my DVDs.”

  22. FixMaster 2k says:

    @bodger
I would say it is better than new, because now it has “style!!”

  23. HellHathNoFury says:

…except now it looks strangely satisfied that it is eating your Labyrinth DVD

  24. Erik says:

I just love this fix. my dads cd player has the fun problem that when u press the eject button it goes all the way out and then back in at once.. gotta be quick to change cd.

  25. dono1 says:

Well, Labyrinth *is* a pretty gripping movie.

I have an eMac with a similar problem. I don’t know or care if its just the dumbass operating system not responding to the button on the keyboard, but there is no emergency force it open button (or hole to stick “mac key” aka “end of a paper clip”) and its not worth replacing!

I should just mighty putty a handle on it.
no, this is not a problem of of dusty belt. There’s an el-cheapo plastic ‘rail’ underneath the DVD tray that will always break.

  27. Does this happen to everyone? Seriously, I’ve lost 2 Labyrinth DVDs to unruly players!

  28. D. says:

This sure beats the Screwdriver-pry bar approach.

  29. My DVD also wants such a device ;-)

  30. Marius says:

    It’s brilliant!
I believe almost al my dvd players get the problem sooner or later. (not open anymore). Usualy, I destroy them. But this I will try next time! (well, maybe a bit smaller handle)

  31. rattler says:

but can you grill a cheese sandwich in there.

    looks like its smiling…

  32. Riles says:

    @Jenny_the_Wicked
Thank you for that post. By the way, my mother owns Short Circuit on DVD. I just want everyone to know that.

  33. Sam says:

The amusing thing is, my DVD player once did eat my Labryinth DVD. I got it back, and it works perfectly, but this makes me laugh.

  34. Alice says:

But the handle dosen’t march those of the cabinet below. Come on, put some real effort into it!

  35. JCUBE says:

This is actually brilliant my kids try to get crap stuck in the DVD player all the time for those times they figure out a peice of cheese actually fits perfectly in the dvd player this would be AWESOME! loves it.

  36. SimplyFan says:

    Well, this is one thing Sarah probably wouldn’t mind losing in the Labyrinth. ;}

  37. the prices of Pioneer dvd players are dropping these days and they are quite a bargain,:”

  38. Etyueidn says:
