You mean that isn’t an acceptable way to stiffen up the suspension of car? Then I really need to go and re-configure my track car’s suspension. I mean new springs were way to expensive, a can of tennis balls was only a couple dollars.
It looks to me like the tennis balls were added to serve as bumpstops, to prevent the suspension from bottoming out. It’s fairly common to glue hockey pucks inside the coil spring on lifted Jeep Cherokees to prevent larger tires from “eating” the fenders. My Jeep needed 2 hockey pucks per side. But tossing a bunch of tennis balls in there sounds like a really bad idea.
Back in the 70′s I helped coach a HS Gymnastics team. In a similar way, we tried packing tennis balls the metal coil springs of our vaulting springboard to tighten the action. While it worked pretty well with 100 lb high school girls, I would be surprised if the technique made much difference at all on this beater.
We had a couple of the better vaulters in the area, so the technique attracted a great deal of interest from athletes and coaches from other teams. However, our girls didn’t like the action much and wanted the balls removed. Instead, we left them in but drilled holes in the balls to negate their effect. By the State meet, nearly half of the other teams had tennis balls in their springboards.
Actually – that is a serious mod for Lada Niva’s — wonderful Russian 4wd’s that they are…. makes the suspension better – and I spoke to someone who owned one and did this.
No idea if this pic is of a Niva though. But does stiffen up a shagged coil in a small vehicle.
he thought there was a racket coming from the back then discovered the fault. When tried in court, he blamed the service. Fortunately, a good lawyer ensured his advantage so he got the break.

Are you guys freakin serious with all this “it’s a great mod & it actually works” statements.. Listen to how dumb you sound, your talking about tennis balls being used as shock replacements. You gotta be either dirt poor or a redneck, I’m sorry but that’s just being obsurd.
tie break!
man, why you gotta talk about Engine Joe like that?
“See, my car has BALLS!”

You’d think super bouncy balls would be more effective.
That’s just awesome.
Now THERE’S a car with BALLS!
Even better? Handballs. Solid rubber = firmer ride.
Racket balls FTW
….como bolinha de tenis é um bom amortecedor!
Oh my! Is this supposed to fix a broken something or is it just to stiffen the ride?
You all missed the point… It’s a tennis-ball-catcher car!
how do you wedge them in there in the first place?
O_o
Wow. Just… wow.
An ideal gas scaled up from the quantum level, maybe?
I thought they were lemons at first glance, and thought “man, I would not accept a glass of lemonade from that person.”
More suspense than the US Open.

More suspension you mean?
Fiat…fix it again tony
or until he gets it right
@Erm
is it in the car-nonical ensemble?
Wow, that guy really got served!
If you’ll notice, this isn’t to stiffen the suspension. There’s no shock absorber in that spring. The tennis balls are a shock absorber replacement.
@Bildo
Not all suspension setups have the shock inside the spring
urcar can bounce……
Actually, this is a somewhat common practice. You squeeze the tennis balls in there, and they do in fact keep the suspension from bottoming out.
They wear out (and fall out) eventually, but them you just put more in.
I don’t know about 5-6, but I know I’ve used 3-4 before.
haha, i would have put my balls in those 100lb vaulter girls, screw the platform
@mxman
Lol, that was so classy it hurt.
Does this guy read this page, or is it a growing trend?

That is so hillbilly, but I bet it actually works. You lift up the car, the coils spread, you put the balls in, and let the car down. I love it!
Oh,it is spring? I thought it was a ball joint.
Is this what they call ‘hydro-pneumatic suspension’?
Well, the Citroën’s hydropneumatic suspension usually has green spheres…

PS …and it is superior to any other kind of suspension
I thought this was the solution, not the problem!

Hands down best comment.
Actually this is a legitimate mod.
Its done all the time in the australian outback to temporarily improve the ride. Works a treat mate.
one nasty hiding place and one big tennis-playing squirrel

This person’s mechanic is really running a racquet…
