Has anyone else noticed that the supports on the right are not level?
How the hell do you get up there, anyway?
I love that he has taken out the ceiling tile right above his head
The CEO of Zappos is in the top bunk. It looks like they did this in a lobby rather than in office space or a cube farm. Probably so they could draw attention to the logo on the wall.
This isn’t a fix, it is a publicity stunt for April fools day. The bottom guy’s screens aren’t on. They either spent far more time on cable management than on the rest of the kludge, or the end of the cables are just tucked behind a convenient bag or wastebasket.
I guess the gag is good enough to earn some free advertising.
Good construction; the diagonal braces and horizontals around the base mean it’s not at all rickety. The top horizontals are wider than the posts, probably two-by-sixes. Surface is at least half, maybe quarter-inch plywood. Quite safe to use. I’d have (over)built it a bit differently: four-by-four posts on the inside of the horizontals, one-inch plywood surface. 6-8 inches shorter, with at least two inches of foam underneath. Add some rails to make climbing easier. And bolt down the desk and chair; if they can move, there’s an inevitable accident in the near future.
This Photo is sadly fake, where do the cables from his computer go? they aren’t plugged in anywhere :p.
The dark contrast on the upper person are more greenish than the rest of the photo. The is a big lamp behind the upper person and yet it doesnt cast any light on the person. The wall is more close upon the upper person if you judge from his shadow :p
@TBSWoody, A wheelie chair on top would be a recipe for severe blunt force trama to the head, when he forgets he is 7 feet in the air and pushes away from his desk. Especially without any hand rails. Where is OSHA when you need them.
I am going to have to agree with Boring Troll, this is a publicity stunt.
The camera is level with the platform. I assume that the professional photographer is on the ladder. As soon as the photoshoot was completed, they probably moved the ladder back to the platform. The CEO came down.
The staff came up and took down the props. The platform was then brought out through the doors.
Note how the 2×6 at the top front is mounted behind the vertical 4×4 posts. That makes the platform 2 inches narrower. Usually they try to maximize the size of a platform up to the width of a sheet of plywood. I am assuming the platform is sized so it will fit through the doors, or perhaps fit in the back of a truck.
This implies that the platform was built somewhere else. And it will go back out to become part of a child’s play structure, or the carpenter will just use the pieces for the next job.
Is this a loft office? With no comments to guide me I am not even sure what it is. Wait I get it, bunk desks.
Women wearing short skirts work on the top level. Company policy. Sorry.
Now they are saving floor space! Its so valuable these days!
Hey, can we trade chairs?
One way to move up within a company!
How considerate, they took a tile out of the ceiling so he wouldn’t bump his head on it.
Guess that would keep you from falling asleep at your desk!
Extra points for having to take out the ceiling tile for head space.
1. Tape picture of premeditated kluge
2. Get it on failblog or thereifixed it
3. Profit!
i’d REALLY love an explanation for this!
I love Zappos
This is from their April 1st blog:
http://blogs.zappos.com/blogs/inside-zappos/2009/04/01/bunkdesks
The guy at the bottom has a full 16 inches of headroom. …must me management!
Has anyone else noticed that the supports on the right are not level?

The thing most prone to failing there is for sure the Avaya phone!
So, what does it take to move up in this company?
Can I get this at IKEA?
Right now I’m thinking I’ll never buy shoes from them again!
The secret to Zappos success? Low overhead.
Bunk cubicles?
WIN! @dono1
@S.
S., I’m not sure that the ceiling tile would be *above* his head if in place, I think its removal is making space for his head.
Yay! Always consider that you are not onto the floor of ordinary things! Else might fall down!1!111
BTW, are the two of them talking over IM? Or just shouting up and down?
Now thats unfair the guy on top should have a weelie chair aswell:P
the upper guy is clearly the bottom guy’s superior because now he can REALLY dump a job on the other!
Rising on bill ladder take word by word.
In ma compagny, I work under my boss, yeah, my too.

@BoringTroll:
Thanks mr. buzzkill
How does he get up?
@dono1
groan
@BoringTroll
And… They might have gotten away with it, except it doesn’t make me curious enough to find out what kind of snack crackers Zappos *are*.
That sucks!

and then he needed to pee
The missing ceiling tile isn’t for head space, its the route he takes to get to his desk. I mean, do you see a ladder anywhere?

Now would that be a PO Box or a UP Box?
@Gideon
What do you think that yellow bucket is for?
When they mentioned a raise, I knew I’d be moving up in the company–just not like this.
I sure hope they get workman’s comp at Zappos.
Needs a rope and bucket to lift up files and supplies.

Right… So not only did I have the wobbly chair and the wobbly table, now I have the wobbly floor as well!
@BoringTroll
yeah, but you caould climb that. i mean what is it like, 5-6 feet?
People who watch “The Office” would understand this.
it needs a slide
….eu diria extremamente funcional….
Bem prático
Everytime I watch a rerun of Hollywood Squares, I’ve wondered when offices would build cubicles like that. It’s only a matter of time people!
Good thing to see there’s no glass ceiling at this business.
Incentive not to fall asleep on the job?
Uh, when you get up, watch that first step… it’s a lulu…
That’s a lawsuit waiting to happen.
Dear God, when you talk to these guy on the phine, they sound sooooo together !

I call BOTTOM bunk, thank you very much…
How come the guy on the bottom has so much headroom and the guy up top has to hunch? Are thry trying to invoke workplace violence? j/k
“I Call Top!”
“Damnit Ted!”
The person with the most sales gets the better desk!!!
It was not a good day when Joe fell asleep at his desk.
