But does it still have the emergency evacuation chutes on the doors?
If it has to ditch at sea, how can you tell?
(Depending on proper execution and assembly, this might even rank as a Win, not just a Kludge. But I’d need to check it out first. The air-con system points to the latter, but.)
Huh, this could go either way I guess. On the one hand, great recycling and creativity, on the other hand, I’m not sure I like the way that air conditioner is positioned… it could tip the thing off balance!
Wow, somebody’s a huge Jimmy Buffet fan. That is an accurate build of the Cosmic Muffin out of his book “Where is Joe Merchant”. I believe the crack brain building it in the book is trying to build a space ship…

Buffet was actually inspired by this boat/plane to include that reference in his book.
@Seth
I found and read all that. The plane on top is historic, no question about that. The hull on the bottom, however – FAIL. I would have expected an aluminum hull and all the parts mated by a TIG welder and/or custom bracketry – guess not.
Judging from the repair photos, it looks to be homebuilt with wood stringers around the bottom-side of the plane hull, and then strip planked with plywood and hand fiberglassed. Which would be okay IF there was a way to access it from the inside for inevitable structural repairs, but the plane hull is in the way.
Instead you find out it’s rotten after it holes and starts sinking…
There will only ever be one true Cosmic Muffin… Darrel Martinie, 1943 – 2006. Actually someone else thought up the name for him. It was originally from National Lampoon’s spoof on Desiderata in 1972. http://www.its.caltech.edu/~erich/misc/deteriorata
Oh LOSE. Wood & fibreglass stuck onto aluminum fuselage? That says kluge to me. Definitely going to show up on Craigs list in a couple of years to tow away free.

This is 1 of two existing Boeing B307 stratoliners. The other one is in the Smithsonian and was recovered after a post-restore crash into Puget Sound (out of gas…). It was a barn find.
“Dear, you missed it. This ‘Planeboatsoon’ just went by, named the Cosmic Muffin!” “That does it, honey. Tomorrow we’re signing you up for that twelve-step program…”
Not West Palm. Muffin has been docked in Fort Lauderdale just off Sunrise Blvd (behind and across from the Barnes&Noble bookstore near the Galleria Mall) for over a decade.

All you need is a wing and a prayer.
Captain Sully approves of this concept.
Wait, is that a window unit air conditioner sticking out the side?
Quick, someone get me a Red Bull!
Must be the Hudson River.
LOL yeah it does look like the Hudson. But it can’t be. The water isn’t quite brown enough, and there aren’t any dead things floating on the water.
@Bruce
That would be “win.”

The Cosmic Muffin is AWESOME!
I love it! It’s beautiful! I would love to cruise the local lakes in this thing.
More pictures…

Needs a deck up top. Where ya gonna catch some rays, or be an exhibitionist?

Now THAT is unspeakably cool!
Take me away again, to margaritaville.
Buffet was actually inspired by this boat/plane to include that reference in his book.
boat made out of an airplane, fah. make an airplane out of the Queen Mary, then I’ll be impressed.
Every one of those airplane drama movies from the 70s come flooding (pun intended) to mind when I look at this.

And not a single photo of the stern – THAT Ugly?
I believe the “Cosmic Muffin” existed before Jimmy Buffet’s book.

Or curb alert.
Cosmic Muffin has been previously featured on the Travel Channel. Recycling WIN.
I’m sick and tired of these motherloving PLANES on this motherloving BOAT!

First pressurized cabin.
Their Web site is constructed just about as well as the Muffin itself …
Love the caption.
This thing is in West Palm Beach. Jimmy Buffet named it.
They never thought they’d be on a boat. After all, it’s a big blue watery road.
I said “A Plain Boat”, not “A Plane Boat”!!!
Its a Pan-Am ‘Clipper’ gone wrong.
Reduce, reuse, recycle?
im thinking: 1 too many fat peoples on 1 side, that things gonna roll.
@Demetrius
No kidding, I can see why he wanted to put into into one of his books.
One more to the “no good reason, just because it could be done” list.
“Dear, you missed it. This ‘Planeboatsoon’ just went by, named the Cosmic Muffin!” “That does it, honey. Tomorrow we’re signing you up for that twelve-step program…”
actually saw the Cosmic Muffin on a TV show(weird homes). It’s actually pretty awesome inside.
at least the paint job matches.
@Powermuffin
Powermuffin, are you related to this?
jacque Cousteau would be proud to check how she handles in the turns..
I worked in Woods Holl at a nearby restaurant
@Clyde
hahaha good call clyde i was totally thinking the same damn thing about the hudson!! haha
This is actually a houseboat that you can rent and live in. Expensive stuff though.
http://unusuallife.com/2007/03/18/desdemonas-rocket-ship-the-cosmic-muffin/ Check it out.
OMG that is brilliant!
This is the plane that crashed in the hudson they figured they wouldput it to good use.
Gee, I bet this boat is easy to get on plane.
Not West Palm. Muffin has been docked in Fort Lauderdale just off Sunrise Blvd (behind and across from the Barnes&Noble bookstore near the Galleria Mall) for over a decade.
No doubt…
I would love to drive this past all the fancy yacht owners to piss them off.
This gives a whole new meaning to the word “hydroplane”.
This is not what you need then
flight 666 to air (water) traffic control: permission to dock.
This looks like it should’ve been on the dvd cover of Planes, Trains and Automobiles
why isn’t this plane taking off?
