Married an engineer. Dropped MacBook. Engineer removed broken screen. Hooked “Lap Butt” up to desktop flat panel monitor. Et voila, There, I fixed it! I wish I had a photo. It was quite embarrassing when I had to take the Lap Butt to the Apple Genius Bar for advice, but I think they kind of admired the ingenuity.
extra bonus points for putting what looks like a different model of screen on that laptop , they all seem to have custom controllers and timing specs which means its not just a case of plugging in it actually needs electronics work. shame its only to run windows though
Funny… The TFT monitor is smaller by 1 or 2 inches. The wireless antenna’s there too! That is probably not a portable computer anymore. No way you can run that through the TSA at an airport!
@Badgirl
Personal Pat-Downs would be a very good name for a band.
(PS- where’ve you been- vacation? Or have you been seeing another site behind our backs)
Well dono, I figure if my humor level ain’t runnin wit da big dogs, I’d just stay on the porch. Been watching from the back of the room.
Regarding other sites, I have been following you on thatwillbuffout.com. For any other members of the dono1 fan club check it out -dono has some very, very funny, clever, creative comments there.
This is a nice kludge. It’s not pretty, but there’s not a whole lot you can do to fix a laptop like that short of sending it in for re-casing (and a new screen?), which is generally rather expensive. The laptop pictured there is pretty huge; it’s more a desktop replacement type thing, so it’s not like the owner carried it around much anyway. Or maybe they did; that would explain the initial damage.
This is what I did to my Windows laptop when I finally came to the realization that it was never going to be right again (Oh, you know, they’re required to break the day after your “warranty” is up). Only difference is, mine didn’t really work anymore after I removed all the pieces.
I used to have a laptop just like this! My husband kludged it together for me. I lovingly named it Dr. Frankenstein, because I was in graduate school for English at the time. I miss good ol’ Frankie.
Buying a brand new replacement screen for a laptop usually ends up costing as much as the laptop itself, especially those 16″+ LCD screens. A reconditioned screen is a bit cheaper, though it might have some scratches on it.Kudos to this owner for being able to patch a different LCD to the laptop and get it to work.
Awesome. I have the same model of laptop, there is a known defect with the monitor casing breaking and coming apart. I stupidly shipped mine back to the manufacturer who fixed it free of charge. If only I had known this guy, I could have downgraded from the 17″ monitor to the 15″ one and not have to wait a week for it to come back!
@Ben Hall
Yeah, but very few screens are actually cross compatible like that, so I’m genuinely impressed at the kludge. I’ve got an old, well-loved 486 lappy with a busted screen in the back of the cupboard I’d like this g[uy|al] to have a go at…
@Sue
He’s just hankering back to the days of the Amiga / Apple II / insert-favourite-old-keyboardcomputer-here…
It’s pictures like these that make me wish I took pictures of when I had a door hinge and duck tape holding my laptop together. )= alas I got parts to properly fix it already.
Tiled background and a massed collection of icons, ewwwww.
windows is for ever!!!!!!!!!!
Abomineering at it’s finest.
That is quite the contraption!

@Sue
That makes perfect sense to me.
@Czernobog
Except for the part about marrying an engineer.
Wow, this is a high-end kludge. I don’t see any duct tape, and I rather doubt that tweak was involved. A real step up for TIFI.
That’s either a guy with disgusting, long, shiny fingernails… or a woman with disgusting, long arm hair. Either way, get a new arm, man/woman
This one’s actually kinda neat
@kevin
Either he’s a lefthanded guitarist, or it’s another epic kludge.
Make one from two, why not
What are you talking about? Salvage? This is a prototype for a new line of Terminator laptops to be co-marketed as Futuristic Post-Apocalyptic Tech.
Actually, I am kind of impressed on this one.
Coldplay ftw!

GJ, you can consider yourself a PC repair expert.
…or he’s lazy about cutting his nails. I know I’ve let my nails get like that sometimes out of laziness.
With the effeminate hand, the pink & white terry robe and the blue shoe in the background, this might be a scene from La Kludge aux Folles.
We need to start working on that screenplay.
Funny… The TFT monitor is smaller by 1 or 2 inches. The wireless antenna’s there too! That is probably not a portable computer anymore. No way you can run that through the TSA at an airport!
@JBD
Unless they have the screensaver:
http://www.thecleverest.com/countdown.swf
I have a feeling trying to get that machine through airport security might win you a visit to personal pat-down.
OMG He’s running Windows! That really is a Kludge.
Before anyone says it – JBD’s comment was not visible yet when I hit submit. I do read the thread first.
@Badgirl
You get a pass on that one. It falls within the grace period.
I would let Badgirl give me a personal pat-down.
All riiiiight
@Badgirl

I don’t know about you, but I’m impressed.
Salvaged? Yes. But that poor computer should have been put out of its misery long ago.

But hey. It’s still a PC. I’m a PC. You?
That is pure awesome.
@SFLegend
Tiled Coldplay background, at that! Double ewwwww!
DAMNIT!!! I JUST sent in a pic of my salvaged laptop! Rats!
Czerny- Let’s do it! (but you know, I always wanted to direct…)
I can’t see any duct tape.
Nah, dude, this is just the latest mod trend.
Is is Abomineering or just plain win?
now what he really needs to do is dalvage a bunch of these LCDs and build himself a tv wall

This person is the very definition of a screensaver.
I used to have a laptop just like this! My husband kludged it together for me. I lovingly named it Dr. Frankenstein, because I was in graduate school for English at the time. I miss good ol’ Frankie.
At least it still works. My laptop is fully intact, but the backlight, card reader, and half the ports don’t work.

Ahh, I’d expect nothing less from a HP DV9000, I’m suprised it worked properly when it was in one piece
@Sue
What I intend to do with a broken-screen laptop sitting in my closet.
wow…. go you… you pluged a dv6000 lcd into a dv9000 hardly rocket science there compatable anyways.
@Ben Hall
Almost as compatIble as there and they’re.
How do you know it’s Coldplay if you don’t like them?
I think you’re a closet Coldplay lover
I think it’s a win simply because of the Coldplay album cover on the desktop background.

Serves him right for buying a Pavilion.
I have toddlers. I have laptops. This is what must be when what must not be becomes what is.
my mom’s g3 powerbook looked worse.
HAH thats creative…
A RUSH OF BLOOD TO THE HEAD!FTW!
i instantly reconized it once i saw it.
It’s pictures like these that make me wish I took pictures of when I had a door hinge and duck tape holding my laptop together. )= alas I got parts to properly fix it already.
hello!
Isn’t downsizing the latest trend? Or is she paying for her netbook in monthly installments?
