  1. Linda Turner says:

This reminds me of an old house we used to pass by on the way to my Grandma’s, when I was a younster. Isn’t it interesting how things make us remember.

  2. Troll says:

    LOLCAT

  3. Klickitat Annie says:

And it wasn’t even on his “honey-do” list!

  4. Grep Agni says:

Well, you have to start someplace. The roof might have been a good place…

  5. Paddy says:

Talk about polishing the brass on the Titanic!

  6. LadyBelle says:

On some massive projects you have to just pick a place to start and hope that motivates you to tackle the rest. Personally I would of chosen to have a water tight roof, but each to their own.

  7. dono1 says:

I like it because it’ll let a nice breeze blow through to cool the house off in the summer. Well, so much for the roof and broken windows. Now, as far as the new door is concerned…

  8. Monty says:

I’m guessing some kids broke the old door :(

  9. Dunk says:

    Baby steps.

  10. dono1 says:

    Or ghosts.

  11. Fixit says:

I think I pass this house almost every day…and it IS still occupied. Joe, does it sit behind the Post Office in that town?

  12. dono1 says:

    @Fixit
Depends on how you define “sit”. “Sag” might be a better verb.

  13. John says:

Well if they only had 1 door I guess that is where I would have put it, BUT if they could have gotten enough of them…would have done the roof in them, and then could have opened for nice cool breeze, and closed to keep dry. Oh yes must make sure has screen door on it, don’t want bugs to come in.

  14. TG says:

This looks like the house from “Secondhand Lions.”

  15. Carmen says:

Where was this picture taken? I am among a group of people that believe that they may know where this house is. LOL. I think I used ot pass this house on my way home from school everyday. Is it in Hammondsville, Ohio? Near the Complex and across the railroad tracks from the Church?

  16. wind says:

is it wierd that i really like that house – exept the door?

  17. Rick says:

well,at least they have a new door.

  18. notanengineer says:

    @wind
if you’re mad or crazy or insane or a lunatic, I’d say NO! :-P :-D

  19. notanengineer says:

now we’re in weird times… after WW2, a demolishon company bought old sherman tanks from the us army and used them as bulldozers (btw even the drive-in was invented this way :-D ), today people let old houses rot until the houses collapse… or are laughed at here!! :-P

  20. 1slick1 says:

    Old Victorian fixer-upper-downer

  21. mort says:

now we know why the addams family fired lurch.

  22. Paddy says:

Is it just me, or are other people having trouble seeing the comments?

  23. Paddy says:

Can’t you just see the scene in the horror movie? “Don’t open that door!” “But it looks so nice, what could be so bad behind a nice door like that?”

  24. dono1 says:

One thing’s for sure- there’s a home improvement company out there that’s got themselves one heck of a salesman (“Why Mr. Addams, the energy savings alone will pay for this thing in no time…”)

  25. BoringTroll says:

Professional contractors learned a long time ago, that the first step is to make it so they can lock up their tools. First thing to do is the door, and then the first floor windows.

  26. dono1 says:

Boring Troll: When they fall through the rotting porch they can just store their tools down there.

  27. Paddy says:

What’s the point in being able to lock the door, when you can just kick a hole in the wall?

  28. BoringTroll says:

In this state, entering via kicking a hole through a wall or breaking a window is a felony, breaking and entering, aka. B&E. Walking through a doorway, with no door, is trespassing. If the police can show that a suspect was in the building during a B&E, then the suspect risks jail time, and is likely to cooperate in returning or replacing the tools. Someone caught trespassing can promise to pay a fine (promising to pay, is far easier than actually paying).

In practice, the police may work to recover stolen property, if a felony is involved. They will do very little without evidence of a felony, because it rarely accomplishes anything.

Different laws apply in other jurisdictions. Police officers are individuals, and do not all behave the same way.

This should not be taken as legal advice.

  29. dono1 says:

In this case, B&E stands for Broken and Entertaining

  30. I LOVE this house. I wish houses could look just like this but still be structurally sound.

  31. Badgirl says:

    totally photoshopped

  32. Badgirl says:

look at the reflection of the car in the door glass. Where the heck is that coming from?

  33. Paddy says:

That’s not a reflection, that’s a car parked inside the house, because the back wall of the house is completely gone.

  34. dono1 says:

It’s got curb appeal. The curb is appealing the decision to renovate this shack.

  35. ERAL says:

    “renovators delight”
    “old world charm”
    “Tons of character”

  36. JH says:

Maybe they were too poor to do anything else? At least when the house collapses the rescue services will be able to knock.

  37. Joe D says:

Not photoshopped. I took the picture.

  38. smacksman says:

First claim on their house insurance?

  39. Ninjahedge says:

At least the lawn is mowed……

  40. afishyaknoto says:

Am I the only one that see’s the brand new riding lawnmower on the side of the house?

  41. b. says:

Maybe they’re replacing things as they fall completely off. The door fell down so they bought a new one. Once the walls and roof collapse…call the nearest roofing company. Until then…if it’s still standing…

  42. b. says:

    Good eye, afishyaknoto….

    Maybe they just moved in…?

  43. Evan says:

It’s important to keep the yard mowed. Wouldn’t want to make a bad impression on the neighbors…

  44. ShermanKent says:

@Paddy–I’ll give you a dollar to stop commenting now.

  45. Paddy says:

    @ShermanKent
OK, as soon as payment clears, I’ll stop.

  46. roslyn says:

That screen door is not in compliance with the local preservation ordinance.

  47. Valkyrie says:

I’d love to tour that place.

  48. BadBozo says:

Here’s what I see: Many, many years ago, someone spent a lot of time/money here. I see the work of a good carpenter- the lines are still straight, no sagging even from the abuse of no maintenance. The multi-pained windows are unique; the old siding costly and special; the turned porch poles; the faux turret.
What was once a tall blonde bombshell all decked out, has become that dirty old lady down the street, too proud to as for a handout…

  49. Badgirl says:

So Joe, that’s YOUR car reflected in the glass ?

  50. Fixit says:

    @Joe D
I do know where this is- double-checked today. It is sort of like a train wreck- one cannot take their eyes off as they drive by it. Joe, I work in the college town in the same county. @Carmen- not OH, but IL.

  51. dono1 says:

    @Valkyrie
Tours take place on October 31. I hear they’re a real treat. Check the dress code.

  52. Joe D. says:

    Fixit,

Yeah, kind of an attention getter. I saw when taking my dogs to the kennel. When I went back to pick them up I brought my camera.

  53. Linda Lou says:

Every remodel has to start somewhere. I would have picked the roof.

  54. Grog says:

It looks like the stimulus money is starting to flow … there is a successfully completed government weatherization project!

  55. piccini says:

    Is that house in Nyack?

  56. Carolyn J. says:

It’s a good thing I bought that new storm door. Otherwise the wind would just howl thru the place.

  57. Caju12831 says:

I love the house, but wonder why it needs a screen?

  58. Eric says:

This is not the only house like this in table grove, IL

  59. Steve M says:

This had to at least double the value of the house

  60. Rob says:

I think I see Edward Norton punching himself in the backyard…

  61. Billie Brown says:

Lovely, and the lawn is so nicely mowed!

  62. scratch799 says:

    This house looks suicidal.

  63. BikerGeek says:

I’m looking for a house in greater Boston. That’d be described as a “fixer upper” or “handyman special” and would probably go for about $650,000. An improvement over a couple of years ago when you would have had to struggle to find something like that for under $1M.

  64. Michael says:

The lawn looks good, but I think they forgot to mow the roof.

  65. denizen224 says:

Linda Lou :Every remodel has to start somewhere. I would have picked the roof.

    I would have picked a bulldozer. :D

  66. Brian says:

YOU KNOW THE NEXT BIG STORM THE DOOR WILL BE THE ONLY THING LEFT STANDING

  67. reddog says:

    Hmmmm
i dont get it reminds me of Detroit

  68. Bo says:

    Gotta start somewhere.

  69. Martyn says:

Is this in Michigan? I’ve seen a lot of empty houses like this.
I was wondering who just kept maintaining the lawns though. All those empty houses still had mowed lawns…

  70. Indira says:

I still like this house better than any of those McMansions out there.

  71. nyoko says:

the manicured lawn adds a real nice touch…

  72. KateK says:

    @Paddy

    Paddy, thank you. Literally LOLing!

  73. BungalowMo says:

I’d take that place & save it! I bet she was a real beauty at one time!

  74. BungalowMo says:

    Indira :
I still like this house better than any of those McMansions out there.

    You’ve got that right!!!

  75. FixerDave says:

If I were told to fix something, anything, on that house… I’d do the door. There’s no way I’d get anywhere near that roof. I wouldn’t fix anything inside either… no way I’d go in that place.

  76. Robin says:

There’s a good, strong locks on those doors so don’t even bother. You’d probably pick the wall much faster, with a toothpick! To make it some a sport, break entry with a cue tip!!

  77. Amy says:

Look Atticus! The Radley’s are fixin’ up their place!!

  78. Marth says:

Does the Adam’s family REALLY need extra security?

  79. buildingHousesForDummies says:

Is this the house they used to make the “UP” movie?

  80. Jo says:

This reminded me a house that had a tree growing from its roof. And no, it wasn’t a tree house.

  81. Lupin13 says:

This house was built and first owned by a mad scientist who challenged the very laws of god and nature. After him, it was owned by a city Alderman. He and his whole family were mysteriously decapitated in the blizzard of 1902. Next, a serial killer lived there. Then it was a temporary hospital for those dying in the flu epidemic that followed WWI. During Prohibition it was a safe house for booze runners. Five of them were killed in that house during a gang hit. Then another serial killer lived in it. Hippy college students moved in in the 1960s and massacred each other during an LSD binge. A cult moved in in the mid ’70s and committed mass suicide in the house. Then another serial killer moved in.
The house is now an official portal to the third level of Hell but the new screen door just lets in SO much light and really kinda spruces up the place, ya know?
