  1. KitFox says:

    Wut?
    No duct tape?
This is a task *made* for duct tape.

  2. Rampart says:

Aussie bolts used to their finest!

  3. dono1 says:

“And once your bumber heals, we’ll remove these and it’ll be just like new again, Mrs. Jones. Now, would you like to pay cash or check?”

  4. afishyaknoto says:

Strip ties, the new duct tape. Duct tape is so yesterday.

  5. Big Frank says:

They could have used color ones to match!! would have looked better…. Just kidding.

  6. notanengineer says:

I don’t know why, but d’like how the bumper broke. btw… is this offensive to other people when I call that frekin’ fix an emo car?? (but the blood on the scars is missing!!) °_° :-X

  7. Paddy says:

Now THAT is a true Frankenstein fix!!! It’s alive!

  8. keith says:

that’s a new Government approved dealer repair from GM. ;)

  9. Daniel says:

Shame on him for not doing a baseball stitch.

  10. JKirchartz says:

Now I wish my bumper was broken… that looks awesome.

  11. Dr Frankenstein says:

    (usual nickname, no pun intended.)

A lot of people do that, actually. My brother, for instance.

  12. Luke says:

It looks like from first teasers of NFS ProStreet… ;)

  13. Derelict says:

I’ll give it an A for effort. Think about drilling all those tiny holes and then threading the zip-ties through!

    Classier than duct tape, too!

  14. Stacy B says:

Oh hey, awesome! I took this photo. :P No, it isn’t my car.

  15. Wifey says:

My husband did this once. I’m so ashamed.

  16. McGuyver5000 says:

Hey, if it works, don’t fix it!

  17. Guy says:

I’m fully impressed. A smart (hopefully temporary) solution.

  18. JH says:

You won’t have any trouble over parking
‘Move over, if I hit your car mine’ll grow back.’

  19. Paddy says:

It gives a whole new meaning to plastic surgery.

  20. Teebo says:

Probably will survie the weather better than duct tape. Kind of fashionable. Yeah, should have done baseball stitch.

  21. jimmytvf says:

    zip ties FTW

  22. Theo says:

    @Teebo
Exactly… duct tape doesn’t last through seasonal temperature changes.

I’ve actually used this “car suture” method twice before, successfully, but on the plastic airshield underneath the front end, not on a visible bumper.

  23. dono1 says:

Just goes to show you, those plastic bumpers aren’t all they’re cracked up to be.

  24. dagný says:

    hahaha

  25. Jason says:

There’s a blue Neon that has a bumper rig like that around here :P

I do have to argue with Theo though. The bumper on my Ranger was held together with duct tape and it lasted 2 years before coming off. I live in Alabama so we have summers in the 100s and winters in the 10s.

  26. markcra says:

I must confess to doing the same repair to my Fiat Uno. The black ABS bumpers and black cable ties were a lot more subtle than this example though and I drilled out the tip of the crack to stop it propagating.

  27. Theo says:

    @Jason
Even to the 10s, eh? And what kind of snow do you get down there? How about road salt? ;) (MN boy here)

Those zip-tie sutures may be butt ugly, but they’ll last as long as the bumper itself.

  28. alex says:

I did the same thing to my trashcan after the claw of death on the garbage truck destroyed it. I think it’s classy.

  29. Matt says:

    @Derelict
But duct tape might have blended with the silver better!

  30. nick says:

ive done this, mine is cross-stitched and connector ends are inside bumper.
    DRIFT CARS HAVE SCARS!

  31. mooch1e says:

Someone was totally coked out when they did this….

  32. greek goddess says:

sad thing is my ex was going to “fix” my car like this.. idk if it would be better or worse

  33. Jon says:

Somewhere out there a silver ’97 Civic is driving around with a repair like this, but it’s inside the wheel well and nearly unnoticeable.

Seeing this and reading the comments makes me want to do it deliberately with the baseball stitch. Maybe on a motorcycle fender. (I would have it reinforced on the underside. It would be for looks, not strength/stability.)

  34. DrFranken says:

I have come computers that need work. Is this guy available?

  35. Jamison says:

I wonder if this is what customers mean when they come into my body shop and ask me what the car will look like once we’ve repaired it.

  36. cheesesteaks_and_madeleines says:

Oh, my God. This is EPIC. I love the sewing…they must’ve used a knitting needle (or a letter opener) to lovingly stitch the two sides together. I’m willing to bet that whoever did this had student loans up the wazoo.

  37. ShakingChicago says:

Like Nick said – born from drifting. When you wreck you bumper a few times a month you get crafty on keeping it alive.

  38. Prom says:

Don’t you know that duct-tape lasts a lot longer in red-neck land by proliferation? Wonder-cousin powers unite! (nothing personal BTW!)

  39. Lauren Ramberger says:

Duct tape covering would now match the paint!

  40. reddog says:

    wooooo hooooooooo
    CASH FOR CLONKERS

  41. Scrapbookers everywhere will regcognize this as the work of the Crop A Dile.

  42. Laura says:

But, in this case, duct tape would have MATCHED.

  43. curtis says:

    @nick
exactly what I was thinking, I have seen hundreds of drift cars with zipties holding on body parts let alone just holding then together. Only problem is that it looks like that emblem says “escort”

  44. Steph says:

Umm…is that the shadow of a lobster taking the picture? Or did someone with lobster claw hands take it? Or..wait… is this the handy work of Lobster Claw Hands? If so, doubly impressed.

  45. Kyle says:

This is surreal; I’ve seen this car In The Real World. I don’t remember where, but I’m gonna guess Pittsburgh, since I spent most of my summer there. I can assure you, it’s even more awesome in person.

  46. accordionhero says:

I have absolutely done this before, haha

  47. This is the approved method for bumper repairs in municipalities all over the country. When a Crown Victoria blasts a U-ey through a rough or steeply banked median to go after a speeder, the rear bumper cover generally tears in two places. Zip tires are threaded through as stitches to keep the bumper cover in one piece.

Not only is the zip tie the solution to the problem, but it is also the preventative. There are a few holes on the bottom lip of a Crown Victoria bumper. There are metal supports just above them closer to the base of the trunk floor. You can zip tie the bumper up to those and prevent median U-turn tears that way. It is called a “tuck”

  48. Bryn says:

It’s a legitimate way of repairing bumper bars to their original finish. First you drill holes and thread through the zip ties, then you use a special plastic welding stick and a heat gun to fill in the cracks, remove the zip ties and fill the holes, and then sand the whole thing back. You can then paint it to the original colour. My dad is a panel repairer for a rally car team and repaired my van’s bumper after i hit a kangaroo

  49. iggy says:

This would be cool if the whole car was done like that.

  50. Zitto says:

No but seriously, this is common in rally, this guy must be ken block!

  51. bob says:

I’ve done that before! works awesome if you have a black car..
