    Ohh, Gibraltar.

  2. Ángel says:

That is the airport from Gibraltar, the little territory at the bottom of Spain.

  3. Jimmy says:

    “Hey, I’m landing here”

  4. slarty says:

that’s in Gibraltar. The runway is actually surroundet by water at the front and the end.

    36°09’04″ N 5°20’55″ W

  5. me says:

    What if…

  6. Witty says:

thank god this doesnt happen in USA except for railroad crossing.

    • Sean says:

And Airforce bases – there’s one in San Antonio with something like this – albeit on a not-often congested road.

  7. anonymous says:

Why do you feel the need to watermark the images on this site? You very rarely give credit to the source, and some of these images are quite old.

  8. Monty says:

Just like waiting for a train to go by on the railway ^_^

  9. Pete says:

That’s Gibraltar airport – I’ve landed there once and flown out once, although on separate trips a couple of years apart.

All over the town you can tell when a plane’s coming in – closing the road over the runway backs up traffic everywhere.

  10. dono1 says:

Probably works much better than before, when they used stop signs.

  11. You know, for all the trouble it causes, it would probably make more sense to just build a reinforced tunnel under the runway.

  12. purdlemeow says:

Rule #1: The bigger vehicle ALWAYS goes first.

  13. mew4ever23 says:

    @Ara Pehlivanian
Isn’t that what the Orlando Airport did?

  14. Jason says:

Hmm I guess that’s one way to keep people from running red lights.

  15. Paddy says:

Maybe the plane had to make an emergency landing in the street because the duct/duck/speed/gaffer/100mph/1000mph/airframe tape holding the winglet on failed.

  16. dono1 says:

“This is your captain speaking. Lunch today will be a delicious sliced turkey breast sandwich on grilled sourdough bread. Just go down about two blocks on your left…”

  17. Tammy says:

From what I remember they only have about 4 flights a day.

  18. Rampart says:

@ Paddy- HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! (co-workers now annoyed at my seemingly spontaneous laughter)

  19. mort says:

    are we there yet?!?!?!?!?!

  20. Xodiac says:

@ Ara Pehlivanian: Do you have any idea how expensive a tunnel would be? No, they should just make a highway overpass there. Cross below, cross above, same deal, right? :)

  21. x says:

remembers me of Lord of War… Nicholas Cage landed his plane on a desert way xP

  22. dono1 says:

When the tower said, “Taxi on the runway” they weren’t kidding.

  23. Paddy says:

    Terminal confusion!

  24. Badgirl says:

“Why do you feel the need to watermark the images on this site? You very rarely give credit to the source, and some of these images are quite old.”

    @anonymous

I don’t have a dog in this fight, but I’m going to take a stab at answering your question anyway. Let’s say I forward this post to my facebook page, for example, and my friends see it and come to this site based on the watermark. That drives traffic to this site. It’s called marketing. Now, given that everything on here is FREE to you, the consumer, what exactly is your beef? The folks running this site appear to be pretty careful about copyright infringement – check out the little link at the bottom called Legal.

Old or not, these posts are quite funny and I haven’t seen them before so they are new to me. What’s even funnier than the pictures are the comments. So, anonymous, relax and enjoy. And thanks for visiting.
(Apologies to the people in charge if I stepped on any toes. This site rocks!)

  25. Looks like an air traffic controller has had too much time in the tower.

  26. MartySh says:

um… Captain… what the heck, just park it there… shhhhh.. get the car people pissed off… “Gibraltar Tower, this looks like nice place to park… over” …. silence…

  27. Bubbles says:

    @Xodiac
The Houston Airport has a runway that runs under the expressway, I believe.

  28. Alico says:

@ Xodiac: I think that would make it a bit hard for planes to land, it extending over the runway and all. Other than that, it could work =P

  29. timmis says:

    City Planning Fail!!

  30. crazyscot says:

@timmis: Have you ever seen the map of Gibraltar? It’s mostly a rock. There’s only one place to build an airport, and only one road out of town.

  31. badinga says:

I sooo hated the queues because of the planes when leaving Gib after work…

  32. numan says:

    @anonymous

FYI, a watermark is transparent and goes right on the image. What this site uses I don’t have a word for, but it’s more or less a caption.

  33. Treeki says:

I was really surprised to see this here, I live in Gibraltar and I didn’t expect it would end up here. This is a pretty familiar sight and causes terrible queues a lot of the time.

Sometimes even, we’ve been leaving to go into Spain and the runway has been closed for a few minutes for no reason (no plane in sight) and then reopened – that’s how bad it is.

And yes, it is an actual road which crosses the runway – it’s the only connection out of Gibraltar.

  34. Badgirl says:

Anybody up for a game of Chicken? Anybody??

  35. washosky says:

    Gibraltar is unique!! :D

  36. Candace says:

This arrangement could NEVER work in Los Angeles. They don’t yeild to trains here so I’m sure planes wouldn’t be the exception.

  37. bubba gump says:

    @Ara Pehlivanian
this being Gibraltar, there probably already is a tunnel, or 10, under there. That place is like swiss cheese with over 100 miles of tunnels, all military, on this little rock.

  38. bubba gump says:

    @Bubbles
other way around, expressway goes under the runway, which is a bridge over the road. Common place in numerous airports including DFW

  39. Kinsak says:

This isn’t FailBlog you know, give me duct tape

  40. Gish says:

    Holy Crap. Thats real?

  41. ja says:

ima toga i kod nas hahahahaha

  42. Peter says:

I was there just last week. Hilarious. There is always a crowd crossing the runaway, and a sign that asks to walk fast. Really fast.

  43. Corblimey McMastersloch says:

    Stupid Americans.

  44. Rotten says:

Imagine trying to run That intersection….
    “Oh, I have a few more seconds….”

  45. Jeff says:

If I was the pilot, I’d put on my right turn signal and make a turn just to see everyone pee their pants.

  46. cheesesteaks_and_madeleines says:

And then BOOM the car gets plowed into by a 747. I wonder if they have a problem with cars getting into the engines. Or monkeys. I heard there’s a lot of monkeys in Gibraltar.

  47. Kevan says:

Its Gibraltarrr XD i live thereeee, its actually safer than it looks =P

  48. Jólhann says:

    Angel, Little? You mean tiny…

My teacher once told me ’bout that.

    LoL

  49. reddog says:

    @Bubbles
also JFK in new york city

  50. cageordie says:

Heathrow (LHR) has a similar thing, but it’s just the taxi way from the east end of the airport to the BA hangers across East Church Lane. This is common on small strips too, but without the traffic lights. In California Simmons Road is one of two that crosses Gravelly Valley Airport, the signs just say to look carefully before crossing.

  51. Gibbo says:

Unfortunately I can only see two comments, but just one remark:
LXGB is indeed the only international airport in the world where a major road (incidentally the ONLY way into Gibraltar from Spain) crosses a runway (and cuts it into more or less equal halfs…).
Of course, planes have priority at all times and the barriers go down when an airplanes taxis, takes off or lands on that runway.

For those who do not know where the Gibraltar is: it is at the southernmost tip of the Iberian peninsula neighboring Spain, and NO, it is not part of Spain, it is the only remaining colony of the British Crown in Europe and is part of the European Union as a British Overseas Territory.
It is most famous for the rock apes, berber makaks, and it the only place in Europe where these animals live wild and free.

  52. Tito Pelon says:

As a spanish traveler, I’ve passed trough this road at least two times. It’s so dificult to cross with a plane, because the airport has a little traffic, but its still impressive. As Gibbo said, the buildings near te road (those with red roof), are the frontier pass!! So if you want to enter Gibraltar by car, you will pass trough the airport.

Actually there aren’t any barriers at all.

The rest of the city are so surrealistic indeed.

    • Toots says:

Um, I lived there for 20 years and I KNOW they have barriers which go up and down when planes are due to land.

  53. When Penguinz Attack! says:

Holy flapjack & a pogostick! Just imagine someone really needing to get to work & running onto the runway with a plane coming……

  54. anonymous says:

[floors it] I think I can make it across!!

  55. jazzmancarron says:

that is definitely a place where you DO NOT want to run a red light.

  56. Gonzster says:

Well that’s just silly. They should have built a bridge over the runway, amiriteorwat?

  57. inaka_rob says:

I think that is the same airport that was shown in Mythbusters. The myth was that a road also suns RIGHT behind one of the runways. and traffic is also shut down when a plane is taking off or landing.
an idoit taxi drive went anyway, and the backdraft from the plain lifted the entire car off the ground and launched it a number of meters away. turned out to be myth confirmed.

  58. Your blog is fantastic. But this picture is the best.

    Congratulations! Very good!

You have a new Brazilian fan now!

  59. random peon says:

I tell you we have the time to cross !

  60. ryan says:

    Don’t run the red light…….

  61. Jim says:

There is such a thing at Naval Air Station North Island in California: An airfield taxiway intersects a four-lane road. We had to stop traffic and do a FOD walk (looking for rocks etc.) each time the aircraft came through.

  62. ROKASniper says:

    Population Control?

  63. Paula says:

Kia bonega foto! – What a great photo! :)

  64. phil says:

“uh, insurance agent… i jus got hit by some domb a** pilot on a plane.. you think his insurance will cover me???”

  65. Spent a week living in a boat in Gibraltar, the harbour is next to the takeoff end of the runway, nothing quite like waking up to a 747 flying straight at you!

  66. XXX says:

LOL i see that nearly everyday. XD

  67. Anne says:

Many of the nations freeways were actually organized to be emergency runways,(pity I can’t remember the percent), Give it up for American Ingenuity

  68. Major says:

First, I thought this was an emergency landing.

And then I read the article.

    Dog ho.

    • Toots says:

Nope, not emergency – all real. Apparently it’s quite a difficult airport to land at because it’s so small (no room for error) and it suffers from crosswinds.

I have friends who’ve landed in Gibraltar in a flight sim and they say similar.

  69. Know it all says:

They’re currently building a tunnel under the runway at the eastern end. This road will still stay though for emergencies and pedestrians so its all good :)

  70. just another person commenting on how much you FAILED says:

the person who designed that must be really stupid.

the people who approved his plans are retarded.

    • Toots says:

Have you actually taken a look at the map of Gibraltar? There is actually no other place on the map where one could have built a runway that is a safe enough distance from residential areas.
