Hi Mrs FixIt,
Awesome website, I’m actually starting a similar website to yours. not focusing on dodgy fix it jobs though. I was wondering whether you had any advice on getting my site up the rankings like yours?
Nick
The pics on this site are great but the comment threads are the real treat. I am adding this to my check daily list and sending to friends – especially the ones who are do-it-yourself fixer types. Keep up the good work. Love it.
probably the user of this redneck shower will use it only once …. before his own funeral *devil* (hope this smiley will work, if not… don’t fix ik ok??)
ok. so they took the time to wrap up the cord, how about…i dunno, unwrapping it and running it ABOVE the showerhead? just a thought. seems like plenty of slack. what do i know? maybe the picture was just taken to be witty.
could be a german plug, but anyway, I bet the cord is usually hung above the shower curtain’s rail. Still wouldn’t feel exactly comfortable, but would be tolerably safe. The whole thing would shorten out anyway before electrocuting you.
While in South America our showers were set up similar to this. Most residences, hotels, etc do not have hot water heaters so the (cold) water would run through a container connected to the shower head. This container was plugged in to an electrical outlet and would heat small amounts of water and VOILA…you were able to take a hot shower!
Yes, Mike and Kevin are right, this was in Beijing. The full story is here: http://simpsonsparadox.com/2008/01/not-fixed.html but the short version is that our hot water heater needed to be replaced and our landlord called a friend to “fix” it for us. I wish I had taken a photo of the friend’s face as he proudly showed us his handiwork…
Yes, I should probably have moved my tampon box before taking the photo, but other things (like, um, death by shower?) were on my mind. I hope no one learned the facts of life from this photo. These were specially shipped in by care package from the US because they’re not available in China and that’s not something one wants to kludge.
This is so China. I’ve actually seen this type of set up here in person. As well as the laundry washing machine in the shower. I just found your sight, but I hope to submit several pics of things I’ve seen here!
In another Chinese apartment, I really got to like the washing machine in the shower area. It was a perfect place for my shampoo and lotion and glasses!
This will not gonna hurt me, I’m familiar with electric shocks. But for most people the real problem is the technical design: the power cord is too short.
The only reason this is on this site, is that the fixer did not run the cord OVER the shower curtain rod. With the cord over the top of the shower head, no chance for electrocution.
Are me and that other guy the only people who’ve noticed that both the water heater and power strip cords are long enough to move the entire power strip out of the way? Say….above the shower head or water heater.
Yea it’s still a gerry-rig…but once you move the power strip out from under the shower head/water flow, it’s not a big deal.
Well Nick, duct tape and zip ties are always a good start IMHO, but it all comes down to our awesome readers, who found us, shared the site with their friends, and keep coming back to visit and participate. You guys RULE. Now pass me some museum putty, a wire coathanger, and a brillo pad – this may get ugly….
Wow! That looks for certain to be deadly. There’s got to be a story behind this. There must be.
Shouldn’t they have moved the tampon box before taking the photo?!?
Right, cause THAT’S what’s wrong with the picture…
Cause everyone is as uptight as you are about something as simple as tampons. Grow up.
Why? Ya never seen a tampon box before?
I’ve seen tampons before.
…it was HORRIBLE. O.O
That will make for one HOT shower
Bah. Those English outlets all have little doors for each of the plugs. The guy will be fine!
“Bah. Those English outlets all have little doors for each of the plugs. The guy will be fine!”
Those are NOT English outlets, and wall outlets for power are NEVER installed in bathrooms in the UK.
You can clearly see that the plug appears to be of the EU Schuko style, or similar.
“wall outlets for power are NEVER installed in bathrooms in the UK”
That’s why they needed the extension.
Caution: Do not use if you are pregnant, have a heart condition, or if you are considered sane.
I imagine they plug it in to create and maintain hot water then unplug it and take a shower.
I’m trying to figure out whether to show this to the plumbers at work, or the electricians!
Oh, why not….BOTH!!!
Dylan reference?
I’m glad they took the precaution of wrapping up the extra cord to prevent someone from tripping over it on their way into the deathtub.

I’ve added you to my links page as well.
Its the next best thing @ death row.
Who needs electric chairs…

Id love to see a pic of the server this site is running on.
@Jeff Schu
Tampons are a fact of life, deal with it. Besides, I think it gives the photo more of an intimate feel.
@dono1
Once again dono, you have the best comment on the thread.
Those look like Chinese plugs to me (British ones are square)
I thought you were referring to the box of tampons…”Those look like Chinese plugs to me. The British ones are square.” LOL
ok. so they took the time to wrap up the cord, how about…i dunno, unwrapping it and running it ABOVE the showerhead? just a thought. seems like plenty of slack. what do i know? maybe the picture was just taken to be witty.
that is how you get rid of bad renters
For good.

I never get bored coming to this blog
I’ve seen this photo before, in a blog about living in China, so I reckon you’re spot on there

That looks like it may be a tankless heater. It would have to be plugged in to generate any warm water.
Looks like they have a Target store there too wherever “there” is.
@Michael Jacksonās Two Hand Touch
You hope!
Wait, this isn’t what waterboarding is?
Neither. They’re the Italian system.
hmmm i dont get it … is it a tampon commercial ?
When I lived in Thailand the showers looked just like this, too.
Yikes! I really hope the tampons aren’t supposed to have a role in this sick setup!
Hi guys!

Just saying…
No really, your landlord WAS trying to kill you?
No, no kludging the feminine necessities. NONONO. *shudders*
Ahh… I figured this to be one of those, “Its fine, just unplug it when you get in the shower then plug it back in when you are finished” situations…
too funny..
This is so China. I’ve actually seen this type of set up here in person. As well as the laundry washing machine in the shower. I just found your sight, but I hope to submit several pics of things I’ve seen here!

surely you’d run the cables over the top of the curtain tail?!?
What’s wrong? Just don’t use when you’re wet.
This is the standard configuration that KBR uses to electrocute soldiers in Iraq… the tampons are ‘don’t ask.’ Bush approved!
Did my dad fix this for you?
Go go gadget GFCI outlet!
Now that is funny.
Don’t worry – the surge protector will protect the water heater.
Wow nice. All they need to do is put a chain link fence in there to hold onto for stability in the shower.
That’s a helluva a way to wake up!
This will not gonna hurt me, I’m familiar with electric shocks. But for most people the real problem is the technical design: the power cord is too short.
The tampons have a reason to be there. You need to stick them in the ears before taking a shower, so the smoke doesnt come out.
I’d expect the user to unplug the heater prior to taking a shower.
A little electricity wont hurt you.
Fake.
Not fake!
The only reason this is on this site, is that the fixer did not run the cord OVER the shower curtain rod. With the cord over the top of the shower head, no chance for electrocution.
Um…hello?
Are me and that other guy the only people who’ve noticed that both the water heater and power strip cords are long enough to move the entire power strip out of the way? Say….above the shower head or water heater.
Yea it’s still a gerry-rig…but once you move the power strip out from under the shower head/water flow, it’s not a big deal.
that is sexy! as us plumbers put it this is gotta be a joke there is no way it can be used this way thats a booster heater itll cook um that close
The question still remains hot water or death,i personally prefer death over a cold shower
Surely you’d use a rubber shower mat? That way you wouldn’t slip AND you’d be insulated…
P
