Round Two Photoshop Contest…Now With 100% Less Comic Sans

After the success of the first Caption Contest, we decided that it must continued if only for the sake of lulz you all gave us (and a few “Wow, that’s like ridiculous good”). So here goes.

Clearly, this building is an innocent casualty of a Power Rangers battle. It has fallen and it can’t get up. Unless YOU fix it. Once again, the email for contest entries is thereifixedit+contest2@gmail.com

After some initial confusion last time about dates and times for deadlines, all contest entries submitted by Monday morning (PST) will be in the running. Winners will receive two(2!) free internets and will be announced sometime Monday afternoon.

So what are you waiting for? Open up that copy of MS-Paint, GIMP or your “liberated” version of Photoshop and help set right the mess caused by unnecessary giant robot violence.

Blarg. I am ded.

No upstairs neighbors. Great view. Laid back landlord. Inquire within.

  3. Billy Bob says:

I am in awe of this building, if it is real. How is it even possible — wouldn’t a building that size shatter if it fell? And was anything crushed beneath it?

  4. jack says:

    what is a free internets?

  5. Upsilon667 says:

    That building needs Life-Alert.

  6. Chaz says:

  16. L Walker says:

So easy to yell at your right stair or left stair neighbors, just go out the balcony doors and walk slightly left or right… you don’t even have to ride the flatulator … we could not with all due respect call it an elevator if you are not being elevated.

  17. QuickFix says:

@SeNiLe How could a building just fall over like that and not be a pile of rubble? Something smells here.

  18. anonymous-coward says:

3 things to consider by those that think the photo is a hoax:

    1. Earthquakes are very powerful.

    2. Earthquake damage is unpredictable.

    3. Not all buildings are as shoddily constructed as in the US.

  19. ForFunSake says:

In case anyone still wondering if it’s true or a photoshop job, you can check on this to confirm…

    Pretty crazy huh?

  20. JJ says:

The photo’s not a fake; it’s part of the Lotus Riverside complex in Shanghai, and it collapsed … maybe 3 weeks ago. They apparently built the building and *then* decided to excavate underneath it to put in a parking garage.

The Google News index is here — http://news.google.com/news?pz=1&ned=us&hl=en&q=%22lotus+riverside%22 — and there’s a page with some other pix of the site here — http://news.google.com/news?pz=1&ned=us&hl=en&q=%22lotus+riverside%22 . (Though, honestly, the one above is the best.)

  21. JJ says:

Ack!! Sorry — the page with the other pix is here — http://www.zonaeuropa.com/200906c.brief.htm .

  22. Dyedinthewoolcynic says:

(guy from England)says “Hey, come check out my new flat!”

  23. Clyde says:

Yeah, what are “two(2!) free internets”??

  24. mark says:

    @anonymous-coward
anonymous coward- you may be right but according to jj they are just as stupid

  25. nik says:

    I went to the link.
Is it just me or dose all the other buildings look the same?
    And do people live there?

  26. Angie K says:

Short time reader, first time commenter. I loved the last contest, and decided to enter this one. I hope I get the two free internets! yippee skippy!

  27. Badgirl says:

“I’ll huff and I’ll puff and I’ll blow your house down,” said the big bad wolf. Dude was not messin around.

  28. Diablo says:

    “Careful!!! That’s a Load Bearing Nail……Damn it…We’re boned…”

  29. Mr Obnox says:

Put upright, ironed the wrinkles out and moved to the beach!

  31. pconwell says:

    @anonymous-coward
Is it really considered shoddy construction to design your building not to fall down in the first place?

  32. Roland says:

@everyone: the source image is real. I have seen this with my own eyes, it was in Shanghai. I heard that there was one worker crushed under it. Otherwise no injuiries. It was a building under contruction.

I must say, since seeing this, I do not like to get into the really tall buildings here in Shanghai….

  33. Jon says:

It doesn’t take much more than a week or two of high school physics to see what’s wrong here. Go to the links with more views of the building and look at the foundation. It’s like 12 or 18 inches thick. The hole it left behind is just dirt. There are no substantial footings or piles or any other form of anchor. You could get away with that if the ground won’t settle after construction and the building is a shape that by itself resists shifting/tilting, or if it’s a very short building. But this was built like a domino. Too bad there weren’t others lined up to fall. That would have truly been epic.

By comparison, the center of gravity of the Empire State Building is like 50 feet off the ground because the foundation is so substantial. It would have to tip so far it’s almost laying down before it would be past the center of balance and actually fall to the ground.

  34. Jon says:

Okay, I take that back. It did have piles. The links in the above comments show WAY more photos than I had seen when this was shown on other news sites before. Still, the pilings look rather weak for a building of this size, regardless of whether or not they were digging next to it.

  35. Alan says:

Why do all the buildings I live in have a great view on the OTHER side?

  36. Jerrxu says:

I heard the news, this building is in China. The building was strong so didn’t fall apart but, like Jon said, the foundation was weak because of nearby buildings.

  37. billfold jimnasium says:

    I always loose at jingah

  38. billfold jimnasium says:

ok everyone to the otherside of the building,,,oops too late

  39. billfold jimnasium says:

told you the world was tilted

  40. TonyS says:

This is one of those “Laid Back” retirement communities I’ve read about…

  41. Rachel says:

how is that even like that? i mean think about it a building on its side! like it should collapse that is very unlikely too happen.

  42. Blacktape says:

that tends to happen when the builders get a change of plans, or forgot to do somthing, and start digging the basement out /after/ the building was set up.. check out the links, there are some good photos of the other buildings as well. You are looking from the top (or what /was/ the top,) down.

  43. nicki says:

    the windows didn’t shatter!

  44. Scott M. says:

I wonder how many apartments sold in the other building next door…

  45. user_name says:

  46. Mike says:

  47. herds789 says:

Someone was honking their horn below and everyone leaned out of their windows to see who it was…
