This is a common solution to both the noise and overresponsiveness of the standard Rock Band drum kit.
Gives a whole new meaning to the term ‘beat sock.’
They didn’t even do it right. It works better if the dampening pad tension bands go around the drum pads rather than over them.
its nothing funny, its just a well known hack to dampen the pad so that it registers the hit on the pad in sync when you are doing harder beats
Remember, what may be common to a hardcore/moderate gamer might be more weird to someone who doesn’t play videogames at all.

If you play this game enough to get irritated and need, much less concoct a hack, you should just buy a real drum set and learn to play. It’s much more rewarding, productive, and likely to get you a girlfriend.

Talent of playing real drums and guitar can carry over to hitting notes passing by a screen very easy. You cannot take video game skills and play guitar or drums from it.
Talent and skill is something people work at and nurture. No one cares if you are talented and skilled at a video game because it doesn’t translate into anything useful in real life.

I’ve had guitar player friends who try playing Rock Band or Guitar Hero, and it’s hard for them. It doesn’t mean they’ll be good at the game. They’re different. No, playing the video game doesn’t make you good at the real instrument. But being good at the real instrument doesn’t make you good at the game either. It might help a little, but probably not a lot.
The video game drums are pretty good at teaching rhythms and how to work the kick drum, as well as just overall coordination. THAT can be very useful. Especially when you use the drum trainer. It’s the same basic concept, and a lot more similar to the real thing than the guitars are.
However, with the guitar…there is very little crossover in skills outside maybe finger dexterity and reaction time.
And being talented at an instrument doesn’t necessarily translate into anything useful outside of playing the instrument, just like being good at the video game doesn’t translate into anything useful outside of that. Sure, being good at a real instrument means you can play music, but that’s about it. But it doesn’t necessarily mean you can write your OWN music. If you’re good at playing it, but can’t write songs for crap and just play covers, that’s not really much better than being good at Rock Band or Guitar Hero.

actually yes, if you play on the higher levels then it does teach you how to coordinate your hands and feet better, and dissociate movements if needed, my friend learned on rock band drums, and is a very good drummer

You are given precise instructions and timing to hit said circular objects. Plus, 4 circular pads in a row with a pedal is nothing at all like a drum kit with 4-10 cymbals, hi-hat, snare, several toms and generally 3 or more foot pedals, plus any other addons that the drummer may need.
My point was that a trained drummer could smash Rockband/GH in no time at all with almost zero learning curve. Someone who played video game drums for 5 years would not be able to sit down at a real kit and be able to do the same. Sure you will be better then not have playing the game but you wont get past much more then a basic hi-hat/hi-hat/snare and tom-tom roll.

My friend who plays real guitar says it makes it harder to play Rock Band guitar. He’s like “I keep trying to hit a G chord but it wants me to hit yellow! Real guitars don’t have yellow!”
Anyway, my boyfriend and I play lots of video games together, including Rock Band, and it’s fun. To people who say you should go learn a real instrument instead: I also play Tetris, so I guess I should go stack actual blocks instead. Or shoot actual zombies with actual guns in an actual post-apocalyptic world instead of just in video games.
Believe me, I’m perfectly aware that playing Rock Band doesn’t make me good at real instruments, it just makes me good at Rock Band. Which is fun, wheee!

Agreed. Being a guitarist, I play guitar hero with ease. My gamer friend (plays the game daily) picks up my guitar and after 5 minutes of trying to wrap his hand around a chord shape complains about his fingers hurting.
have you ever thought that maby you are good as teh game a natural if you will first time i played it i picked it up very fast and i have never played an instument but on the other hand my dad and some friends who play drums and guitar have said that the instuments dont help at all and in some cases make it harder as you have learnt to go to differant cords or hi-hats that are not in the game. being good at teh game only means you are good at the game just as being good at and instument means you are only good at the instument, the only way i helps is if you sing for a band and sing on the game that is the only way the skills will cross over. also as someone said earlyer if a girl is not comfortable with me playing a game i dont want to be with someone that shallow but anyway bands are so overated and we are flooded with shit groups of people thinking they can play. also getting girls has nothign to do with the fact that you play an instrument of game and if it is tehn she is shallow as she should like you for who you are rather than what you can do

To all those that say real is better than simulated/emulated or vice versa, get the heck over it. That’s nothing more than “my job is harder than your job”, “my skill is harder than your skill”. It’s frackin’ foolish, let people enjoy what they enjoy. Jesus, if there’s anything these guys should learn it’s the fact that artificually simulated exercise DOES improve trained responsed to real world events, go look at all the soliders who play video games… this is a beginning for percussion video games and if you can’t see the direction is going — I don’t feel a loss whatsoever. “Real vs. Fake” an argument that will go on for all time, there was a time where rock music was the “imposter”, don’t forget your roots.

Dear “learn a REAL instrument” people,
This is a game, it’s for fun. Even my fiance, who plays real guitar well, has FUN playing Guitar Hero and Rock Band. Why? It’s a game, games are fun. All games, even scrabble, are fun to get high scores are and can become quite addictive. It doesn’t mean that the people playing it think they are playing a real instrument and have real musical talent. Well, some may but they probably also think that they are tough for shooting people in a video game.
You also have to look at the fact that it does teach people coordination and how to stay in a beat.
Stop dissing and start having some damn fun!

This whole argument is ridiculous, shit, I love playing rock band. One reason I love rock band is how many people start playing real instruments because of it. Everyone will eventually find there way to a real instrument if that’s really what they find they like. I play guitar, bass and drums professionally, and it’s nothing like rock band. however, you can’t deny the coordination it builds. It promotes independent movement of the limbs, and develops better capacity for muscle memory. The point is that if someone really wants to play, they will. If someone wants to play rockband in their spare time, maybe being a musician just isn’t for them. I wouldn’t necessarily glorify someone who’s awesome at rock band in the same way i would a phenomenal drummer or guitarist, but i give them credit, they can do something better than me. It’s all in how people decide to spend their time.

I suggest you look up the video where Rush was on the Colbert Report and tried to play Tom Sawyer on Rock Band. Neil Peart, arguably one of the best drummers in rock, failed miserably.

A couple problems with the whole ‘go play a real instrument’ thing:
a) They are assuming that all people playing the game do not already play a real instrument, which is clearly not so.
b) They are assuming that all people playing the game think of the game as a replacement for learning a real instrument. This is very much not true and probably only a very small minority of players.
c) They are assuming that all people playing the game have enough time to devote to learning to play and practicing a real instrument. Some people who play these games are actually very busy and have very limited free time a week to devote to activities outside of their job/school.
d) They are assuming that all people playing the game can afford to own a real instrument. Some people don’t have enough money to buy and maintain an instrument, not to mention lessons. A decent guitar alone can cost $200+ (the prices can go VERY high, over $5k), new strings $4-$50+, cleaning kits $10-$25+, amps $200+ (again can go very high). So the entire cost comes to about $414, and that’s before you add lessons and any other crud you might want or need and any possible fines for noise,
e) They are assuming that all people who play the game WANT to learn an instrument. Many people just plain don’t want to or don’t care to learn an instrument.
f) They are assuming that they are superior to the people who play the game because they know how to play ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’ on the harpsichord and that everyone cares what they, being far more educated in music, has to say. This is in general entirely false as very few people actually care what a smarty pants with a swelled ego has to say.

My boyfriend has this “socks set up” on his RockBand drum set. Well, actually, HAD this set up, because he’s had the RockBand 2 drum set for almost a year now, which is a LOT more quiet and has more sensitive surface pads. So basically, that’s what the socks were used for on the original drum set. If you Youtube some RockBand songs… you’ll notice this “fix” is a lot more common than you’d think.

This is the best idea ever! The tapping and beating of the drums intersept with the sounds comming from the game. That is the only thing that needed to be fixed, and he perfected it. I think there are too many people who just don’t get it. I don’t rate something that I don’t understand because I think I may be missing the point!!! I skip and move on:)
